Other protagonists: *being in a rush to heal so they can keep fighting* Bearer of the Curse being an undead of culture and sipping the succulent liquid fire: 🗿
Ds1 protag chugs ut fast. Ds2 protag: "This liquid fire has a hint of a red-haired firekeeper virgin ashes and notes of chicken grease in it... truly sublime."
Every other souls protagonist: "I must consume this medicine and get right back into action as soon as I can!" Bearer of the Curse: "Ahhhhhh, a flask of the finest herbal tea in all of the lands, I shall enjoy this sweet, sweet delicacy." *SHLUUURRRRRRPP* *smacks lips* "Ahhhh, good stuff 👌"
Not only is the animation long but the actual healing is super slow too, you almost have to do a 2 chug if you think youre gonna get punished so you heal fast enough
Many say the reason we got the masterpiece known as ds3 is because ds2 was so bad, Miyazaki couldn't end it on a bad note. So we thank ds2. You had to walk backwards so ds3 could sprint 🎉
Stop talking about realism when the exact same character swings with ease a sword ten folds his own weight. I don't think drinking/walking coordination is that much of a problem when you're capable of hopping endlessely around giant ennemies while wearing a full armor set and swinging à big iron stick.
@@remilenoir1271 he swings with ease because he drinks every last drop of the estus flask. u can't just chug it like you're trying to impress the ladies. if u try to sip while running u can spill a little bit off your mouth and worse, u can choke. Which is a real cause of death. Think about it...
@@thereformer0079 don't know about others but it was indeed infuriating for me as I played the entire game solo and entered the DLC areas only on NG+1. Everyone talks about the horses, the blinding snow (and the runback, while not too long, was still pretty bad considering the other issues. But even the boss fights were bad. If you can't kill the first one within momments of the 2nd one's landing, you're probably gonna die because handling both is almost impossible. And then by the end of the 2nd boss, it also gets a buff which makes the fight even longer. Many people defeated them first time (Vaati, for example). So they can only imagine the pain in the repeat runback. But while I can't remember how I ended up defeating them, I sure remember an aweful lot of runbacks, and they were quite frustrating.
You know it's funny the power of public perception. This hilarious video is how many perceive the DS2 drink animation, because it has been drilled into their heads for 10 years that the Estus animation is so much slower than the other games. While it is true the time to drink is slower than in DS1, the time to put the Flask away *after* drinking in DS2 is actually much faster than DS1's Flask put away animation. Coupled with the boost to consumable use speed from raising Agility (100 AGL), the entire DS2 Estus drink and put away animation is *SHORTER* than DS1's. That at 100 AGL you can regain control of your character and move *SOONER* in DS2 than DS1 after drinking Estus was brought to my attention a few months ago, and it completely blew my mind how we all just took this "fact" for granted for so long. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E5-RcjcVowQ.html Even at minimal Agility, it's only around 1/6 of a second slower than DS1's complete animation. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oaVZFXW_R3k.html So if you were going to get smacked in the face in DS2 for panic healing, you would have gotten smacked in the face for panic healing in DS1 as well.
I actually disliked ds1 estus a lot more than ds2 estus, it feels like you get locked into a 5 second animation and there's never really a safe time to drink if there's an enemy within 100 feet of you. At least in ds2 you can move a little bit at the start of the animation and the follow up animation seems faster
You're already wasting points on ADP, the idea you need to waste more on AGL to drink faster just seems like a slap in the face, and sometimes that actually happens
@GamingTonberry AGL scales off adp? Also ds2 gives you a stupid amount of souls, more than enough to create a build, "wasting" levels of adp only affects the first hour of the game and the difference isn't even that noticeable
@@samthepigman4069 Agility also scales off Attunement if one prefers to put it in a skill with more benefits, it will just rise slower since ATN doesn't raise AGL as fast as Adaptability.
I had this idea that a sip of Estus was liquid bonfire. It takes away all the pain and fear for those few seconds you drank it, and it legitimately takes the Bearer of the Curse out of the fight. Thats why it takes forever to drink. Its like being wet and cold, then stepping into a hot shower, only to get tossed right back out into the elements.
Not only is the animation slower by default, the actual heal is slow too. It's so slow that sometimes I'd actually plan around it and start the heal while I was at high enough HP that it'd be wasted if it was instant, knowing that when I get hit by the next attack during the animation I'll take enough damage that by the time the heal finishes I'll be at full HP anyway. God I love DS2.
Let's give some respect for the elder as Lifegems are OP; they stack healing/second and you can pop them while walking, which is the first time in Souls games. Estus is actually good late game and combining it with lifegems hp/s is just crazy. I'm glad DS3 Estus combines the best features of both Estus and Lifegems. Then you buy some Lifegems, pop them and then the souls you wasted are accounted for your Soul Memory...
@@abyssalrayz9499elden ring at least has various enemies that start attacking the moment you press x, the only instance in DS3 of consistently getting punished for healing is against champion gundyr, and that's because he won't give you a break
I actually love the long ass animations in DS2, it adds a feeling of urgency and commitment that other games don't have, it feels like you're actually using a sword and playing as wandering knight on a journey Plus it makes for an amazing pvp and invasion gameplay
DS2 healing system as a whole feels unique in it's "halfway there" point of existence. Playstation exclusive Souls games (Demon's souls, Bloodborne) mostly used farmable consumables as the sole healing method, mainstream Souls (and Sekiro) used Estus flasks with consumables being rare and powerful (most forms of consumable healing in DS1 healed way more than simple estus sip, but they were in limited supply) but DS2 weirdly married those two systems. Result is kinda polarising, I never used soul gems that much but some people swear by them.
Do you know what the weirdest thing is? Dark Souls 2's healing actually saved me multiple times. I had moments when I was hit down to around 1 hp.... but since I still had the Estus effect, it healed me back up. It was rare, but when that happened... that long lasting sippy felt refreshing.
I think DS2 makes it better, because you really have to wait for a good time to heal instead of instantly hitting the heal button in panic after getting hit. Say what you want but for me this game really makes you think strategically, take your time and think through your every move (even though there are times where the game gets unnecessarily ganky and frustrating, almost forcing you to cheese)
It's insane that ds2 is 10 years ago. I bought the game on release and it was my first time being part of a gaming community. 2014 was a very fun- memeful year I look fondly on. Time needs to stop, it's going way too fast
Oh c'mon... DS2 has been my first Souls game and what got me interested in the series, but... Eeehm, yeah, the healing is truly something else. I still remember when i first played the original Dark Souls (after DS2) and when i needed to heal, the first thought: "WHY SO FAST?"
Even as a poor design choice, i think tying animation speed to a stat made the game harder in a way that the other games could not. Sure you could max int and faith to get full scaling with Hexes and one-shot with Climax...but your defensive stats like adp would be left out cold and there would be a greater risk of dying in exchange for greater power in the lower level brackets.
Can't wait for the weirdoes that will start telling everyone in the comments about how this is the best game in the series and that every who things otherwise is wrong.
I love how most of this channel is serious topic and then you have shitpost like this Btw today is also Monster Hunter anniversary, meaning that two goated games released 10 years apart !
Remember when community understood that deliberate action and stamina management and animation locks were GOOD and what made those games UNIQUE? Instead of complaining that estus takes too long to drink in DS1? God, current From fans are garbage.
