One of the Biggest Mysteries in Dark Soul 3, solving what exactly is happening with the Pus of Man will required looking at some of the other transformations happening throughout Lothric - and solving it will answer a lot of other questions.

this would make perfect sense. If the puss of man becomes a dragon then once the fire is left to fade then humanity will be corrupted to the point to which everyone becomes arch dragons and then we are back to the age of ancients. One thing about the maggot monsters. They are super weak to fire. Just like the puss of man.

It makes me wonder how it was possible for dragons be exist before humans, who were only brought into existence from the first flame.
@Sunwakka

Scott Morales Where did they come from? That may be a question that isn´t asked enough that could reveal a lot. Since everything in dark souls seem to be of a cycle of some kind then it would make sense that they are too.
@ScottyV23
@ScottyV23 7 лет назад
Sunwakka Yeah it definitely seems like larger cycles at play, but we have to remember that From Software is just one company that can't write endless story lines and plot points into every aspect of their games, so it's a rather high (albeit unfortunate) probability that there's no true answer to the dragons origins conundrum, at least from an officially sanctioned standpoint. So with that in mind my guess is this: Humans aren't the only creatures that have the ability to turn into dragons. Any creature with sentience and the ability to be infected with the dark sign are prone to turn into dragons under the right conditions. This would solve the problem with dragons existing before humans, because other creatures could turn into dragons too. There may have been an ancient race that got infected with the dark sign, and they became the first dragons. That's just my random theory lol, but I like it because it kind of fills in the gap for some potential plot holes.

Sunwakka which is why we need the for to end that age. But when the fire end the dark ness comes back and the age of man comes back
@chadpunte1731

the darksign? or humanity? I thought the darksign was just a curse put on humanity to extend the age of light which tied the darksoul (humanity) to the flame preventing the era of dark so long as humanity existed to kindle the flame. Thus depriving undead from their rightful era in the cycle.

Manus in Ds1 is clearly an extreme case of Pus of Man. He has similar wooden parts and that dark blackness about him. Not to mention the glowing red eyes. I really think it's just unstable humanity like his soul says.

See, I totally agree with your last statement that the dragons and the age of ancients are part of an even bigger cycle. I think dark souls 1 gives that away when we see hollow looking creatures creeping up on the first flame. It's cycles within cycles. Cycle-ception, if you will.

Yeah, and that ties into the idea of the hollow as "the true form of man" that Yuria, Aldia and Vendrick all reference.

I'm more convinced that the abyss is a natural force meant to return the world to its gray, primordial state. The abyss locusts literally eat everything in their path, and the pus of man, abyssal in origin, turns man into dragon.
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
I wouldn't say it's natural, but I think if you include the abyss under the idea of the corruption in general, then you're dead on the money.
@SwitcherooU
@SwitcherooU 7 лет назад
Why isn't it natural? Are you saying that the corrupting was done on purpose by Lothric so that they could create dragons?
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
With the pus of man, yeah, it seems like they're artificially created. However, I meant more just the way the world is becoming more like the age of ancients. I can't explain it fully in just a comment, but it seems like the End of Fire ending is the way the world is naturally supposed to go, and it's what the narrator refers to when she says only dark will remain.

