Great Video. I live in Willits, known as the Gateway to the Redwoods if your heading north on US 101 and about an hour from that Redwood tree you tried to drive through Cara, Leggett. I was anticipating your coming this far and glad you and Danielle did. I think the tallest tree in the world is near there too, or maybe further north. It's been a while since I've gone into those State Parks. To the west of Willits, on hwy 20, its redwoods all the way to the ocean, 45 minutes by car. There is so much evidence of some very large Old Growth Redwoods were in Northern Calif once, but many of them had been logged in the 1800's and early 1900's. Luckly these National Parks also saved many of them . Glad you and Danielle ventured down Calif and got to see these beautiful trees. Take care. Dave

OMG, you two ladies were in our backyard. We live in Grants Pass and ride and drive up on those roads all the time. I agree with your review of the spray painted rocks the first time I saw them years ago but those rocks have been painted for years. Good job negotiating those roads and welcome to our Redwoods

One good thing about black bears, which is the prevalent type of bear here, is that they are more afraid of you than you are of them andntry to stay away unless you are near cubs at least, we were just down in the coastal redwoods this last weekend and dispersed camped in the six rivers national forest And if you guys saw my sequoia at the expo you would understand the comments about "trail pinstriping" as mine has a lot of it and even donalds (softroadingthewest) we are surprised that ed shins vinyl hasnt scraped up much on his ram

Love the adventure and your rigs, you girls were in a VERY dangerous area of Oregon. Lots of grows and ambushes down on those roads you were on. The guy who sells that route overland trail guide erases all the comments of people trying to help folks by warning them. That is a very rough area and people frequently get shot at or people come out of the woods and take your stuff. Glad you all were safe 🙏. By the way you were on a Federal Permit only trail

@asaprocky8195 Год назад
At 31:20 you asked for the type of the tree. I believe it's a Manzanita. That tree that was lying down next to your trail, and you said it felt so soft, looked more like a Sequoia than an actual Redwood tree. Redwood trees have very limited growing areas. Northern coastal California is a common area for them. There is a species of Redwood in Chile, South America. They like cool, moist regions. Sequoias have softer and less dense fiber than Redwoods, so they are rarely used in construction projects. Redwood has just enough fiber strength to support it's own weight, so it is not considered a suitable timber for high support loads. Plenty of uses for decking, and exposed trellis work. Douglas Fir is more commonly used for structural construction requirements. Redwood is somewhat fire resistant, and that's why you see those trees that were hit by lightning, and set on fire, self extinguish to come back and grow some more. They are also insect resistant, a good substitute for chemical pressure treated lumber ... but the blond sap wood on the outer surface of the log, will rot. The red heart material, was often used for foundation sill plate material due to it's greater density and resistance to decay. Manzanita trees have a lot of wax in their fiber, so they burn super hot and can explode to spread the fire into other timber stands. Being in a grove of Manzanita trees during a lightning storm, or forest fire area, is quite dangerous. They also tend to shed their limbs that can break easily during high winds, so be careful if you are hiking or camping among them.
@christyrattay5213
@christyrattay5213 Год назад
It’s a madrone tree, very similar to manzanita, but much larger. Manzanita tends to be much smaller, typically more of a large bush size.

I think this is the memorial you guys came across ..... Brookings man dies in off-road accident Print E-mail Written by The Curry Coastal Pilot June 03, 2013 04:33 pm A Brookings man died Saturday when his Jeep plunged down an embankment after he tried to get it back onto a mountain road in Del Norte near the Oregon border. Jason L. Roberts, 31, was driving with his family in his 2013 Jeep Rubicon north on Forest Service Road 112, also known as the McGrew Trail, shortly after 2 p.m. when the Jeep started to slide off the edge of the rock roadway and down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.l. Roberts was able to stop the vehicle and exit with his 29-year-old wife and two children, ages 2 and 4, the CHP said. Roberts re-entered his Jeep in an attempt to get it back onto the road, but it lost traction and rolled almost 400 feet down an embankment ejecting Roberts, who died at the scene, CHP Sgt. Rick Thomas said. Roberts did not appear to be wearing his seat belt, the CHP said.

I wonder how long we will have access to such scenery. With the rise in popularity of off-roading, trails and even public lands all over the country are being closed to vehicle traffic. The culprits are not HOAs, Karens, or nosy seniors. It’s morons that tear up trails, destroy neighboring land off trail, and leave garbage everywhere. I blame RU-vidrs and IG. Social media has brought out the worst in us.
