The 57ft suburban coach was built and introduced to the British railway network in the 1950's & 60's in an attempt to replace older designs and introduce a more standardised fleet of rolling stock. A longer version with gangway corridors was produced for mainline working whilst the shorter 57 foot coach without a gangway was intended for suburban routes with tighter curves.Join me in this video as I build and review the Dapol 57 ft suburban coach kit in OO gauge.
The Kit i've got here is the C096C OO Gauge Stanier 57ft non corridor brake coach, BR Carmine Unlined M20562, but other versions with different liveries and running numbers are available.

Excellent video. I've only got into model railways since lockdown and been on a limited budget as I was self employed I have been limited to what I can spend. Having seen your video I am now keen to get some of these kits and building them is no issue for me; I'm a fitter so quality is paramount ! You are so right to question the instructions; had this so many times myself. At first you think it's yourself and then instant enlightenment when you realise it's them ! Thanks for the inspiration to try a few kits. Kindest regards, Rick the Bulldog Builder x
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 3 года назад
Thanks Rick! These are some pretty easy (and cheap) models of a good quality which will allow you to build up a fleet of rolling stock quite quickly. I think that if I were to do these models again i'd get a few and do a "production line" on them - being simple colours i'd probably airbrush or spray paint the roof and ends for speed Or, they might make a great conversion into some fictional/custom paint schemes

Nice one. I still have a couple of these kits I made back in the 60s when they were marketed by Rosebud Kitmaster. Value for money even back then and with the eye watering prices of today's carriage models it makes sense to have ago at building these. Enjoyed your build and thank you for sharing. Stay safe.

Hi Matt, I believe they were originally 1950s or 60s Kitmaster Rosebud brand kits then Airfix and then Dapol. They are LMS Stanier coaches from pre BR days (before 1947) and pretty much only seen on the Midland region. The BR mk1 57 foot Suburban coaches were designed using these as a base. Cheers for the build, stay safe.

I bought a load of them over a few months, they are vastly improved by adding metal wheels ( adjust wheelsets with a back to back gauge before fitting) and Hornby small tension locks. Brush windows with Johnsons Klear before installing for another lo-cost improvement. I'm just about to test Keen Systems close couplings and paint interior partitions brown with blue or dark red upholstery. Also about to fit homemade led lights with button cell battery for interior lights.

I would wash the plasitc windows with clear floor polish I got on speacial import from ebay, ink wash door cracks, hair spray / chipping the paint work for fading effect, Use 000 brush with GW bronze, copper, gold colours on the hand rails & door handles. I remeber going on the battle field line with a friend and saw loads of decaying wagons, coachs & locos that could be copied and made well with small grass added and trees trying to grow through the various wagons. I would take your time to experment with more colours more with newer models. It looks great.

Great job on the coach Matt! It runs well on your garden railway (which is looking great by the way). That is annoying that the Dapol instructions are wrong for this kit. I still have one or two of their kits in my stash. I hope the instructions are okay on them!

Apparently in the original book stories, his coaches were indeed bogie versions rather than the 4 wheelers as seen on TV. I think with a lick of paint, these would be ideal to represent them

I don't think Airfix ever sold this in kit form, just as a fully assembled carriage in their model railway (GMR) range. Good spot on the instructions, I suspect Dapol thought they had successfully changed the picture on the instructions but obviously hadn't.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 года назад
Thanks for the info! Yeah, the instructions were annoying because i sat there for about 20 minutes trying to figure out why the tabs didn't line up

Ironically watching this after your decal pronunciation video, and you’ve found a third way to say Dapol that I’ve not heard before 😅😉. Small point, your description at the start discusses the BR Mk1 coach, whereas the kit is an LMS design from the 1930s.

Hi Matt. If only Dapol would consider making a range of GWR coaches as kits then I might consider buying a load of them since I really enjoy building kits such as these as a cost-effective alternative to buying ready-made versions, which seem to be escalating in price willy-nilly and for the slightest of reasons. Nice video though and I enjoyed it very much.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes Год назад
yes, i agree - some low cost kits with reasonable detail that would allow modellers to upgrade and paint them as they like would be amazing! Sadly, I don't think Dapol will invest in the tooling for such a thing, the kits they currently have are all ex-kitmaster or something, so the tooling cost has probably already been paid off

These were ubiquitous on LMS territory, including the London Tilbury and Southend. The BR numbering should be MxxxxxM, or SCxxxxxM or ExxxxxM depending on which region they were operating in. They could probably be hacked to make an LMS EMU in green. I wonder if the windows could be glazed with microscope slide or 35 mm photo slide glass? The originals were very comfortable.

I wonder if the scratches / marks on the clear parts are a result of it being bagged not boxed, and the clear parts being in the same bag as everything else. Excessive handling in the warehouse, despatch, even in the shop by staff and customers may knock the parts together. Not possible if they had a bag of their own.
@ModelMinutes

might well be, or could be a result of a less than careful moulding process