Just went back to watch your Shackles video as well, so I'm pondering both here: I think it's most likely the Pus of Man are not becoming dragons, because there are in fact no actual dragons in Dark Souls 3. I know it's the same old pedantry about drakes v dragons, but if anything Archdragon Peak reaffirms that dynamic more than ever. We see the corpse of a True Dragon (the mountain), and not only is it nothing like the Lothric "dragons", the creatures that do look like Lothric dragons are specifically called Wyverns. The only times we see these drakes referred to as dragons is via human accounts, and those have always been fallible. The non-diagetic title of a boss is closer to true objectivity, so those two-legged "dragons" are wyverns/drakes, just as they always were in the other games. The Twinkling Dragon Stones even recount that this illusion emulating a fraction of the Ancient Dragons only further proved humankind's smallness. I find it kinda interesting how we never see any True Dragons breathe fire, or breathe at all for that matter. Of course dragons wouldn't breathe. Breath is life, and dragons aren't living. So the only "dragons" that would even be capable of breathing fire/lightning/crystal mist wouldn't be pure dragons, but mutants born from the disparity brought by fire. Kind of a half-finished thought, but there you go. I actually take back my first point about the Pus, but only because my ideas get weirder from here: Maybe the Pus is in fact turning into Dragons, but like, actual true Dragons? The Hollow Pus may be turning into the Lothric drakes we see, sure, but then why are those also sprouting Pus? Is that pus just going to turn into another drake? I say no. I say that pus is going to turn into a True Dragon. Maybe not right away, maybe a few more steps down the line. You know, once it's become pure. Not purified by fire, not pure dark, but by stagnation of both allowing the Dragon to saturate and cast both off. The way the Pus sprouts from the back of Gundyr and the Hollows (sweet band name), I cannot be the only person who sees the imagery of a cicada sprouting from the back of its previous shell. We see this image in the half bird man statues, perhaps not a man being consumed by a winged creature, but a winged creature emerging from the back of the man? If Humanity is the Shackle, and as you claim, Humanity is contained in the blood, would it not stand to reason that the living body, something inherently tied to the lifeblood that pumps through it, is itself the Shackle as well? What if Dragons are simply beings that have completely unshackled themselves? Unbound by flesh, blood, souls, fire, dark, life or death? In a sense, a True Dragon is a being that ascended to a "higher" plane of existence, which would make sense considering the clearly ascetic, spiritualist nature of the Dragon Shrine of Archdragon Peak, and the hedonistic, materialist nature of the Aldrich Faith. As such, the Pus of Man "ascends" by literally casting off its previous "shell", the human body, that shackled it. The black dripping creatures we see clearly aren't the true form of the ascending beings, the blackness may be the remaining human dregs draining off of it, being cast off as it becomes more pure. Perhaps once it becomes a drake, the pus builds up within it again, only for it to in turn become a larger wyvern or other creature, slowly becoming more like the Ancient Dragons, until there is no more impurities? Wow I'm sorry, I wrote waaaaaay more than I meant to! Ughh, hopefully the last DLC ties any of this stuff together finally..!
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
I don't really have anything add, other than it seems entirely possible. Whether shackles refers to the corrupt darkness shackling the gods and shackling the world. Or whether it's the limitations shackling humanity seems to be a very deliberate ambiguity by Miyazaki.
@adamjameskranz
@adamjameskranz 7 лет назад
That gluttony-asceticism sinking-flying axis puts things together in a nice way, especially with the idea that gluttony might prevent one from becoming a perfect dragon. The big question for me is still the Pilgrim Butterflies though. How do they fit in here? Are they pursuing a parallel path without access to the dragon stones and pose, that still reaches some kind of ascended dragon form without the dragon stuff? What does the woodiness indicate? What determines if a Lothric hollow ends up transforming towards a Pilgrim Butterfly or a pus of man?
@hunterm1113
@hunterm1113 7 лет назад
Glad you asked, because I'm back with More Weird Ideas! It's certainly ambiguous whether the shackles are things that shackle humans or gods, there are definitely multiple characters' interpretations. A common trend in Dark Souls is cultural/societal interpretations and beliefs (heck, you fight the incarnation of the collective cultural belief in the heroism of firelinking at the end) changing throughout history. So I can only offer my interpretation, haha! At this point, I think it's safe to say that humans/gods/giants are fundamentally similar creatures (maybe a neanderthal/homo sapiens relation, practically the same), and that linking the fire essentially destroys and rebuilds the world, which is something I'm not a fan of. Rambling a little bit, but what I mean is that, either way, the "shackling" idea is a social construct, maybe one started by gods and adopted by humans, just as firelinking was adopted into a human institution, despite being a system that specifically oppresses humans. So I'm not trying to apply a moral dynamic to "humanity breaking its limiting shackles", because it's more about that Shinto idea of purity, albeit flipped on its head, hahaha. As a transhumanist, I do personally see value in transcending human limitations, but I also see the horror in totally abandoning one's humanity and the material world. Side note, I think Dragons represent a kind of elemental factor separate from the Fire/Dark dichotomy. Dragons are Mineral. They're made of (or at least covered in) stone, they're inert, unliving, and what's the manifestation of their immortality we see in-game (or an approximation, at least)? The Primordial Crystal. Crystals are saturated minerals that form amidst sedimentary bedrock! And where have we heard those words? Describing Human Dregs, the bits of Dark sediment that form the "glorious bedrock of this world"! As I was saying, the stagnation of whatever fluid the Pus is (blood, a deeply human-tied thing?) allows the saturation of whatever makes up "Dragon" within the body. Dragons aren't themselves made of Dark, but it's only the stagnation allowed by the absence of Fire that they can form in. A pure stagnation, rather than a pure flow. Okay, so wood. This one I'm less certain of, but I have some really strong Big Ideas that need more connecting fibers. Candidate states that wood seems tied to the Abyss/Humanity in general, and this makes sense. After all, Humanity is used just like wood to stoke fires in Dark Souls. Not only that, but physical bodies take on wood-like properties the more inert they become, Giants clearly have bark-like skin, humans are turning into trees, and yes even gods become wood-like, such as the Bed of Chaos, whose body seemed to separate into a fiery soul, a chaos bug, and... a hollow shell left behind that became a tree! So here's what it is. What you'll begin to notice about the tree Hollows is that they aren't just "Hollow", they're hollow. They're empty! The tree Hollows are empty, discarded shells, whose pus has already emerged (so, to answer that question, they basically become both!). The body becomes wood-like when the Pus leaves it, just like the Bed of Chaos when the Witch emerged as the Chaos Bug. And this makes perfect sense if we consider the state of the world in the Age of Ancients. There were Dragons, and there were Archtrees. Dragons being pure, ascended forms of the Pus, and Archtrees being the fully grown remains of their shackles. "Shackles of the World", remember. And what is the "world" of Dark Souls sitting atop? Archtrees! Not every human body in the world became a Dragon of course. Some of them never saturated enough "dragon" to ever ascend, most of them even, and those bodies simply fell still, littering the ground beneath the roots of the Archtrees (wow Dark Souls really is Norse mythology, haha), until we see them in the intro of DS1 seeing Fire return. As for the Pilgrims..? Ughhhh, I still have almost nothing on them! We know almost nothing about what Kaathe is planning, what exactly the teachings of the Sable Church are, or where the Third Sister is. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that if Kaathe is still alive, he's trying to become a perfect Dragon, rather than an imperfect Serpent. I think the Primordial Serpents are very closely related to Humans, DS1 even states that serpents are "a symbol of the Undead". Hell, maybe the Primordial Serpents are a stage of Pus that's aaaaalmost a dragon? As for the Pilgrims themselves, they certainly don't seem to have much hope of their own, being taught to see no value in themselves, other than the obvious Pus they carry on their backs. Yeah, I need the next DLC before I can really say anything solid about them.

