My sympathies for Dr. Hoodbhoy. Got his BS, MS, PhD from the world's top university MIT. Then, he spends his life among a society that has no appreciation for even basic education or honesty. It must be a deeply frustrating experience.
Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy is a very different cut from an average Pakistani intellectual. But,why did another MIT- trained Dr.AYESHA SIDDIQUI a neuroscientist turn into an Islamic _mujahaideen_ ?😏🙄👎🇵🇰👎👎👎🇵🇰
Reading namaz 5 times a day is better than all this modern "education" ... Life on earth is like a mere blink of an eye compared to Jannah. Also if Sharia law gets established in Pakistan, Allah will reward it with Oil and gold and there won't be any need for all these degrees.
After so many years, I have heard a well educated pakistani professor..who spoke from his heart. Bleeding in his heart...who genuinely feels for his education system of his country. I am a business man from india..and watched the whole interview..even though there is time constraint.

In 1970 I was studying in. New York and went to NIT New York Institute of Technology to see a friend , I was waiting till I saw him with few of his classmates came out I was introduced to some of them ,one of the student asked me where I was from I told him Pakistan, he replied we were just studying about Pakistan I asked what? He replied . The economy of Pakistan is going down ,and will keep going down and down till it hit the rock bottom. When I return to Karachi my home town in my summer vacation I tried to convince my parents to move to USA . My father who was educated in USA told my mother tell your son he is crazy , he want us to follow him . Later I packed my baggage and came to USA more than 50 years ago . Today I. look back and think I did the thing .

I would like to add my thoughts on the future of Pakistan. Until we remove " Islamic" from the Republic of Pakistan, I see no real progress. Religious minorities are marginalized at every level. Who knows that maybe a Christian, Hindu or an Ahmadi Einstein is living amongst us. Religion and faith are your personal business that cannot be imposed on others. One example is Israel, a country created for all Jews, but it does not call itself the Jewish Republic of Israel. Look how far they have gone. Arabs account for 21% of the population, enjoying equal rights.
They will never ket it happen because they think it’s a huge blow to their ideology. They are making money by doing politics over these issues so their shops will get shut and why would they want that to happen?
Pakistan should learn from UAE, UAE doesn't have these things at all, despite being only 50 years old. UAE were a Bedouin country just 50-60 years ago, but look where they are now. The simplest reason because they erased all these backwardness like religious bigotries, ethnic problems etc... they only talk about humans only
It's funny how Indian and Pakistani people may pretend to be different but the culture and the habits are exactly the same. Nepotism, superstition, and being proud to be illeterate is prevalent at most places in the north-Indian Subcontinent. The coastal south and the mountains I would say are different in this manner, may be it's the oceans and the mountains that make you self- reflect.
I don't mean to offend my muslim brothers but I genuinely think Islam is the major issue behind the problem behind low success in scientific world and regarding Pakistan india relationship too Islam is major issue. Coz in hindu,sikh,buddh,jainism we are not taught to discriminate with other religions but in Islam it teaches you to discriminate between Muslims and other religion. I feel if couple of teaching are updated in Islam we all can genuinely live peacefully like a big family.

Pakistan’s biggest problem, like the Prof. was saying, is they are confused about their roots. They think they need to justify their existence and hence the overt display and attachment to the religion. All they have to do is proudly accept their roots that their ancestors were Hindu who chose to convert to Islam. 🤷🏻♂

What a positive thinker I have seen for first time in Pakistan where people neither come out of their cost , creed and Maslak which they give so importance than that of the love of their creater and their country. They never think on the interests of country but for their personal matters. The reason in MIT they don’t talk about politics because it is not needed there, politics is already established there, for which they have paid huge sacrifices and what we see today is result of those sacrifices. Professor Hoodbhoy is a gem from Pakistan. I always love to hear his views. What he said about the mindset of Pakistanis is equally applicable in India. Our educational institutions suffer from the same politics of caste and regionalism. Corrupt practices dominate in the appointments of vice chancellor and on other administrative positions. As a result barring a few most of the universities lack quality in education and research output.
At least in science teach western books, at university undergraduate level. Even in Arabic countries now in science and engineering and medical they are teaching western texts with some problem solving. In west problem solving is essential in physical sciences and engineering. Problem solving makes understand a lot better.

44:30: Pakistan had the SAME number of years that India got after the Britishers left. India managed to create many educational institutes (IIT's, IIM's, REC's and Medical colleges etc) and got its population on the road of education where they have been consistently performing both in India and abroad at various levels. Pakistani rulers after independence simply did not focus on education (which they could have) had they the sense and foresight. No God of ANY religion is coming to anyone's help if you don't have the education to hold your own in the Global market. Don't see anything changing in Pakistan unless the top leaders really want to come out of their cave man mentality and raise the awareness of education among the general population. The more a person is educated the more he moves away from animal like violent mentality and tendencies and starts contributing towards a harmonious communal existence.

1:26:38 the doctor should know or the one doing the interview, that India has had interminable debates over nuclear power plants. We have EVERYTHING in the civil domain, and we've DECIDED to move away from this previously hazardous mode to solar and wind energy- especially after the Fukushima Daichi meltdown. Building reactors here is not much of a big deal, but the environmentalists and other lobbies have successfully stopped their implementation. For good, I'll venture.
