That's not to say there is some serious comic relief -- notably the scenes of Valmont getting the key to Cecile's room and nearly getting caught by her mother, as the key falls into a huge urn. . . . . Next morning, the faces he makes at Cecile over the breakfast table which send her running away in tears are sidesplitting for being understated; likewise the grimace he makes passing her and her mother on the stairs.

Everyone was young once. Most people know of Marlon Brando as an ugly old man and have no idea how foxy he was in the 1940's. Clint Eastwood is a geezer but look at him in the 50's. Hell, find a picture of Walter Cronkite from 6 thousand years ago and we'll probably be impressed.

I watched this movie as a 12 year old just for the costumes alone. At that time, I admit the movie was kinda boring. But now as an adult, I adore this movie tremendously and I wished this won the Oscars for Best Picture instead of "Rain Man" and Glenn Close as well. Man, she was deliciously conniving and evil in this one. This movie also taught me a lot about body language and facial expression. They are subtle yet very sophisticated. Only learned people would get those small hints if I were to give off those gestures.

An excellent historical period movie adaptation of a brilliant 18th Century french novel by Choderlos de Laclos.Glenn Close,John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer give outstanding performances. The costumes and jewellery are elegant ,George Fenton's Compositions are fine replications of 18th century baroque music.Frears and Christopher Hampton have captured the essence of Laclos novel with witty dialogues.Close and Malkovich recreate the cunning Marquise and the clever vicomte very good.Pfeifers Limning of the innocent and religious Madame de Tourvel is excellent. She plays very believable a woman torn between guilt and morals. Laclos teaches us the moral rule that if we do evil to others we get punished misfortune happens to us. Laclos had written many works in his life, but I read that only his " Dangerous Liaisons" had literary importance in a german lexica - " Kindlers Literatur Lexikon."

What a damn fantastic movie!. Close, Malkovich and Pfeiffer are perfect in their roles. Pfeiffer is very believable as a lady who the Malkovich character could fall in love with. She's center of the movie. Her destruction leads to that death of Valmont and the humiliation of Close's character. The last lines of the clip are great. what explains that most movies today are crap compared to Dangerous Liasons...immaturity.

" Les Liaisons Dangereuses", œuvre de Choderlos de Laclos. Écrite dans le français le plus pur et élégant, celui du XVIII eme siècle; se transforme en film anglo-saxon, en anglais, sans qu'il ne soit aucunement mention de l'oeuvre matrice. Est-ce cela que l'on appelle " l'appropriation culturelle" dans l'anglosphere ?

The story has been adopted in many different settings, including in Brazil and Korea. It’s just the story is universally and timelessly appealing, not only to the 18th century French people. It’s the same reason why people all around the world read and know the works of Shakespeare, translated and adapted beyond their original 17th century English. I don’t think great stories are particularly French or English, and transcending cultural boundaries is one reason why they are so great.

I think not casting conventionaly handsome actors in the lead roles is right for the period of history. They had different ideas of beauty, all rich men & women were considered attractive. Mainly because they lived in total luxury and didnt have to do any kind of manual work. Poorer people had rough dirty hands, and nails, were more tanned working outside etc their health wasnt as good they had less food & didnt live as long.