Another thing. In the games we hear about archtrees and spirit trees. The later are seemingly benevolent beings (one turned into a shield to protect a boy and one accepted the curses of the undead settlement). Meanwhile serpents (imperfect dragons) are said to be filled with desire and thirsty for power. The ancient dragons had stone scales which contained great power. No one knows the true nature of titanite but it also contains power (slabs are probably as powerful as a dragon scale). Demon Titanite were created when the "blacksmith deity" died and were originally common titanite slabs. If there´s a connection between Titanite and dragons (therefore connections with the dark) it could be that Titanite demons were brought to life when the blacksmith deity tried to create "perfect weapons". The desire was so great that he "awakened" an instinct imprinted in the slabs, thus creating the demons. So what if Titanite, dragons and archtrees are actually the same thing,just in different phases? Titanite would be the raw power without thought. Archtrees and spirit trees would be beings with thoughts but moderate wills. Dragons and serpents would be sentient beings filled to the brim with desire.
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. The undead settlement is clearly trying to make a new spirit tree to protect itself, which is why there are all those corpses with saplings stuffed in their necks. The titanite stuff I'm less sure of. There is definitely something to it being related to dragons, and it is very specifically dropped by the Pus of Man and the Lothric wyverns. But I can't reconcile it being transformed undead or some other aspect of the ancient world with it very specifically being either slabs with stuff written on it or broken off parts of the those slabs. Although, then again, why would crystal lizards drop those things in the first place. It's not like they would have picked it up, they'd have to be growing in them.

