Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing the enigmatic gate of DEATH that is The VEIL.
Now, if one were to venture through the corridors of the Ministry of Magic for long enough, they’d likely, eventually, find themselves standing before the enigmatic Veil - a haunting manifestation nestled within the Death Chamber of the Department of Mysteries.
And when faced with such an enigmatic wizarding structure, it’s hard not to ask questions. What IS the Veil? Who created it? And how does the Veil connect to the wizarding world's understanding of life, death, and the beyond?
Join me as we apparate through time and space, diving deep into the mysteries of the Veil and shedding light on its presence within Wizarding History.

Here's an idea: What if the story was essentially true, but the river that the Peverell brothers encountered was no river at all, but an unstable rift between the realms of the living and the dead? One which, if you got too close, would pull you into it, never to return. Sensing the danger, the brothers used their magic to construct a barrier from the surrounding stones that contained the rift, what we know as the Veil. If you were stupid enough to walk through it you'd be just as dead, but with the barrier in place you could be near it with no harm done. Now, thestrals are sometimes seen as bad omens, as only those who have seen someone die can see them, and perhaps they frequented the area. Since this was long before the Ministry was built, it's not inconceivable that this was at the time a random spot in the countryside where trees and animals would be common. Let us say that among these powerful wizards, Antioch in particular was skilled at making wands. Taking a branch from a nearby tree, which happened to be elder (a wood often associated with repelling the devil) and that might have absorbed some of the deathly energies of the rift, and winding into it the tail hair of a thestral, created a very powerful wand that pulled not only from its owner, but from the other side of the Veil as a source of power. Cadmus, not to be outdone, took a sample of the stone and fashioned it into a jewel-like ornament, possessing a connection to the rift much like his brother's wand, but by his own spellwork could instead summon the likeness of one who had long since passed on. As this was going on, Ignotus noticed that the rippling surface of the now-contained rift concealed what was beyond the barrier and almost seemed solid enough to touch. Daring to draw a portion of it to him and sever it, it solidified further until it was a shimmering silvery cloth that, when placed over him, made him completely invisible to anyone alive. With their task done and their trophies in hand, the brothers went on their way, unaware of the marks they would leave upon wizard history. But in the words of MatPat, that's just a theory. Thanks for reading.

I propose that the resurrection stone has been used wrong since death gave it as a gift. The stone is obviously a peice of the veil but what if instead of being any random peice it was actually the key to allowing people to come back threw the veil. Death gave the stone to the brother knowing he wouldn't know how to correctly use it thats why it only shows ghost like people and doesn't actually resurrect people. The key to the stone is reconnecting it with the veil only then could it potentially bring someone back threw the door. Think of the stone as the key death locked it from one side ( we know this because you can still pass threw but not come back) and gave it away knowing no-one would know how to unlock its full potential..... anyway just my theory on the matter always found it strange the resurrection stone can't actually do what it's name suggests so this could be a possible explanation

I think The Tale of Three Brothers was inspired by the historical Peveral Brothers but that it wasn't the literal events of The Brothers. Rather that The Peveral Brothers were powerful wizards who took magic to dangerous and unnatural lengths. "Death" in the story would have just been a personification to show the consequences of their hubris. The oldest making an "Unbeatable Weapon" and getting killed outside of battle. The middle brother trying to "resurrect the dead" only to join them himself, and the humble youngest brother who made a simple tool that would protect others and he met his end peacefully at the end of his life after passing his cloak down to his descendents. The Hallows were just magical artifacts created by powerful forgotten magic rather than something supernatural in origin. And I'd wager The Veil is no diffrent. Simply an incredibly powerful magic artifact made with lost magic. 10-1 its not a portal as much as it just instantly kills who ever passes through it. The body being magically unmade in the process.

