Burke and Nonis also got Kadri, Riely , Lupul, Gardiner ,JVR, Etc... So technically they still have a ways to go before that era is truly done . Oh ya Nylander was also a Nonis pick !
+David McCalla I honestly don't think Burke did bad. It was his team he put together in 2013. Nonis just got the credit. I mean in 2013 the leafs were tough to play against. They fought, they hit, the had a better penalty kill then previous years, and they just played good. Sure it was a half season, but that was the most exciting year in a long time. Then when Nonis took over he pretty much threw that team away.
Kyle Lacoste I agree they were tough to play against in 2013 but then again it was a lockout season if it was a real season they wouldn't have made it in the playoffs. Burke was okay in his time here but the Kessel trade was really bad and he setback the team. Nonis totally destroyed the team with his stupid signings. I am just glad both of them are gone.
I won't be stupid and say Burke's trade for Kessel was a good one. Seeing how we gave up a few good draft picks. But still isn't as stupid as when we traded Rask for Raycroft.
+George Cole Me 2. I thought it might be on his page tho. Tsn radio guys have said that lupul and Bozak are next in line.. Will be waiting for His Trade Video's if it happens.. Btw Steve, Take it easy on those red Bulls.. LOL!
Don't hate Dion but I was so happy when I saw he got traded. And that we didn't retain!!!! LOL i thought we were stuck with him! Lou and Shanahan are GENIUSES!!!! TANK ON!
heres what most people dont understand. the leafs didnt make this trade for any of the players they acquired. they made this trade to get rid of phaneufs contract. it was going to hinder us going forward. now we likely have room to sign stamkos, if management wants
Kebabscout yeah thats just a cherry on top. getting rid of the contract is much more significant though as it allows a lot more cap flexibility in the future. this makes signing stamkos a real and maybe even logical possibility
288theabe yeah i dont really want him but its hard to ignore the hype, especially after this trade. i dont think he fits in with our rebuild plan. i dont think management is going to rush the rebuild by signing a superstar whos already leaving his prime
+Christopher Camden I don't completely agree but you make a good point. While one of their goals was to rid themselves of Phaneuf's contract, it was also to get the best return for him. If they were only interested in moving him he would have likely been gone awhile go. They finally were offered a deal they could not say no to and pulled the trigger. He would have stuck around longer if the deal wasn't right. This trade breaks down to a top 4 dman in Phaneuf for a 2nd rounder and a promising prospect in Tobias Lindberg. Freeing his cap space was at the top of the list though. Oh and in regards to Stamkos he actually has to make it to free agency because we can even begin to try and sign him :)
While I think Lou made a lot of mistakes in his last few years in NJ, there's still one thing he's never lost his touch at: Trades. Congrats, Leafs fans. This team is heading in the right direction.
1. I LOVE your enthusiasm! 2. I believe this video was 6 years ago, and NONE of those 9 are Ottawa's pride, prestigious players that they hoped for, INCLUDING Phanuef! 3. I think you're incredible, love your videos, don't stop
Also Steve, really liked your take on this. I kinda expected a "Leafs won this trade!" reaction but it was pretty level headed and fair. Can't wait for tonight's SDP!
It's amazing when you watch a video like this now and realize just HOW much of a turnaround our roster went through. Hearing names like Shawn Matthias, Brad Boyes, P.A. Parenteau, not to mention Cowen, Michalek and Greening, the latter two being with the Marlies the entire time, save for a few Leaf games... and that's not mentioning the others, like Grabner, Bernier, et cetera. It's shocking.
1. Only two players involved in this trade remain with their respective organizations. A) Emeli Rasanen (the 2017 2nd round pick) and B) Colin Greening. With the Marlies signed to an AHL contract 2. Of the 10 players involved only Phaneuf and Tobias Lindberg (6 NHL GP) played any NHL games 3. Phaneuf has 1 point in 17 games to start this season. His first point coming in the 17th game against the Leafs (of course) A little surprising. IMO the Leafs win this trade eaisly with 5.25 million cap saved and Emeli Rasanen
+OneTimer No way, Bozak is a character guy, great faceoff taker, decent point producer. No way you buy him out, if the trade makes sense he isn't untouchable, move him, but don't actively try to move him.
OneTimer sure but just because he is 30 doesn't mean you buy him out. If you want to get full value out of him then you trade him sooner rather than later, but he is more valuable on this team. Veteran, character guy who will teach the young kids how to act in the NHL on the ice, in the dressing room, and with the media. Bozak does all of that well. You don't want the Leafs to ship out every vet, or else there will be no one to set an example for the kids, we'd turn out like the Oilers.