@takezokimura2571

Candidate Titanite scale´s description says that the lizards grow to that size when they consume souls, it could be that they consumed fragments of the dark soul. It could be that the lizards themselves were simply titanite stones in the process of transformation. After all, snakes and lizards are reptiles. Crystals are also associated with Seath and his crystals are said to sap the owner´s will (sounds like hollowing...)

I know this is late. Only recently found the channel and I'm really enjoying this content so far. However here are a few things that I realized whilst in my play through and in watching your video. I'm beginning to believe that the puss of man, although not actually becoming a dragon, may be birthing the dragons themselves. As noticed, the puss of man has similar draconian features yes, however take note that the dragons in the lotheric castle are directly connected to a puss of man itself, like they are being born. The dragons seem to be coming out of the puss of man, as if in the earlier versions of the enemy we see with the scaly white spines are merely growing the dragons inside of them. Perhaps we could even go so far as to say they consume the undead to form the dragons. We already know that the mad king did experiments on people turning them into dragons, or attempting to anyway. As to why we see so many of them in his garden just before him.

Very interesting theory. I never thought that the cycle might encompass even more than the linking of the fire. The question still remains whether the usurper of fire ending or the end of fire ending (or maybe both) would lead to the grey primordial world or to a new, dark age. If one of those leads to a grey world, as it was before the age of fire, then the cycle is not broken after all.

I think that's more just referring to the worship of the Nameless King and knights following the Path of the Dragon (you actually see a Lothric Knight on the edge of the cliff you use to reach Archdragon peak) . This makes a lot of sense, and what makes even more sense is the fact that there was a weather pattern discovered a few years after this where there is a bunch of serpent-like dragons are flying around. Could be safe to say that those dragons were once men and since this age is so close to becoming like the ancient ways of ash and trees, that by the end of the Ringed City DLC there could have been a bunch of dragons? Imagine fighting Gael in a barren wasteland of ash with a bunch of those dragons flying around. We also know of the wretches, failed experiments that were once to be dragons, but failed due to humanity. They have the 'wings' and are kind of like Oceiros in looks.

This is great work--ties together a lot of ideas that seem disparate at first and makes a compelling case for their relationship. There are a couple pieces of relevant or supporting evidence you haven't mentioned (maybe for good reason, but regardless). Sorry there's a lot but hopefully it's interesting/helpful. First, the petrified Ghru in front of the Izalith pyromancy tome seems to be farther along the Ghru transformation? And it has fungal-looking growths that resemble the protrusions we see on Oceiros, which maybe supports the idea that they're following a similar human-->dragon transformation as he did. Then there's the whole 'insatiable hunger' angle on the Deep in particular, which arguably encompasses Aldritch's gluttony and the blood-hunger of Ariandel and the maggots (I always took them for leeches, but there are maggots that feed on blood so it's maybe immaterial), but also the Sulyvahn's beasts, which seem to be suffering the same condition as the Gaping Dragon. The Gaping Dragon link seems important to me, because The Depths have a lot of resonance with The Deep. Aside from the gaping anatomy and the name, there's the pervasive hunger motif, emphasizing cannibalism in particular: Mildred in DS3 seems to be scavenging from Aldritch's meat supply line (It may also be of interest to you that in DS1 Maneater Mildred wears the Rusted Iron Ring, which is described as an "iron ring used to shackle the guilty."). There's also accumulation of stagnant wastewater, congealing into hungry and bloody flesh jellies, and the whole bloodsucking creature motif. It also seems not coincidental that Irina is attached to a very Depths-esque sewer when she's stricken by the gnawing. It's maybe not obvious that this whole deal is connected to humanity, but then I came across the Firekeeper soul descriptions from DS1: "Each Fire Keeper is a corporeal manifestation of her bonfire, and a draw for the humanity which is offered to her. Her soul is gnawed by infinite humanity" The word "gnaw" there suggests that the stuff in the firekeeper souls is basically the shit the Evangelists use for their Deep offensive spells. Other versions of the item read: "A Fire Keeper's soul is a draw for humanity, and held within their bosoms, below just a thin layer of skin, are swarms of humanity that writhe and squirm." And the Fair Lady's adds: "To her, the countless eggs which appeared were cradles for each tiny humanity." The thing that sickened the Fair Lady and possibly blighted all of Blighttown is called "blightpus," and the ailment she gets from containing that (which is distinct from the other firekeepers' gnawing, seemingly?) is ameliorated by fresh humanity. That seems to support your idea that "pus" represents stagnant humanity? I wondered why you didn't bring up the Covetous rings again here. Their link between gluttony and shackles seems to fit in really well with this Deep/Pus of Man/dragon transformation story you're telling here. Not sure exactly how, though. DS1 links them to both gluttony and the Undead. it seems like they're implying gluttony is the thing that makes them "imperfect dragons" and linking this to the fundamental nature of the Undead and the "shackles" maybe implies that the dark sigils are causing hunger/gluttony through that bottomless pit?
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
You're absolutely correct. The symbolism of lust, of desire, of Want corrupting you and corrupting humanity is extremely strong throughout the series - some of the examples you didn't mention being Mytha and the Covetous Demon, both transformed by their unrequited love, Nashandra who's called the Prisoner of Want as well as Pursuers seeking out the object of envy/love. I will get around to doing a video about that, since it's very relevant to both the Firekeepers and the Children of Manus.
@adamjameskranz

