Meryl Streep presenting Daniel Day-Lewis the Oscar® for Best Actor for his performance in "Lincoln" at the 2013 Oscars®. For more Oscars videos visit www.oscar.com
Daniel Day-Lewis has only done 11 feature-length films as a lead actor in his entire career, and has been nominated in the Best Actor category for 6 of them, with 3 wins. This man is truly incredible.
@@avantshiv He has had enough, he deserves his retirement just like Jack Nicholson and Joe Pesci. He has nothing more to prove to anybody for his talent so he just does stuff that brings him joy which is be closer to his family and i fully respect him. He left a legacy that will live on forever
@TonyDracon Right? Anyone could lie and people would believe it. Unless it's a joke. Either way, a joke is a form of lying used in an entertaining way? Maybe?
@@thehumblepotatoreborn9313 He sounds very sincere, but then again he is in fact a 3 time Oscar winner - maybe he's truly mastered the act of faking sincerity. But I think not. Everyone likes him, that should be a good sign.
He should have won for that too. What a gracefully savage note to retire on, but I hope PTA gets him to do one more role with him. They bring out the best in each other.
@@JM-fs3cg look at his work compared to everyone else’s he’s a different human being in each film, My Left Foot alone should solidify his being the greatest actor in mankind that there ever was or will be
Hes been nominated for 6 Oscars and won 3, which is only a success rate of 50%. A more accurate example would be Mahershala Ali, Hilary Swank, or Cristoph Waltz.
@@caseyaulbach7693 other guys do a lot of movies dude, DDL on the other hand did few movies only. Not taking any credit from Mahershala ali or anyone, DDL winning it for the best actor, not supporting actor.
Not sure when anyone will read this, but it is February 2023. I was walking through Washington Square Park, here in New York City, and there, sitting alone, reading a book, looking as normal as could be, was none other than Daniel Day-Lewis. Absolutely incredible to walk by him and see him just blending in looking like a normal guy in the park. This legend. I am rarely shocked at seeing celebrities in person. But seeing Daniel Day-Lewis, sitting on a park bench, reading a book… That’s a moment I won’t forget.
What a blessing of a moment in time. While I was reading your comment another epic actor came to mind that could actually pull off the same blending in, and that would be Sean Connery. Quiet, humble, dignified and respectful. Thank you for sharing the moment you could never forget. If I could only have been there......♡ Susan, May 2023
Uhhh, sorry to rain on your parade but that was his doppelganger Eugene Schlarff. He's unhoused and pretends to read on that bench everyday. If you look closely he's usually holding the book upside-down and muttering to himself.
Meryl, quite rightly, understood she had said enough with her opening speech for Best Actor. Like all the Greats, she knows what to leave in, and what to leave out.
Daniel Day-Lewis is the ONLY Oscar recipient who can talk as long as he wants and they will NEVER turn the music on him. You don't disrespect the World's greatest actor.
Every Best Actor Oscar acceptance speech till the end of time should start with the sentence “I’d like to thank Daniel Day Lewis for not making a film this year”
Best Actress to should start saying "I'd like to thank Meryl Streep for being my acting hero......and for not making a film this year" 😂😂 you have to admit that Meryl and DDL influenced many young actors working today
I think she did - she wouldn't have taken that risk! Her glasses weren't on when she came out, but they were by the time the camera got back to her when she'd announced all the nominees, so that suggests she looked in the envelope whilst the camera was on the nominees. Imagine if it hadn't been Daniel Day Lewis's name in that envelope and she announced him as the winner! All hell would've broken loose lol (as we saw a few years later....)
@@connorw2k I can't imagine she would have taken that risk though! Yes, it was fully expected it would go to Daniel Day Lewis, but there is always going to be that small chance that someone else's name is in the envelope and it would just be too risky not to make absolutely sure! The alternative of course is that she'd already opened the envelope before coming out on stage and so knew whose name was in there, but if that were the case, why put her glasses on after announcing all the nominees? We don't see her at all when she is announcing all the nominees, so she had a good amount of time to put her glasses on and look then, but who knows eh? :)
shouldn’t have been too obvious considering Joaquin Phoenix gave an overall better performance but his character was more edgy and not a prominent figure like Lincoln so the academy didn’t give him the award.
