gets on my nerves everytime i watch it.. let him have his damn moment, most of us can only imagine the emotion you feel winning a national title. it isnt their business how he celebrates haha
@@austingraham6719you say metclf teched him a couple weeks later ? What in some who cares freestyle match ? So what, but if that's what you wanna throw out here then also in a match that didn't matter Caldwell stuck your boy previously. BUT when it counted >> Metcalf literally got thrown onto his back and and got dominated by 4x Caldwell takedowns and WON the match - - - > WHEN IT COUNTED. And all that said, I have huge respect for METCALF, really great wrestler and person, it's your Iowa bias that is so obvious
Caldwell thoroughly dominated every part of this match. He took him down, threw him to his back, countered two of Metcalfs leg attacks and turned them into his points and rode him for over a minute. Yes he stalled at the end, but the match was already over. Get of Metcalfs top Caldwell owned him here and was clearly the better wrestler on this night.
Yeah and people are quick to forget, stalling when it’s short time and your ahead is simply strategy, especially in a NCAA final match... if you don’t want stalking to hurt you then don’t get so far behind. The guys not going to give you more opportunities to score for no reason
Yes I do agree with you but there is no reason that Caldwell had to showboat before the match had concluded. If he really needed to do a flip at the end he should have waited for the clock to run out, maybe even wait for Metcalf to leave altogether.
.io Nation Yeah I would agree with that, the only thing I can think was that he was so excited since what he did was unthinkable, and he basically couldn’t lose. So I understand his lack of restraint but yes I wish he had waited. Also if he did it at like 2 or 3 seconds would have been better but he did it much earlier than usual
Exactly... he’s like “now he needs to get up and walk off” ... like no dude he just pulled the biggest upset in wrestling history let him do what he wants
Hunter Morton biggest wrestling upset in history? Lol you're young. How about Larry Owings over Dan Gable? Doug Blubaugh over Habibi? Rulon Gardner over Alexander Karelin? This wasn't even close. Not too mention Caldwell had already defeated Metcalf in the previous season.
The commentator hated that he was wrong. He wanted to make them believe that Brent Metcalf was going to win. The other commentator said thats what we feel is going to happen. I think the other commentator knew that just because you have a good record does not mean you are going to win.
Looking at this match 6 years later, it's clear that Caldwell was the better wrestler, back spasms or no back spasms. If Metcalf was better, then he should have proven it with points. Caldwell scored his points. Enough said.
Bob Smith that’s pretty funny, cant claim you’re better when somebody beats you 2 out of 3 times especially in such dominating fashion at the highest stage. case closed
Metcalf had a better career for sure. Shame about Caldwell’s shoulder injury. Freaking roller blading . I remember after this tournament caldwell was thought to be the best prospect for international success. ( obviously it was burroughs haha) but caldwell was definitely super talented
man darrion was fine. he won his first championship let him be happy. he flipped with 1 second left lmao commentator was mad metcalf lost. "win like a champ" let him feel the moment for a second
Still can’t figure out in the scramble at the end of the 2nd how Caldwell supported both his and Metcalf’s full body weight balancing using only his head and one leg arched like that. This man is a wizard. Only realistic explanation.
Mark Perry didn't do a celebration dance and a backflip with time on the clock. I suppose you could say Gibbons is biased, towards sportsmanship. Get bent dude.
Thank you!! That’s why I say I never liked grinders like him! They are boring and most of their “offense” is just relying on the other guy to push the pace and tire out.
I remember being an 8th grander in my first year of wrestling watching this after a bunch of my teammates were doing wrestling at the hs state tournament and just being mind blown. Tim Johnson and everyone were talking metcalf this, metcalf that. And when Caldwell hit that head and arm I knew the fireworks had started. It changed me somehow, like made me want to be so explosive in wrestling. And when the match was done i looked at my coach and my dad and my coach just casually goes “Anyone can beat anyone on any day if they believe in themselves.”
@Jamie Koering I remember how everybody said Brent, who was one of the most overrated wrestlers of the decade, won the match before it started and it was really annoying to hear that from ESPN idiots all night long. Darrion deserved to celebrate the way he did. He was never an underdog that night and had beaten Metcalf before.