@@kaimagnus5760Now I’m considering the hypothesis that there is a finite amount of Magic that can be used. Consider it a giant imaginary pool that began untouched, full and power at the beginning of time, and everytime some used magic, the pool loses volume. Perhaps wizards and witches earlier in time were more powerful because there was more Magic in the pool that someone could utilize. Now there is merely a bucket of Magic left to draw from. Idk

I think in a way though, Harry also was either very clearly the true bearer of the hallows or at least represented them from the very beginning. His wand was regularly able to defeat Voldemort (blocking the killing curse), he regularly found himself in situations bringing his parents ghosts back to help him (or even with the mirror) and in the end it was he who regularly escaped death, until he finally took off his cloak, walked to the forest and embraced it.

That part of the Resurrection Stone being a small piece that fell off the frame of the Vail is very interesting and very well thought out. The Vail reminds me of that light tunnel in the island from LOST, where Jacob pushes his brother in and he becomes The Smoke.

In my Head Canon, the Veil found inside the Ministry of Magic’s Department of Mysteries is a one-way portal into the Void, also known as the Great Beyond. It is a self-contained force of nature, older than the world, older than time, older even than Death itself. It was not “created” by Death. If anything, should Death actually exist as some kind of being, he probably entered the Wizarding World through the Veil sometime in the distant past. The archaic stone archway surrounding the Veil is what anchors it into the Wizarding World and it probably originated in some long ago castle or stronghold. My story canon also holds that literally every fictional universe has a portal somewhere that leads to the Void-one notable example being the Dark Portal of Talo from Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

It could be that at some point someone got ahold of the Elder Wand and Resurrection Stone (but not the cloak, unless it was one of Harry’s ancestors) and used both to create the Veil. Or it’s suppose to be a Dolmen type structure that is still active.

I always saw it as the ability to hear the voices behind the veil worked the same as the thestrals where you had to have witnessed death(someone die) to be able to see it so anyone who can see a thestral can hear the voices from behind the veil, Also a possible explanation for the veils construction could be a very powerful wizard who had the unique ability to see the spirits of lost souls of both Wizard and Muggles and decided to try and make the veil that he could guide lost souls to so they can then pass over and be at peace so he created the veil and the department of mysteries was formerly his lab that was later found and expanded upon by the pevril brothers who then created the deathly hallows using the research of the wizard who became known as death and then when the ministry of magic was created the built it around this site

There is a theory that the brothers had created so called 'pre-Hallows' before creating the main ones: Antioch created the Philosopher's stone, Cadmus created the Veil and Ignotus created the Pensieve.
@chrischristian7511
@chrischristian7511 7 месяцев назад
I’ve heard a similar theory The brothers discovered the mirror of erised, the veil, and the pensieve. They were ancient magical artifacts from a long lost generation of powerful wizards. Antioch discovered the mirror and saw himself as the most powerful wizard of all time. Cadmus discovered the veil and nearly went mad trying to learn how to use it to resurrect his wife. Ignotus discovered the pensieve and learned to appreciate the value of being invisible when reviewing a memory. Once each of the brothers had encountered their respective pre-hollows they were inspired to create their own version of these artifacts to suit their personal goals. Antioch made the elder wand to fulfill his desire for power he saw in the mirror. Cadmus created the stone because he couldn’t figure out how to make the veil bring his wife back. Ignotus created the cloak to expand his invisibility to both memories and his lived experiences. After each brother passed away their lives became inspiration for a fairy tale warning children about the dangers of abusing magic for power or to cheat death.

I really enjoy this line of theories. I think it also possible that the hallows were created somehow, as opposed to gifts from "Death". One thing that always stuck out to me, was when Harry first got the cloak. Ron instantly recognized what it was and claimed they are rare. This implies that there are others (though maybe knockoffs of this original), that have been created. If it was that lucrative of an item, you'd think a small child wouldn't immediately recognize it.