While Daniel Day-Lewis has retired from acting, he has left a legacy of brilliant characters, including oil tycoon 'Daniel Plainview,' a guy with cerebral palsy 'Christy Brown,' a Mohican warrior 'Hawkeye,' a street gangster 'Bill the Butcher,' and 'Abraham Lincoln.' Now that's what I call range... one of the greatest actors in cinematic history.
@@hamzamizo7663 I think we could say DDL has reached Marlon Brando's level. I don't like comparing Brando and Day Lewis both are terrific actors in a similar level
Well, she went 29 years between her second and third (and to date last) Oscar. I've never understood the notion that she "keeps winning." DDL won three in 23 years, so, he "keeps winning," insofar as it really matters if the performances are good. :-)
Well, DDL only "lost" twice, MS 17 times so far. What a big loser she is! p.s.: Probably just my command of English or the lack of it, but "lost" sounds as if this was a competition? It's an award.
The 2013 Oscars definitely had one of the best lineup of nominees for every category. I mean Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Denzel... not a lineup we would see nowdays
I just saw The Master and I have to say that if he was not competing against Daniel Day-Lewis then the Oscar was his. Phoenix is simply amazing in the movie. He becomes Freddie within first 5 minutes of the movie. Please do watch it if you haven't.
Alfonso Parrado There's been only one comment about an actor's performance in a film here, so it really isn't all that difficult to understand what Eli is talking about.
That is the template for an Oscar speech right there! No politics, no over the top antics. Just gratitude, grace, and class! Mr. Lewis is a treasure and his performance as Lincoln was epic. My favorite of his is still Last of the Mohicans, but he was very deserving for his role as Lincoln!
Daniel Day Lewis is a unique and rare talent. Not only does he almost physically embody his characters, but he makes you believe he is that person. There are many incredible actors out there, Hanks, De Niro, Pitt, DiCaprio, Freeman...but none of them have ever mesmerised me so much on screen, that you think he's not acting. Look at just a small section of hi incredible versatility. The Bounty Sunday Bloody Sunday My Left Foot A Room With A View In The Name of The Father Last Of The Mohicans Age Of Innocence The Crucible Gangs Of New York Nine There Will Be Blood Lincoln ....brilliant, just brilliant 💜
Daniel's representation of Christy Brown could be sitting right next to his Lincoln and you would never know they weren't two completely separate people. You can say that about all of the mesmerizing characters he has portrayed.
DANIEL DAY LEWIS, A BRITISH, PLAYED AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT AND WON HIS 3RD OSCAR FOR THE ROLE. MERYL STREEP, AN AMERICAN. PLAYED A BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, AND WON HER 3RD OSCAR FOR THE ROLE....what are the odds!
Mousita Mousita It’s the United Kingdom of Great Britain and *Northern* Ireland. The north of the island is part of the UK but the rest - the Republic of Ireland (which is what people usually refer to when they say ‘Ireland’) - is an independent nation.
DDL is the real deal. I had the honor of meeting him on the streets of New York and he was just as warm and congenial to me as he appears here. A true gentleman blessed with immense talent.
Both Foster and Mirren presented this year. Foster co-presented Best Actress (along with Jennifer Lawrence) to Frances McDormand for THREE BILLBOARDS, while Mirren co-presented with Jane Fonda the Best Actor award to Gary Oldman (Day-Lewis was nominated for PHANTOM THREAD this year).
@@kysike666 I agree with your general sentiment on the dangers of seeing celebrities as more than human, but I expect it's easy to lose sight of things when your job is to emotionally move millions of people and you're recognized everywhere you go
@@techno4ugeeks14 Joaquin wasn't bitter. The reason he looks so uncomfortable here is because he's a deeply private and humble person who doesn't sit easily with the Hollywood culture of attention and praise. He's a brilliant actor, but he's not so great with the baggage that comes with the industry, and he's always had a strained relationship with the media because of how they treated his brother's death. They publicised the 911 call Joaquin made in the final minutes of River's life. Imagine being forced to relive your brother's death again and again and reminded of your inability to save him. He has good reason to appear distant and detached.
@@ohwellwhateverr Yes he was. His exact phrase was "bitter Joaquin that didn't want to be there", not just "~bitter~" and he was right. Joaquin didn't want to be there and he was bitter he had to go because of his disdain for awards. Why you randomly decided to write an entire wall about River Phoenix's death, I have no idea.
