When you sail a fast boat like the Nacra 17 things can go wrong very quickly and after almost a decade of sailing catamarans I can assure you things will go wrong.
Especially when you are learning how to sail the boat in extreme conditions.
Foiling is the edge of the sailing sport. But the edge between a state of flow and a crash is razor sharp.
Most of the time it is very difficult to capture the speed on video but when you see the Nacra crashing into a wave, 30 knots to 0 in two Meters, you really can see the pure awesomeness of sailing.
Well, is it dangerous? Of course it is! It’s not like you are getting hurt every time you capsize, but there is not one single team in the fleet who hadn’t had a big injury.
Especially the foils down the rudders can be a bit nasty. But no sailors where hurt during the making of that video. And while flying around the boat getting some unusual views of the trim and all that stuff, I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
Sailing is great!