I thought of bringing up the Covetous Demon but there doesn't seem to be any solid evidence it's related to the Humanity/Deep thing or if that's just a parallel example of strong desires imposing physical transformation. But I didn't even think of Nashandra, which is the obvious one from DS2. Tying that thread in starts to get into Dark Souls 2 lore I can never seem to permanently wrap my head around, so I'm looking forward to your explanation. Are you planning to touch on the possible Old Chaos-Alsanna-Profaned Flame-Irithyll link in the context of the Children of Manus? Do you buy that hypothesis?

That's an interesting way to look at it. It kinda makes sense seeing as Dark Souls lore goes through cycles, and seeing as the flame is fading, it would make sense that the world is somewhat recycling to the start, albeit in a different fashion.

That was an epic conclusion man, actually I really see the connection of the facts that you had mentioned in the videos. Undead turning into dragon is not consistent with the lore of the ring city dlc. I feel like dark soul lore is just a vague narrative made of a lot of inconsistent things. One is not supposed to think to hard about the lore because it doesn't really make sense if you think too hard. Just have a vague and grand feeling about the world and have fun with it.

You've got a loose thread through all of this, but it's not impossible and fairly valid, but I do need to correct you; Father Ariandel was using his blood to satiate the flame, not create it.
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
He was using his blood to subsume the flame, causing it not to burn. That changes when phase two begins - he bangs the vessel down on the floor until the flame starts to flare up again. The remaining fluid in the bowl seems to be the flame "stuck" on what's left of his blood, and he blows on it to create a breath attack, like the Follower's torch and the dragons. That's what I referring to, the attack, not the fire itself.

In the midst of this I had a thought, a little off topic though. It is about Ornstein, what if Ornstein in Anor Londo was just a Dragonslayer named Ornstein and Dragonslayer is just a title of a sect of knights in stead of it just being a unique title. And the Dragonslayer we all fell in love with didn't have a name just like the Nameless King. That is why in Dark Souls 2 he is called the Old Dragonslayer instead of being called the Old Dragonslayer Ornstein. Makes a little sense right? It still adds into your theory of how he was able to turn into a dragon and the Nameless King wasn't.
@kylemcmurray806

Maybe the reason we hear Havel's name more too was because he was left behind while the Nameless King left and the Dragonslayer sought him out after his departure. Havel left his physical body there while the other two only left tales and legends

Time doesn't cycle in Dark Souls. It moves forward. The First Flame is very explicitly literally the first true fire to ever exist. The Age if Dark is described as Dark, while the Age of Ancients isn't, because disparity still exists in the Age of Dark. It has to, otherwise it couldn't be dark. The only cycle is the cycle of Linking the Fire, a thing which is quite explicitly unnatural and bad. The world isn't meant to return to where it was before, it's meant to continue onwards ever changing, each age replaced in turn with a new, different age, always building on the last. Stagnation is bad, that's the problem with Linking the Fire, and cyclic time is just stagnation on a larger scale. Not to mention the Everlasting Dragons predate life. They're only half-living and they're made of rocks. Humanity is made of darkness and ultimately a dark flame, which is not rocks. Also, it's only the Painted World of Ash that's painted with the Blood of the Dark Soul, the other Painted Worlds were made with something else.