Also I think that one of the reasons he beat Metcalf is because he wasn't in awe or anything, he just went after him with the mentality he had nothing to loose, which he didn't. Caldwell wasn't all timid like he was facing a great wrestler, he acted like Metcalf was just some scrub. I don't think Metcalf has ever really faced anyone who has wrestled him like that
I come back to it every year haha. One of my first memorable matches growing up going to wrestling matches was watching caldwell upset one of my favorite high school wrestlers pretty early in the state tournament at the time when he was a freshman. He always had that edge
Metcalf is the guy that made Borroughs to move up weight class because he said he was so brutal and made him hate wrestling but Darion just swept him up this shows what this guy is made of
How was this a miracle for Caldwell? Caldwell spladled him in a dual. I wrestled in NJ my whole life and we wrestled Rahway every year where Caldwell was from. They were tough. NJ wrestlers are super confident and should never be counted out along with PA. I went to J Rob 28 day camp in Minnesota and I remember beating state champs from other states that wouldn’t have made it out of my District 16 in NJ. My main go to guys at camp were from NY and Ohio and we would all rack up positives. NY and Ohio wrestlers are also very tough. Respect
@@ultimatefactschampionship8758 Wooow. Say you hate a black wrestler dominating a white wrestler without actually saying it. I would’ve charged him with assault. The whistles blew twice. He was just salty. 😂 Love when people show their true colors
@@calebfoster2520 Showboating is disrespectful, regardless of color. Reverse the roles and I stand by what I said. Say you're racist without saying it. I pray you find a way out of viewing people through such a superficial lens. Good luck to you.
ok why did one of the announcers seem to write off caldwell from the beginning? no one thought caldwell would be in that match? what about his coaches? gtfo
7? No, no you didnt. And if you're gonna criticize metcalf for the push you better criticize caldwell for a celebration with 4 seconds left in regulation
I have never seen hands to the face be as visible as in this match, yet it was not called by the ref. It looks like the unshakable Brent Metcalf was a little shook up after 2 takedowns in the first period, wasn't quite as blood thirsty as he typically is/was. Darion knew what to do to beat Brent, that's for sure, the key factor probably being a lack of respect/fear for the towards the guy.
You think a 3x Jersey state champ is scared by a dude from Michigan? The all NJ ten would beat team Michigan like 60-0 in high school lol Michigan would be lucky to get a win.
"Getting stronger" that's just always been the Iowa gameplan of stall your ass off the first two periods and then look busy for pity points at the end. They seem to be changing that lately, though.
what has metcalf done of note on the international level? metcalf = over hyped / sore loser. if you watch the match metcalf did nothing on the offensive side. when he did caldwell had a counter to everything. the only take metcalf got on caldwell was at the end when caldwell knew it was in the bag.
The goal they were both trying to achieve was a NCAA title. 2 guys competing with the winner getting the ring. This is apples to apples. Caldwell owned Metcalf.
Metcalf would’ve been remembered as a great wrestler but I remember him as the guy who got mad and ran and pushed someone in the air and could’ve hurt him. Losing sucks but do it with class. No one should be able to tell if you won or loss.
You’re right man. And you can tell who’s defending him. Look at their profile. They absolutely HATE when a black man wins. Not like he got in the guys face and yelled. He celebrated with the crowd. Boxers, UFC fighters, all of them run around the cage, do backflips, etc. But I guess when a black man is excited it’s an insult to people. Sounds about right 🤷🏾♂️
cladwell owned this match for any of you that say he was gassed Metcalf was gassed as well did you see his last escape? he could barely stand up. overall Caldwell owned the match
Caldwell beats Metcalf and celebrates rightfully, it’s not easy even winning 20 matches in college but to go 38-0 and beat “The Man” twice is something you should be excited about and if people have a problem with that screw them. Metcalf was a sore loser in this situation even though having a great season with only one loss.
@@ultimatefactschampionship8758 Shut the fuck up, people are allowed to celebrate in great moments. He never directly rubbed it into Metcalf’s face, Metcalf was just salty.
