He was my grandfather's best friend, he was a kind, respected man with a great sense of humor, I may have never got the chance to meet him, but I knew I would appreciate him, if I could meet him... My Grandfather's last words, were "I will be with Danny Again", please respect his talent, and don't hate...

NO DOUBT!!! I love EVERY thang I've seen him in!!! The BEST Musicians are NEVER lauded by the Public... I was a BIG HENDRIX fan when I was coming up but MAN ... People like Bill, Danny, Red , Albert Lee,The Whole "Wrecking Crew" and "Muscle Shoals" guys made R&B and Country, and POP!!! What about Mickey Raphael with Willie??? How many albums has Mickey "MADE"... as in if he wasn't on it, it would be SO LESS!!! And BOB has the TIME of his LIFE everytime he's on stage... Like Marty Stewarts Cousin... People like 'Li'L Wayne anbd his "throes" will NEVER understand!!!

I was gifted a trip to Austin by my late uncle and he took me to see the filming of Austin City Limits. I was disappointed at first because I was hoping someone I’d heard of was taping a show. That soon changed the second Danny started playing and I’ve never been the same since. I got home and bought every single tape, CD, and record of his I could get my hands on and I’ve been a lifelong fan ever since.

The similarities between Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan are eerie. Both possessed fearsome talent. Both lived in the Washington DC area. Both were known for playing Telecasters (in fact they both owned the same Tele at different times). Both had eclectic styles and could play virtually any style of music. Both were fiercely independent. Neither, despite being massively gifted musicians, ever gained widespread fame. And both died -- at their own hands -- just shy of 50. Depression is a monster that robs us all, either personally or by taking some of the best among us.

Danny was a DC legend as was Roy. I played drums on Roy's final California tour in the Spring of the year he died, 1988. However, I used to see Danny on Tuesday nights at the Childe Harold at DuPont Circle with Emmy Lou Harris and with his own band Danny & the Fat Boys. They were always great and I will always have fond memories experiencing both of them in such intimate situations. They were all about the music....and the beer.

He wouldn't fly on airplanes so his sphere of influence was primarily around DC, Maryland and Virginia areas. He may have been the best guitarist in history. Players as good as Danny Gatton are often over-looked by fans in favor of leaner, sexier rock stars. Gatton was a guitar wizard. Far more imaginative, creative and advanced than most 'guitar stars'. Danny is in very rare air as one of the most exceptional guitarists to come along in the past 75 years. And, what a great sax/trumpet/keyboard player Bill Holloman is!!!

That sax isn't "filthy", it's oxidized. Most pro players have their brass instruments acid-dipped regularly to remove the oxidation, and restore the bright finish. However, some purists, especially those with vintage instruments, refuse to have them dipped because some of the metal is removed in the process, potentially altering the tone. My late brother-in-law, Al Seibert, was a pro tenor sax player from the Washington DC area. He played a horn that at the time he passed, was about 75 years old. He absolutely refused to have it dipped, and I'd have to say it was the richest-sounding tenor sax I've ever heard. I'd venture to say Bill feels the same way about his horn.

He comes up to me and states proudly that his Tele and 410 was louder than my Marshall.I didn't argue. He may have been right with a Tele on the treble pickup full volume.

There is a sect of guitar players who favor a black guard tele and fender bf/sf amp, namely the deluxe reverb. They play the same type of music and have contributed to the evolution of the guitar world. Danny is a prime example; I love this sect and have patterned my self after it. I have a pair of 71 Fenders, a deluxe reverb and a thinline tele. The tele has a joe bardon in the neck and a custom broadcaster in the bridge with a hollow mahogany body ,the amp has rca tubes and a texas texas heat speaker, the reverb and tremolo work on both channels. This rig with a small pedal board of 6 pedals can do anything. I am a fan of Danny and others like him.

I'm not entirely sure we would be able to tell what he would have become. Once you reach his level, I'm not sure he or anyone could have been any better. If you consider how long the guitar has been around and nobody has come to within the same zip code... and to do it with 2 lessons and no practice in his lifetime, nor the ability to read music, you be the judge. And just think of the amazing musicians that he played with. We lost Buddy Emmons, the best ever at his craft.

As long as I live, I will never forget hearing Danny Gatton's playing for the first time. I was in graduate school in Illinois and had just gotten the "Guitar Player" magazine issue featuring the greatest 'unknown guitarists," and Danny was on the cover and on their 'sound page' recording inside. "Nit Pickin'" was the tune, one of Danny's showcase numbers, and it just blew me away. Later saw DG several times live, and regard those shows are highlights of my musical life. Especially because of how soon he would be gone. This video, just wow - the guy cooly downs a beer and while the bottle is still dripping suds, plays the heck out of it on his Tele on a slide guitar number. What an amazing talent, but just as important - what a total goof! I miss Danny and his humorous approach to life. RIP, DG.... you won't be forgotten. Wish we'd had a chance to share a beer or two. Remember when you could witness something as astonishing as this?....sitting together?...with a beam on your face that could actually be seen and not hidden?...feeling the sheer joy of a live performance?....the people preventing this can't be seen....but you could probably fit them all into a fairly small room.

Les Paul did solos like this. On recordings. Double-tracked. This guy did it with 2 hands and 10 fingers... live! The Humbler, indeed.

I grew up outside of DC and was fortunate enough to see Danny on a handful of occasions. I had moved to FL when this aired but I remember feeling like "now you all have some idea!" He was The Telemaster!!!
