The Impeachment and expulsion of Senator William Blount is little remembered today, but it represents an important legal watershed, and caused a literal brawl on the floor of congress. It was perhaps the greatest scandal in the history of America’s upper house.

After growing up in Blountville, TN, then living for 30 years in Blount County, TN I learned more about William Blount in the last 15 minutes than in the last 68 years.

Had you gone to the high school named for him in Blount County, you probably would have picked up most of it. Our civics/US government teacher was pretty well versed in it and found it interesting that he had a school named for him so long after his time period.

@@possumverde Being in a county named for him not as surprising a high school was named for him as the elementary school next door is named for his wife. Back in the 60's Tennessee history was taught in Jr High and getting into the negatives of famous Tennesseans was not a thing. The Blount countian that was more focused on in those days was Sam Houston. Blount County is a great place to live and is rich in history.

Blount's home in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first frame house built west of the Appalachians still stands and is a museum. It is an excellent example of a "civilized" house that once was surrounded by log dwellings. Definitely worth a visit.

Isn't it 'special' how history is re-written without regard to factual evidence? Pretty soon we'll all be referring to slavery as 'on the job training' and ratting out our neighbors for exercising their freedom that doesn't effect us in any way except that we can speak up and send them to jail. Very true. I am a Blount County resident and former Tennessee History teacher. This incident is never mentioned, even in the local paper's weekly History column. It is a shame that more is not known about him outside academic circles he really is revered as a great Tennessean. My oldest daughter teaches Freshman English at William Blount High School. There is also a Mary Blount Elementary School.

It would be very educational and interesting if you could explore and present the polarity shift between Republicans and Democrats in the mid to late 80s. 40 years ago doesn't seem like that long, but back then the South had been the Bastion of the yellow dog Democrats since the conclusion of the war between the states and the invasion of the carpet baggers. The Republicans are the party of lincoln, the party of the yankees, and nowadays they are the party of the south. Food for thought

I believe you need to go back to LBJ and the Civil Rights legislation. LBJ has been quoted as saying while signing the legislation that the South will turn Republican. Which led to Nixons' "Southern Strategy".

It's more on the shift of voters than the party. Most of the Slave owning plantation lost money after the civil war. Most sold their farms and moved north to start their new business with the money they had. Most black used to be in the south too but a majority moved into the north. Majority of those in the southern farms are taken by people from the North to escape the collapse of the car industry and also the 60's hippies trying agriculture. Do you think people like President Eisenhower who broke the school segregation in the south, Walt Disney, John Wayne, former NRA head Charlton Heston who marched with fellow Republican Martin Luther King jr. for equality in the 60's would turn Democrat today? Even JFK's rather Conservative administration would be called Right-wing in todays standard.

@@HM2SGT- The problem is Government oversight and regulations actually protects the top corporations against competitors who are trying to get into the business. It's very anti entrepreneurship and un-capitalist which is equal to undemocratic. That's why big corporation like Boeing or Apple are fully protected from any competitive threats since they can take whatever penalties or even given incentives by the Government that props them up over any upcoming start-up company.

Agreed. Our Government is so shockingly corrupt that believing there is even one legitimate public servant in the house or senate is difficult. If they don't go along with the corruption the others destroy them, if they go along they get millions. All the incentive for a Federal politician is to be corrupt and not put the people first.

Neither a senator nor representative is a civil officer, Likewise neither is the president nor vice president. For this reason alone Section 3 of the 14th Amendment cannot be used against either as it precludes insurrectionists from holding civil office. All of the aforementioned are constitutional officers as they are elected.

Article IV, Section 4, of the Constitution obligates the United States to guarantee a republican form of government for the States. 1787 is well before 1854. What was established in 1854 was a political organization to advance the republican ideology through the anti-Constitutional, democratic elections.

In those times, it was quite normal and expected that government officials would use their office to enrich themselves at the expense of the people. this had been the practice in England and the English colonies for centuries, so Blount undoubtedly felt that he was doing nothing particularly unusual of immoral.

Obviously being Aussie I can’t vote in your elections but if I could I’d be voting for Trump. Like anywhere in the Western world these days even here in Australia the calibre of politicians is so bad you’re voting for the lesser of two evils. Trump’s obviously not squeaky clean but what politician or bureaucrat is? For me there’s nothing funnier than watching lefties and the woke having a massive dummy spit and meltdown like what happened the last time he was elected 😂🤣😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 TRUMP in ‘24.

Ummm, there's only so much that can be presented in grades 6-12. I got an idea. YOU write a history book starting around I don't know 1600 and write the history of the United States so that it can be taught in a 1 hr. class during a school year.

...and today we struggle to put down an ongoing insurrection, which should not be difficult to do. The necessary laws/policies/procedures/tools to protect these United States of America were already firmly in place, but have yet to be used effectively. I fear that the end of our republic may be relegated to history which deserves to be remembered. 😔

Incredibly, our supposedly most learned minds struggle to define, or perhaps even attempt to muddle and obfuscate, the meaning of *insurrection* as written in the Constitution. This might be a case where we should apply the Supreme Court's standard that was once applied to pornography: " I can't define it but I know it when I see it". I fail to understand how any supposedly legally trained mind could look at the events of January 6th and not see an insurrection.

The existential threat currently faced by the United States of America (the Trump insurrection) is even worse than the Blount scandal, and I am deeply concerned for our future.