I am impressed with this level of analysis. Just a thought but, what if serpents, on a fundamental level, are a transitory stage between human and dragon? Serpents are regarded as "impure dragons" and serpent-men are seen, firstly, in the Duke's Archives in the service of a deformed dragon that possessed deformities that resemble serpentine appendages. Furthermore, they are encountered at Archdragon Peak, a place dedicated to humans attempting to deliberately take on the form of dragons. That being said, I suspect that serpent-men are failures in the Path of the Dragon. To take it a step further, the Primordial Serpents possess bizarrely human-like characteristics, looking at their noses and lack of a snout. They have a propensity towards Dark, which is the supposed origin of man and now, possibly, the means by which the world transitions back to a primordial state of existence. Humans, due to a mutual tendency towards avarice, are even frequently compared to serpents, which serve as the symbol of the Undead. All theory and speculation but I'd be curious about any contribution.
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 7 лет назад
The silver serpent ring talks about how it shows a Serpent "could have been, but never was a dragon" which implies that they're people that have failed to become dragons. So maybe they're an intermediate stage that's become frozen partway. As for the Serpent-men, the archdragon shield actually tells us they're the descendants of the arch-dragons, not failed acolytes. You're definitely right about the undead/avarice/serpent/imperfect dragon connection though, and it really goes to show Miyazaki has been thinking about this stuff since the first game. Logan even calls Seath a "true undead."
@joeschmo3622
@joeschmo3622 7 лет назад
I had forgotten about that detail, thank you for correcting me. Well, I guess our best information on the Primordial Serpents is still that vague line from the Watchdragon Parma: "The black and white contrast depicts the ebb and flow of the fate of all things living, and the serpentine dragons that watch over the march of time."

The idea of transformation also fits well with Bloodborne (also remember the soul is in the blood). It’s fairly well known at this point that Bloodborne was meant as an explicit “sequel” to the Bloodborne series, taking place hundreds or thousands of years later, with the city of Yarnham literally having been built atop the ruins of Darksouls locations. That appears to be the true nature of the labyrinth/chalice dungeons in Bloodborne, and why so many of the enemies down there are of a decidedly fantasy/medieval aspect in contrast to the Nosferatu and Lycanthropes on the surface. Just an interesting thought, how well this theory connects to the themes present in Bloodborne.

Wow. You went deep. Definitely not just by chance that From created the similarities that you mention. The Ghru/Storm Drake theory is brilliant. They actually do look alike, and I had never noticed that before. Cycles upon cycles within cycles. I've always believed that nothing you do in any Dark Souls game matters. It only affects the time it takes to reach the next stage. Time is irrelevant if something is going to happen anyway, especially in the grand scheme of things. No matter what ending or choices you've made as the chosen undead/unkindled, all of it will come to pass eventually. Bravo. Definitely deserve more subs, keep the videos up as long as you enjoy making them, and I'll always lend a view and a like.

This is some great content and it closely mirrors my own observations! It is most interesting to note the very curious connection between the Dark and fire, specifically Pyromancy. Pyromancy seems to be entirely human art and it very much seems that the closer one is to their humanity, the more powerful it becomes. Pyromancers wear garb over their eyes, not unlike those worn by the Ringed Knights, in order to look inward. But what lurks inward? Humanity of course. And at the very apex of Pyromancy, what lies? Dark Pyromancies- black, shadowless flame that deals dark damage instead of fire.