It _is_ plausible and more likely to think that the Peverell brothers _themselves_ are the creators of the Deathly Hallows, and I'd bet my own wand that Hermione Granger herself would strongly agree with that theory, as even Albus Dumbledore voiced his doubts that the Three Brothers met the personification of Death on a lonely road, and we all know Hermione has a stubborn adherence to logic in spite of being a witch talented in magic But personally, I feel the question itself is moot. I feel The Veil is really a mystery that's not truly meant to be solved and is more a means to help one understand the concept of death while also being cautious around it, since passing through it is pretty much the same as dying I am open-minded but I do keep a sensible sense of skepticism and logic but not to the point that I have to know the workings of the natural wonders of our world. Does knowing a rainbow is simply a trick of light through moisture left over from a rain shower make it any less beautiful and wondrous and inspiring? I honestly am not sure if there truly is a personification of Death in the Wizarding World, but even if there was I wouldn't really want to find out. The "Tale of the Three Brothers" was actually inspired by a real-life fairy tale about three men who went looking for Death (the personification) and they found Death in the forms of their own demises, meaning it was a cautionary tale The Death portrayed in "The Three Brothers" felt rather petty and akin to the vain and selfish gods of Greek myth in how he "felt cheated" by the Brothers avoiding their own deaths by using magic to make a bridge over a dangerous river "where travelers usually drowned". The fact Death "congratulated" the Brothers on their magical skills and offering them each a "prize" in recognition, clearly a trap to beguile them so he could snare them anyway, only to be outsmarted by the youngest, who successfully lived to a ripe old age and meet Death on his _own_ terms In other depictions of Death, modern or otherwise, Death is often portrayed as indifferent yet devoted to his role in taking those who have died on to their afterlives, a more... orderly figure who fulfills his role in maintain the balance of life and death. Of course, Death can be portrayed differently based on how others see him/her/it in order to have a "Death" that fits their idea and the role they want for Death to fulfill in their own stories, whether they're modern fiction, cultural depictions, or even in traditional folklore, and yet for the most part Death does not actively seek to kill someone, simply waiting for them to die before taking action (exceptions vary, such as trying to cheat death for example). Sure, the Death in "The Three Brothers" did not directly kill the oldest and middle brothers, but he did set them up to meet their ends with his "gifts", and only the youngest outwitted Death by using his own cloak against him, presenting us with an example that Death, though inevitable, is not truly unbeatable. Not in the sense of "conquering death" like many believe or think, but in the sense that Death can be outdone in some way Did Death truly create the Deathly Hallows? Did Death create The Veil? I don't think we'll ever truly know... unless JK Rowling confirms one way or another

One of the most interesting things about the folklore of magic, is that the term of "The Viel" always represented as a metaphor for a barrier or membrane between the physical and metaphysical. It could be plausible to hypothesize, that since the Wizarding World has closer ties to the metaphysical, unlike the Muggle World. I do feel with the tampering that the Ministry has done with the Veil over time. That the line it represents in the allegory as a barrier or line between life and death is much thinner in the Wizarding World. Plus it becomes a threshold between the two worlds over time. Thin, and blurred between the realities.

Ending with the cloak with death reluctantly gave, suggesting the cloaks production was particularly difficult and no further progress was made after that.

I subscribed to the Super Carlin Brother's theroy that the Peveril Brothers were very talented wizards who created the Hallows. I dont think there is an actual death who gave them the Hallows. The Carlin Brothers also have a theroy about the veil which is really good. I subscribe to that theroy too.

Without proper novels, MACUSA will never have the depth as the Ministry of Magic but I wonder if they have wonderful and evocative chambers, yaknow besides the [i'm never watching that scene again] nightmare fuel execution [without due process] chamber.

And the concept of death being a being has been around for centuries, alot of people call him "the grim reaper". Does a skeletal being in a big black roab with a sythe comes and takes dying people to the after life? Its an ancient myth in many mythologies. 🤷‍♀️ Death has been something humanity has questioned since the beginning of humanity. We fear the unknown.

Here is a thought… if acquiring and holding all 3 hollows makes you the master of death; then couldn’t the person holding all 3 artifacts freely passed through the vail and then return to the world of the living?

