Part one (of two) of our exclusive, in-person interview with the filmmakers of this mind-blowing new film, now playing in cinemas.
We are joined by the directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (known collectively as "Daniels"), as well as the film's sound designer and sound effects editor, Andrew Twite, and the re-recording mixer and sound supervisor, Brent Kiser.
If you haven't seen "Everything Everywhere All at Once" yet, it is an incredible example of genre-bending experimentation taken to the absolute extreme. And the directors worked closely with the sound team, in order to craft one of the biggest independent action films in recent memory.
"We knew we wanted to create something that somehow bridged the gap between big blockbuster action films and really intimate risk-taking indie films. And we wanted to find a way to do both at the same time. To carve out space for independent films in theaters, because that's something that's slowly being carved out more for these big, big IP blockbuster films. And we wanted to create a family drama that could basically stand up against those films. So we knew we wanted to make it really entertaining, but also we wanted to give ourselves a challenge of creating a multiverse film - that actually stared at infinity and actually went all the way to its logical, terrifying conclusion - and yet still pulled you back from the brink of meaninglessness and gave you a warm hug by the end."
- Daniel Kwan, co-director, co-writer, and co-producer, "Everything Everywhere All at Once"
To see just how the filmmakers pulled off that incredible challenge, be sure to check out "Everything Everywhere All at Once" at a cinema near you, now playing in Dolby Atmos®, where available.

This movie made me love movies again. Seeing the joy and fun at this table made me so happy to love this movie even more. I'm seeing it a third time next week and I can't wait to watch for some of these little jokes and rythmic beats

I like the conversation at around 22:00, then two minutes in or so: "making it lamer" to recontextualize what is happening. It's a great insight, I can recall so many movies that always go full throttle with the sound design - but there should be dynamics regardless. "Make it quieter at some points" works great for music composition and everything else, so yeah, not overdoing it and having every hit and sound be bombastic should be some great advice for most of us. Dynamic range, but for foley. Really cool talk.

The Daniels are so cool. And hilarious. I really like the part where they address the audience's questions during the premiere Q & A. They fully embrace all of the topics this movie touches on and it shows that they really care about giving the audience a meaningful experience. During and after the film. I saw the movie a couple days ago and every interview or BTS video I see makes me appreciate what they did even more. I'm thinkin I have to go see it again.

In my opinion, it was the film score that drove all seven Oscar wins for Everything Everywhere All At Once......and yet the film score did not win an Oscar. I'm a musician/composer and I must say the soundtrack for EEAAO was one of the most innovative and dramatically perfect film scores I had heard in a long time. Made Hans Zimmer's stuff sound like he was phoning it in.

Agreed. I haven't seen AQOTWF so I can't intelligently compare it, but I enjoyed the score so much that I found it on Spotify to listen as-is. I can't remember the last time I did that.

15:00 You can look up them talking about this scene in a Vanity Fair video. The result is actually quite amazing, since Evelyn is still very disconnected, confused and lost in this part of story. The performances don't exist in the same place, so did the real story where the character is experiencing.

I love this but there is clearly a good bit of Foley as well. Do you have any discussions with the Foley Artist about that? Really good point about synching to the musical beat rather than the action of the character. That is very typical in Foley when you have to perform footsteps or tap noises for dance routines - just follow the beat of the music and the character will seem like they are in synch even when they aren't.

I feel like my theatrical experience with this film wasn’t as good as it could’ve been. There was only like 10 people spread across the theatre and there was only audible reactions to a couple of moments. I watched it in a theatre in a small town on my own when I wanted to see it in one in a city with friends but my friends all live vaguely far away so it’s rare that we can get together. I really wish I was able to experience this film in a much better way but I don’t really have the money to do so.