Loved it, all of these 'insiders' that they like to call themselves had not a single clue this was going to happen! That's another reason to love that move!
leafs will still lose most of their games. I've been watching the leafs lose since 1994-95, it's become a ritual I suppose. Although congrats on getting rid of phaneuf.
In addition to EK being the second highest paid defenseman on the sens, probably worth noting that Nathan Horton is currently the highest paid player on the leafs.
As a huge Oshawa Generals fan, Im fired up Tobias Lindberg is reuniting with DJ Smith. DJ really got the best out of Lindberg last year. Can bet DJ was huge in them adding Lindberg to this trade
Grosso FTW his game is 100% built on speed. He was by far the fastest player on the Gens memorial cup winning team last year. DJ Smith (now Leafs assistant coach) got him playing so much more physical though than when he originally came to Oshawa
We The North Dude thats awesome. At worst he's a big sweedish truck that keeps Nylander safe, and produces for the Marlies, at best he could turn out to be a contributor on the Leafs. Love it.
Grosso FTW he's not the "goon" type that would be put on the ice to protect someone. But I guarantee you he will be able to keep up with Nylander when not many other players could
That’s how I FELT NOW with the Sens dumping everyone but it’d part of a rebuild first time I ever experienced a rebuild part of it is Tearing it apart and being bad for years to be a contender
Haha and Nylander did end up getting called up to the Leafs at the end of that season as did Kapanen. Since the Leafs sucked, they decided to give the kids a chance and the Marlies were stacked, large in part thanks to that trade, and won the Calder Cup two seasons later
+P Carnochan That is why this trade was made. Jared Cowen's contract is worth more dead than alive, and Greening can also be bought out at a 2/3ds rate or be buried with the Marlies.
Leafs got way worse without Phaneuf, but getting rid of his contract and getting value from it in Lindberg and a 2nd round pick is amazing for the Leafs going forward.
never going to happen but whats funny is, if the Sens bump the Pens out of the playoffs. That means the Leafs helped themselves lose the first round draft pick from the Kessel trade. Great trade for both teams
As a die hard sens fan, this is an epic win for Ottawa. Internal team salary cap, small market, and an emerging Hoffman who Ottawa STOLE in arbitration for 2 mil, there were three guys who needed to go: Greening @ 2.65 Mil/yr who is an ahl player who had one flash in pan year, Michalek @ 4 Mil/yr whose always injured and a bottom six guy, and Jerry, oh Jerry, never has a guy looked so lost and confused in a pro sports game (@ 3.1 mil/yr). Now we can re-sign Hoffman, and what remains is basically a 2nd and potential top 6 guy for a reasonable top-4 D with experience, and then those other guys, who I'll agree, are most likely going to be irrelevant. I was worried about the sens being able to get rid of those guys, I didn't think anyone would take them, the fact they moved them all in one deal is magical.
+Axel Kanyandekwe I want Rielly as captain, wouldn't mind Komarov as captain just for a bit (maybe two years) if management decides they want to keep him.
+Jerome Samuel The thing is, the Leafs have money. We're willing to pay Nathan Horton millions of dollars not to play for our team. We can afford to bite the bullet with your crap players. Sens on the other hand have very little money and have to deal with Dion's contract for the next 5 years. Have fun :)
Clearly, the Leafs need more than hockey talent to get into the playoff. Perhaps they need a complete trade of their suits and leave the players alone.
I am hoping Colin greening will at least get a chance with the leafs, I have a (sort of) connect with Colin, and I would love to see him play for the leafs
+smashvillenashville Cowen's ability means nothing to this trade.... Its that they were stuck with Phaneufs long deal for 6 years and now everyone they're getting will be off their books after next year
+smashvillenashville Cowen isn't in the Leafs' long-term plans. He's useful for a buyout. Phaneuf for Cowen is a huge upgrade for the Sens, while the Leafs get buyout candidates.
+smashvillenashville I don't know about that. Babcock managed to turn the Pilon into someone somewhat effective, so who knows what he could do for Cowen.
I disagree on the Nylander angle. Yeah, let's prevent him from playing on a terrible NHL roster. So umm...you planning on keeping him down there for the next 5 years? Because, hate to break the news, but the Leafs will suck next year too. He's not going to miss anything playing a handful of games on the Leafs and then going right back to the Marlies for a playoff run. He's not going to forget he has that to do while he's up with the Leafs.
