Today's episode covers Dark Chambers for the Atari 7800. It is based on the 1983 computer game Dandy by John Palevich, which was the direct inspiration for the classic arcade game Gauntlet. Developed by Sculptured Software, let’s play Dark Chambers and find out if it is any good or not.

This game was one of my very favorite ones on Atari 7800. I remember I used to save one of the bombs for a later level where all the enemies were in a big cluster. I think it was level X.

Good review. I like that you keep reviewing 7800 games, it seems that I just don't hear much about the games on that system and it tends to get overlooked. Just because a system wasn't the "best" of it's time doesn't mean that the games for it aren't good and that it isn't worth collecting for. As a kid I ended up with a TI-99A. I have never had the illusion that it could stand up as a great console but it got me into gaming and it still holds a special place in my gaming heart. I will be jumping at a chance to score a 7800. I'm a Gauntlet fan and this game and Ninja gold look like they would be a lot of fun to try.

I wanted the NES for Christmas (1988??) & my parents got a 7800 instead. I was initially very upset, but I learned to love the 7800 & although I wound up getting a NES the next year, this is still one of my most beloved & nostalgic consoles

I wish I had access to this game back in the day when it came out. I love everything about it! The box art looks great. And I could just stare at the intro screen for an hour with that rough digital music playing. Forget Picasso; retro adventure graphics are works of art! 🎨

This is actually closer to the excellent Atari 8-bit game Dandy, which served as the inspiration for Gauntlet.

Sweet review Phil! I recently picked up a copy of this one myself. It's an awesome game in the dungeon crawl, and hack and slash genres. Including a recommendation, and a link to your video on my review video.

Playing this on the 50th anniversary, and the game has some great ideas, is fun, but it's easy, and too quiet. The graphics, and main character animation are very Atari, and by that I mean out of touch for the time. This game could've been great if they just put in some decent music, and a walking sound. The game just gets dull pretty quickly

This is considered rare nowadays?? Wow this is one of the several games I ordered N.I.B. from O'Shea LTD for just 88 cents back in the late 90's...Seems so unreal now, but it has been actually 20 years or more already lol

I’m a Gauntlet fan so maybe I should check it out, but I don’t think it’ll ever be anywhere near Gauntlet

Does the game shamus (c64/ti 994a) have any relevance to being pre -gauntlet and pre dark chambers????

The enemies in the 2600 do look better than this

So Atari just kept repackaging the 2800 into the 52, and 78 huh? This is a joke no wonder they went out if business. Compare this to zelda...

Seriously Atari 7800 sucks! This is pathetic!

The 7800 rocks you mean, right?

I hope you've grown up in the last 7 years since your initial comment. As it stands you sound like a fanboy who hates on anything that isn't your favorite. The 7800 was a competent system for its time with some fun games that many enjoyed. Was it better than the NES or Master System? No not on a technical level, but it still had fun games that many enjoyed. So "sucks" is subjective as is "pathetic." I hope you are now more objective and less opinionated in your statements.