I'm not sure about the first of the Scholars being Aldia. I think it was Sulyvahn, but it's possible that Sulyvahn is a reincarnation of Aldia, or something similar. I heavily agree that the Age of Ancients (Age of Gray) is the natural state of the world, and it wants to go back, but linking the fire keeps it at bay. I have some theories about the world itself, and characters who are trying to get it back on track: 1) the First Flame itself did not start the cycle of the world, it only created disparity (life, death, light, dark) and is irreversible 2) just as a side note, humans, gods, and (maybe) giants are all the same species, and their size and power just depends on their souls. We know this from the very beginning of the intro, we see hollows coming from the dark, and then claiming the lord souls from the First Flame. Giants could be argued to be something else, maybe they are actually trees? 3) taking souls from the First Flame was the First Sin, and the lords created imbalance first by stealing power from the First Flame, but then by working together against the dark thereby creating the Age of Fire. 4) The First Flame was eternal, but is now dying because the lords took power from it and it needs a replacement, otherwise the world will just be dark and just as imbalanced. 5) The Profaned Flame is an eternal flame, which exists outside the cycle. As Andre states when you bring him the Profaned Coal, the flame manages to also contain the Abyss within it. It is an eternal flame with light and dark forces inside, and (presumably) creates both life and death by extension. Sound familiar? 6) well what about the humanity and stolen souls of this age, what happens to them if the First Flame is replaced? What if they were all consumed by a single entity and then put to rest so that there can be balance for the new world? Enter Aldrich, who is trying to consume the souls of every living thing. I believe this is what the Cathedral of the Deep is attempting to do, by feeding him. 7) This goal is evidenced by Sulyvahn's two swords: one represents the Profaned Flame (obviously) and the other has "dark blue hues, *deeper* than the darkest moon" people often miss this because the think it just refers the the Darkmoon sorceries, but it's stating that it's darker than the Darkmoon, and is actually refering to the Deep. So Sulyvahn is leading this effort by feeding the gods to Aldrich, and would presumably be eaten too, eventually. 8) Once Aldrich consumes all of the souls from the First Flame, only hollows and dragons will remain in a gray ashen landscape with dark waters, and an eternal flame. Sounds like a new Age of Gray to me. My only question now is how do the player's actions, and the endings mess with this plan to renew the world? I think the Hollow Lord ending might be the same because we actually destroy the First Flame, and then lead the hollows into a gray (notice the darksign in the sky is now white/gray, and that it is not dark outside like the Dark ending of DS1 or the End of Fire Ending) and ashen world, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts or theories on any of this?

What I said, as soon as I saw the first pus of man in the preview version of the game before it was released was, "Those are cancer dragons." It always seemed obvious to me that, with the end of this world quickly approaching, dragons are being reborn into the world to begin the cycle anew.

In a way, it's perhaps like Humanities are connected to each other in some other plane, and the remnants of dragons souls after the beginning of the Age of Fire are leaking out of this plane at the points that these humanities lie in the physical plane - as in hollows' souls - and that's what 'human dregs' are.

yeah, gwyverns and drakes are incomplete ancient dragons. I think the order goes like this. Drakes(which have the most humnity and shoot lightning), Drakes(which are white and shoot fire), and (after all the humanity dries, you get _) Ancient Dragons. Ps. I dont think the "Ancient" Dragon in DS1 is an "Ancient Dragon". I think he an undead which is getting close to the level of an ancient dragon but he really isn't one yet. 1. He has never been called an "ancient" dragon, he has been called an "Everlasting" Dragon, which has a completely different definition. 2. The prolog clearly says and "(ancient) dragons were no more." thus began the age of fire, and as far as we the prolog and item descriptions dont lie. 3. He collects dragon scales, implying he needs them to become more dragon-like. 4. cut content shows him doing something similar to the "path of the dragon" gesture. And we know their goal is to become stone ancient dragons. (im having troubles finding it, if i do ill pass it on, take it with a grain of salt) 5. one of its horns isnt straight (unlike the pic of an acual acient dragon), impling its 'developing', he is close but he is not yet an ancient dragon. 6. he gives us the dragon stones, which perhaps initialized his road towards dragonhood. Everlasting dragon: darksouls.wdfiles.com/local--files/npcs/everlasting-dragon.jpg Ancient Dragon: vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/non-aliencreatures/images/1/1c/DragonDarkSouls.png/revision/latest?cb=20141127021026
@candidate8144

The Everlasting/Ancient Dragon thing is something where the translation definitely screws up our perception a little - there's basically only two types of dragons - the "flying wing dragons" - which were the drakes in Dark Souls , as well as the Lothric dragons. You also have the "ancient dragons" under which the Archdrakes, Everlasting and Archdragon all fall. Whether or not the Ancient dragon in Dark Souls 1 was actually around during the Age of Ancients is up to debate (and has been since Dark Souls 1) . It's definitely similar to everyone calling the Ancient Dragon a fake in Dark Souls 2.