Let's take the Hallows at face value. We know the cloak is passed from father to son, and Harry gets it from his father..... What if the Potter line is descended from that Peverell brother? Also, what if the Hallows are what actually protected Harry? It seems likely to me the kind of artefact you would use to try to protect your baby - if so Harry would've had the cloak on him both times Voldemort tries kill him. Also consider Dumbledore must've had all 3 Hallows at a point, Maybe for 11-12 years!

Both the Pensive (which was already there before Hogwarts was built) and the veil seem like previous iterations - a prototype if you will - of the final, "Hallows" 🤔🤔 🤔🤔

🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁 THE LION WAS HERE 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁 No. 2500 -----> Yes, of course death is real, and we all will face it in our own time and way. As for the Chamber of Death, this too is real, at least is so seems to me in the context of the story. Now I think that it was created by wizards who wanted to explore the realms of the living and the dead. The idea was to go in, look around and come back with a report. Like explorers visiting a cave looking for treasure, but instead find a nest of manticore. Naturally they do not return and so the legend of the cave grows. Naturally nobody can possibly return from the chamber of death and thus nobody knows what is on the other side of the veil. Upon death most people simply disappear, go into the ground into the ocean, or into the veil, no report ever returns from the other side. Those wizards who became ghosts cannot tell of the other side because they have never been there. Professor Dumbledore mentions several times to "Go On", but then cannot tell what is beyond. It is like placing your hopes on Heaven, but remember that the prospect of Hell also remains. Dante's Divine Comedy illustrates all three options: Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, but it, like the Bible itself is but a story which you can choose to believe or ignore. (At you own great peril... but the choice remains with you.) But there is no half way point. Either you live or you die, and mankind has invented many ways to die, but none to return

Perhaps the only ones who can hear the voices beyond the veil are the same as those who actually saw and understood death? Seems like it is possible as only Harry and Luna heard the voices.

I think 3 wizards, not necessary brothers by birth but in wizardry crossed a bridge 1 day that crumbled beneath thier feet. They were powerful and evil, maybe it was because of a fight with other wizards.1 broke his wand, the others fiancee was killed in front of thier very eyes by the rumble and the other most likly was scarred in to seeing terrestrials that day. There is a whole dept that looks it the mysteries of death, maybe a lot becomes seen once youve faced death and the brothers were the 1st unspeakables to explore that.

Hasn't this portal between life and death been in multiple mythologies? I mean many cultures believe there is a gateway between the land of the living and the dead. Heck its even in religion. Heck, many believe this concept is real, and that there really is a portal.

Ok, so hear me out.... The Peverell didn't create the Hollows right? Death gifted them to them and they took them as their own and, each one with his own, split, took different ways and, in doing that, helped to keep the Hollows apart. Now, the true power of the Hollows is only exploited when they are together, hence, the true Master of Death is the one who brings them together under one only person's ownership. When giving away the gifts, Death bet on human greedines to keep them apart. The Veil could have been the ultimate challenge to become the true Master of Death, as only the person who truly own and master the 3 Hollows can "unVeil" the secret between the 2 realms. Also, the arc itself is not in its original position.

Through time, history, religion, and fictional works, there has always been a struggle between good and evil. David v Goliath. Terrorist v soldiers and civilians. Harry v Tom. Sauron v middle earth. Jedi v sith. Gov v the people. There is always struggle in fiction and the real world. I’m not going to get into religion. To each their own on their beliefs, but there has always been some version of God and the Devil. No matter what your views are though, the one constant to everything is that where there is life, there will be death. Even Flamel met death eventually. Although I do not believe death is a wizard, but something else entirely as unique as God and the Devil. Unlike good v evil or God v the Devil, death is there to help us move from the land of the living to beyond. Those who reject death end up as ghosts. For Harry, had he chosen to board the train in limbo, I believe death would have been the conductor. The Hallows and Veil being created by death makes sense. Being on the same power level as God and the Devil, death is the only one who could have created them.
