That deep sea siphonophore would be longest colonial animal in the world. The title of the longest individual animal in the world goes to the bootlace ribbon worm found off the northwestern European tidal coasts like Norway, Sweden and Great Britain. In 1864 a specimen measuring over 180 feet was found washed ashore after a severe storm in St. Andrews, Scotland!

Maredis Thank you. I appreciate that! It's nice to have a channel out of a handful here on you tube that provides real and factual information on wildlife. I feel like if anyone wanted to get some inspiration for writing some sci-fi alien species, it would be our own ocean.
@maredis9564
@maredis9564 3 года назад
Could not agree more, my friend! Honestly many of our ideas of what aliens are is informed by life in our seas. I know a lot of sci-fi was influenced by the ocean, both in Asiimov's stuff and in Star Wars (Cato Nemoidia, Mon Calomari, and Rhodian designs). I think the part that takes me the most by surprise are cephalopods. Changing colors to camouflage, being able to escape from almost any situation, and having crazy tentacles. That's the most alien thing I can imagine, AND they're intelligent!!
@mito._
@mito._ 3 года назад
There's an alien species that looks similar to a manowar in Mass Effect, called Hanar. They're silent and seem to just float wherever they are, but have a kind of telepathy that let's them communicate with others.

HAHAHAHAH A dooblidoo is just one of my made up words! >D< It does sound a lot like jazz-scattin, and it just kind of reminds me of Steve Irwin. He was my hero growing up, and the reason why I love the ocean so much. I guess maybe I associated dooblidoo with the didgeridoo, and then with Australia, and Steve Irwin. Hey Sam! This was more of a general EMT pain scale from 1-5, cited in two or three studies that I saw. Pretty simple metric, but there's nothing standardized for jellyfish stings. Another commonly cited system is the Schmidt/Starr Sting index, which is 0-4 and was developed for insects. I have heard of it used before on jellies as well. So wait, since each part is an organism, is the jelly head also another organism or is it just what connects them?
@maredis9564
@maredis9564 3 года назад
Yes! So the jelly head part is another organism as well. I found this on a website: "The top zooid, which resembles a blob with the aforementioned mohawk, is the pneumatophore. It's basically a gas-filled bag that allows the man-of-war to float. The next two zooids, gastrozooids and dactylozooids, are the man-of-war's tentacles. The former, as their name implies, are the organism's feeding tentacles. The latter are for defense and capturing prey. The final zooid, gonozooids, deal with reproduction." (www.treehugger.com/portuguese-man-war-facts-4864196) It appears that each part of the creature are all different organisms in this siphonophore. :O Amazing!! And phenomenal question

i got stung by one as kid, definitely the most painful experience ever the painful sting hits instantly like an electric shock. getting stung by dead ones is bad, but a living one is way worse, i got stung in my thigh and left a mark similar to a bruise for a week that same spot hurts to even touch

Just got stung by one of those suckers today. I was watching a bunch of dolphins on a beach in Mexico when one of the man-of-wars washes up behind me and when my brother warned me of it, it was too late. It was easily the most painful experience I’ve ever had. I didn’t know how to treat it and when I went to treat it o still had tentacles on me meaning I was still getting injected. I treated it with vinegar and hot water but I have also heard after applying vinegar you should use a plastic card to scrape of the little needles that have yet to inject you. Let’s just say I pretty much turned into a zombie that was screeching for a whole hour before I passed out in the shower. 0/10 would never try again.

Honolulu, HI...about 8 years old swimming with my sister...I saw what I thought was a part of my sisters bathing suit strap as we were swimming close to each other...Went to pick it up while saying "Patty I found your bath.....screams start bellowing from me, walked out of water onto the beach, the next thing I know I have a blanket on me and a bunch of people looking down at me, then I was whisked away in an ambulance. Said all that to say, don't be grabbing any string-straps out of the ocean it just might sting you until you faint! Perhaps being Portuguese, this Portuguese Man of War had a connection to me as my sister is Japanese....life was not fair that day, LOL!
