Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as DANIELS, have been writing and directing together for over a decade, initially with a slew of viral music videos, commercials, and short films, then with feature films and TV directing.
They've developed a reputation for combining absurdity with heartfelt personal stories. Oftentimes they incorporate a unique brand of visual effects, and visceral practical effects into their genre blending projects.
They have directed music videos for Manchester Orchestra, Foster the People, and won a VMA for their video for “Turn Down For What,” which Scheinert bullied Kwan into being the lead actor in. Kwan is a really good dancer.
They wrote and directed the feature film Swiss Army Man starring Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe, which went on to win the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival, received multiple nominations, and gained a large cult following.
While they were writing & developing their new movie Everything Everywhere All At Once, a kung fu sci-fi dramedy starring Michelle Yeoh, Scheinert went and directed a small redneck dramedy called The Death of Dick Long, also released by A24.
When an interdimensional rupture threatens to unravel reality, the fate of the world is suddenly in the hands of a most unlikely hero: Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh), an overwhelmed immigrant mother. As bizarre and bewildering dangers emerge from the many possible universes, she must learn to channel her newfound powers and fight to save her home, her family, and herself, in this big-hearted and hilarious adventure through the multiverse.
They both live in Los Angeles. One of them has a son. The other has a goofy dog. But to be honest Daniel does most of the work.

This is probably one of the best interviews I've ran across with the Daniels. So much passion about filmmaking being discussed, by both these surprisingly down-to-earth directors as well as the interviewer. If you're the one who did this video, excellent job! 👍

Well said. Incredible that it was Daniel Kwan's mom and a fortune teller who predicted his future though he started off in business school instead of his destiny of film school and story-telling

In essence this movie is a great example of why cinema should exist.. the intertwining of scifi and tangible emotion, the sheer experiential chaos of the visuals makes it one of the most engaging expressions in the medium of film in recent memory.

Just started this. "Swiss Army Man" one of the greatest films ever. Always try to show it to people. The opening credit sequence always stuns the hell out of people. From that point you're either in or out 😂

I didn’t get Swiss Army Man. It might have lost me early on and I just gave up on it. With your recommendation I will rewatch and give it another chance.

Finally! I have watched like EVERY reaction to this movie but you are the only one who saw thru the awesome ridiculousness of the hot dog universe to the heart of it. Honestly think if she hadn't experienced that universe, everything would have ended badly for Evelyn. Finds herself in a relationship with a woman she fears and dislikes in a surreal situation. Learning to love ans accept it is what helped her to kearn and accept everything else. In my opinion. Also i loved the couple of scenes with Scheinert, great acting and in my opinion, adorably hot. Also, shout out to a couple of side characters. Becky was done so well. I fell in love with the character from the way she asked 'what did he say?' after gong gong said girlfriend. So sweet! Also the one security guard, damn good acting. I laugh out loud everytime i hear 'Oh on, Craig! F*ck!'

You talked about during the interview how hard it must have been to get funding for their wacky concepts. Can someone go over about what percentage of that budget would go to the cast & crew? Since they have a couple of veteran actors in Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis, would that increase the payroll quite a bit? And would the directors earn royalties as well as the actors? Thanks.
@NiGeRiAnGeEk
@NiGeRiAnGeEk 2 года назад
There are different ways in which actors are compensated for a film. It all depends on what they negotiate. They can get paid upfront and/or get a percentage of the money the movie makes. The salaries of the actors usually is figured out before the budget is finalized although they usuallyhaveaballpark number when negotions begin. But that's not a hard and fast rule. It depends on the movie, the studio, investors, etc.

Okay I don't get it. On one hand we have movies that don't make 10K in the indie world off 100k but then you get a 4 million dollar movie and make 5.8 millon. So why is there no 100K movies making 5 million? Hmm....how?
