My mother has a colloquialism for this type of fellow, "He could fall into a bucket of s**t and come out smelling like a rose". This also reminds me of the new legal defence, affluenza, being too rich to know right from wrong.

I have come to really love your channel, and as a history guy and Civil War reenactor myself, I also like your saying; "History, that deserves to be remembered". I wonder if you might look into another Civil War Subject, Col. Daniel Bidwell, commander of the 49th NYVI, and sometimes commander of the VIth Corps of the Army of the Potomac. He was the only General to be given a battlefield commission to general by President Lincoln himself after the VIth Corps actions at the battle of Ft. Stevens. He would die at the battle of Ceder Creek before Congress could act to confirm in, but as you say it is history that deserves to be remembered.

@@V.Hansen. I see, you will only be satisfied with a 100% kill rate. As long as one guy keeps his career it is perfectly reasonable. It is harder to ruin the career of someone very hard to replace. It's all a matter of money. 90% of the people don't actually believe that these things should happen, but in a public situation they will support what they think people think is moral, or they will just support what is expedient for themselves. If someone says "no", a small percentage will shriek and try to ruin that person, but there are certain people that are harder to ruin than others. Sports owners 1) cannot replace their top players easily and 2) make their sales to a more resistant demographic that isn't as far gone as many other segments of the society. But although top athletes won't get their careers destroyed as easily, they will get fined and suspended simply for facing an accusation.

This is one of the most interesting stories in all American history. Read the excellent biography of Sickles, “American Scoundrel”. You could do a whole series on Dan. To me the most ironic part of this tale is how his widow became seen to be the villain of the piece when she took Sickles back after he shot her lover. Also of interest are the financial shenanigans during his fundraising efforts for construction of the many monuments at Gettysburg. In his favor, this work to create the memorialization of the events of that battle, and the Civil War in general, endure to this day. His fame/infamy was instrumental in supporting those fundraising efforts. It it any surprise that some of those funds appear to have found their way into Dan Sickles pockets?