@@victorkong82 yeah that was ages ago...and he was a like 19? At the time....I doubt that phone call is what is affecting him TODAY... He's an introvert and he doesn't like public appearances. He's a private person...there's pretty much NOTHING more to it. That's his personality. End of story. In fact, I believe all of the phoenixes are that way.
He's acted amazingly in a couple of dozen movies, just fewer the last couple of decades. And he's not just a film actor. He was amazing across the board. The 3 roles he won best actor Oscar for isn't all of them... in fact In the Name of the Father and Gangs of New York where he was only nominated are my favourites. Last of the Mohicans, My Beautiful Laundrette, Age of Innocence and the Unbearable Likeness of Being are all up there as performances go. Even bit roles like in Gandhi were impressive. This ranges over so many character types, ages, at least 5 nationalities...
Joaquin really crushed it that year, a truly masterful performance, arguibly on the same league or even better than his Joker Performance. Sadly his rival was Sir DD Lewis.
@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn lol joker is nowhere near his best performance New Joaquin fans only like Joaquin from joker. They don’t know the wealth of great performances he’s given across his entire career. The master, you were never really here, walk the line, her, and of course, gladiator. These are all better than joker, even though joker was a great performance. He’s one of the most versatile actors, period. Plus he deserved the Oscar more than DDL for that year’s Academy Awards.
@@noclue5345 Lol this, lol that, how about you just stop acting like you’re opinion is fact? I’ve watched many of his films and Joker was by far more favourite of his. His best performance by far in my eyes, one that will live forever.
You see this guy and you think: “This can’t be Daniel Plainview”. Thats how good Daniel Day Lewis is. He completely immerses himself in his roles. A legend
I would also point out the great makeup effects in Lincoln. While Daniel Day Lewis, at the time of filming, was actually about Lincoln's age during the time the film takes place, in photos of Lincoln you can see the presidency has aged him considerably. And I think they did a really solid job capturing that with the makeup. Look at a picture of Lewis in the movie and then a picture of him in real life and tell me you don't see a noticeable difference.
No kidding! I got lost, forgot it wasn't really Lincoln. Which is more odd that I never met, heard or actually seen him in person obviously. I can't explain it
Brilliant. Such a beautiful, soothing voice and accent he has. And what charm. And what an actor:) Wish he hadn't retired, at least as I can't believe there won't be any chance to see him and Meryl Streep in a movie together.
The Academy should change the name of the category from now on, in the future, it should be like this: "And now, in the Daniel Day-Lewis category, the nominees are..."
ryantres85 ..if category was DDL award..no actor would win, thats why its called the oscars. To give actors a chance..the real ddl is on another level!
Not only that, but his speeches are never cobbled together from scraps of papers tumbling out of his pockets, thanking a hundred people including his lawyer, waving at the teleprompter and begging for more time.
That's one of the reasons he is such a perfect actor. He speaks more eloquently than anyone on that stage and can improvise better than anyone on a film set
Critics have praised Christian Bale too for his mind blowing performance in Ford V Ferrari. This year it's gonna be really tough. Joaquin Phoenix, Bale, Tom Hanks, William Dafoe. The fifth nominee.......... I don't know who is gonna be there. Maybe Leo or Brad for Once upon a time in Hollywood.
Not only is Daniel Day-Lewis genuinely the greatest actor of all time, he's also one of the most humble people too. A real family man, loves his wife, doesn't, and never has got involved in the 'celebrity' culture, and just gets on with his work always delivering incredible performance after incredible performance. A true gentleman. Gotta respect that.
This guy is on a league of his own. There are actors and then there is Daniel Day-Lewis. Nobody comes even close, male or female. This guy becomes the character he is playing. For him, it becomes a matter of life and death. There are no hiccups in his performances. It's just amazing to say the least.
Joaquin Phoenix comes close, though he has only started being given really good material since his comeback. He has shown more versatility than Daniel Day Lewis
And I I don't know. Don't take me wrong; I think Joaquin is a great actor. He is one of the best, however, we are speaking about roles where you have to act like already known characters. Daniel Lewis is good at that. You know who else I think is awesome actor? Bryan Cranston.
Jorge Ortiz I mean, his portrayal of Johnny Cash is one of the most dedicated and accurate in acting history (even going as far as singing just like him) . It's just that he almost never closes those kind of roles.