Caldwell was so exhausted he "faked" the injury to get his breath back. Things might have been different if Caldwell had not showed poor sportsmanship by faking an injury.
Caldwell has Metcalf's number cause this is not the first time he beat Metcalf. This happens in sports all sometimes. No matter how good you are, there is always someone who seems to be made to be the perfect counter.
I think anyone who wins a championship at an elite level like Division fucking 1 wrestling, can do whatever they want to celebrate. For those of you who don't like it, are you even a wrestler or anything? This is a pinnacle of success for a wrestler, best of the best here. What the fuck have you done?? It doesn't matter, you did it your way anyways right??
I dont think the push was bad sportsman ship, technically the clock was still going, and so was Metcalfs will to fight. If anything the premature celebration was a spit on his honor, i mean he just turned his back and ran from him. the act and reaction was fine to me, nothing escalated out of it
10:46 there is still time when he starts running around the matt to flip in front of the camera. you can just watch the video to make sure im not lying, and get the fuck off my comment. srsly find something better to do i commented last summer
Hate when commentator or anyone for that matter makes a statement "(insert loser's name) is in better shape now than he was when he lost earlier in the year or last time they wrestled" .... no shit homy. So is the dude who won the match earlier in the year at the apparent time the loser was in worse shape. Anyone who trains at this level is in better shape as the year goes on. Every freaking weak they get better and better. They also get in better and better shape as the season goes on. No one sits out and is content with wherever they are at in regard to health and stamina - dumb ass. If they are not working hard and constantly and consistency improving then they are NOT making it to the finals of the NCAA. What kind of comment is that anyway? Metcalfe got out wrestled, had nothing to do with who is in better shape. Great wrestling by Caldwell, glad he won
Metcalf's confidence was shot with that headlock. You can tell he second guessed and was very defensive after that. In his other matches he is nowhere near this defensive. That throw was the end of it for him.
not many guys with back spasms are NCAA CHAMPS though. Great win dc you beat the snot piss out of him and the metcalf faithful still crying about you celebrating is priceless! Metcalfs biggest offensive output of the match was the push during the flip and time had already expired. Hilarious
Michael Jung Oh so that's how it works. I'll go and rob some people (since I need money) and then kill them ('cause I don't give a fuck), then I'll apologize and it'll be OK, thanks man :D
Great match from another great Jersey wrestler! Caldwell didn't beat up Metcalf, but he sure did dominate him. FYI: John Smith is the best American wrestler ever. Gable may be the most important American wrestler (and certainly its best coach), but Smith is the most accomplished and the most talented (2 Gold Medals, 6 World Championships).
Actually, Baumgartner also won an Olympic bronze medal, so four medals in four Olympics. However, in discussing most accomplished wrestler, it is Olympic gold medals and World Championships that count. Smith has 2 Gold Medals and 6 World Championships; Baumgartner has 2 Golds and 3 World Championships. Smith is more accomplished.
"Back spasms" if it hurt so bad for him to stop in the middle of the NCAA finals than why was he able to recover so quickly once 30+ seconds ran down without any real help from medic. Honestly. Both are astounding wrestlers but cmon.
+JJD Actually Darrion Caldwell record was 37-1 before that match because he lost by injury default to Kyle Terry of Oklahoma because of a back spasm... Caldwell style is just better than Metcalf www.flowrestling.org/video/136310-kyle-terry-v-darrion-caldwell#.Vmt86HQo5nE
The ref might also yell "NEUTRAL" when somebody goes from being controlled to an escape, to say that he got an escape and earned his point. Anytime points are awarded, the ref raises one of his arms. One has a green band, one has a red one. Each wrestler also has a band on his ankle, one wrestler with green and one wrestler with red. When the ref raises his green band arm, the wrestler in a green band earns points, and vice versa. Hope this helps.
Whenever someone on my team would face a top ranked guy he would say: “so what if he’s ranked? It’s not like he gets a knife or something for an advantage. Go after him” clearly Caldwell had that mindset here going with no fear of Metcalf
NO HE'S NOT! They have wrestled two matches first metcalf got pinned second is this match where metcalf got his ass whooped raw. Caldwell has PROVED to be a better wrestler than metcalf.