Humans' Dark Souls stagnating and forming dragons and trees also, so both dragons and arch trees were formed by stagnating humanity However in the end of Dark Souls III instead of trees and dragons all we have is Ash It seems Gwyn's Link of Fire was meant to break a far higher and greater cycle or alternatively counteract the cycle of Dragons/trees forming from stagnating humanity over and over by creating a cycle of the age of fire that cancelled it out leaving only Ash

How do the wretches Irithyll dungeon relate to this? They drop the tailbone daggers+spear, which have obviously dragon related weapon arts. They seem to be half-formed creatures with humanoid facial features. Is it possible that they are failed conversions into dragons in the same way that pus of man are, but were confined to Irithyll dungeon? What is interesting is that while the pus of man are some of the most aggressive creatures in the game, the wretches (with one in particular) are relatively docile, at least until you attack them.

The best that I can determine is how they are referred as "failed" and "unworthy" prisoners (Tailbone Spear). Based upon that, I do agree that they are failed conversions into dragons but the reasoning is obscure. As far as I can tell, only the most distinguished of Lothric knights were allowed the opportunity to become dragons (Thunder Stoneplate Ring) and it would seem that Sulyvahn, for whatever reason, was trying to facilitate this process within his own prisoners for his own purposes, whatever those may be.

There's one big question that kept gnawing at me through this video: You keep referring to these instances of humanity as "impure" or "defiled" or "tainted." But what *is* it that makes the humanity impure? To be impure means to be *mixed* with something else in a way that *contaminates.* So...what is it that mixes with and contaminates the dark/humanity, making it impure?
@candidate8144
@candidate8144 5 лет назад
It's not really tainted or impure in the sense that something's become mixed with it, it's more of a spiritual taboo that has physical effects. Think of it like saying something's cursed, or maybe non-Kosher or Haram.

as many are saying here, great and underrated video. If I can I'd like to add a few more tidbits: I really wish I could remember the video that illuminated this, but I've heard it suggested before that Ghru have likely made a pact with the remaining demons of the world, and became demons themselves. This is likely due to the seeping swamp of Farron, which was warping the remaining Legion members (worth noting the Cathedral is situated right above Farron, the lands converging probably caused the swamp through leaking human dregs). My guess is they needed the help of demons either to survive the swamp, or to bolster the strength of those few who already had survived. Evidence for this is their chimeric nature (demons have always been painted as an unnatural amalgamation of various creatures, see the Guardian Soul descrip. from DS1) as well as the cindered Ghru found in the demon ruins. How they managed to travel safely past the Abyss Watchers and Catacombs, I'm not sure, but the fact is they're there as well as Farron. Speaking of the Sanctuary Guardian, he's strongly implied to be a demon, or something very similar. He's noticeably more beautiful to look at than most demons, and is another creature that breathes lightning - this could suggest it was created, or blessed in some way, by the gods, perhaps their own attempt at demonkind after Izalith was beaten into submission. Back to the Ghru and their similarities to dragons, it's worth noting that dragons have most certainly been used, or at least attempted to have been used, in the creation of demons before. Look at the Bounding Demons of Izalith, which are called "Those Which Failed to Become" in JP. Less concrete supporting evidence is the Demon Spear from Ds1, which is explicity said to be made from the bones of demons, yet strongly resembles the spiked and segmented exteriors of the drakes in that game. The Ghru could have accepted a bolstering in the form of blood from those strange dragons that have rearisen, in addition to the already-dried Wolf's Blood, plus god only knows what else the demons and blight granted them (obviously goat influence came about somewhere along the way). Last thing I want to point out is the Cathedral Maggot creatures. For one, in the final progression, I think you can see the remainder of the original body in a crumpled heap clinging to the creature's "tail." I also really think these maggots had something to do with Aldritch and his consumption of Undead. I figure either the maggots came into being due to the abundance of discarded, mostly-consumed corpses combined with the Cathedral's swirling corruption. Or, an explanation I like better, they were being intentionally used to drain sacrifices dry, so that Aldritch could more efficiently devour them - being as they were Undead, they likely writhed and churned within him after consumption, and so needed to be properly prepared - drained of most of their blood and soul - in order to sit better within Aldritch. It's worth noting the Grub men of Rosaria also inflict the maggot status, as does the lone "pregnant"-looking dog in Road of Sacrifices. The dog probably just became infected by eating corpses nearby, but the Maggot Men utilizing the same blood draining maggots could mean that Rosaria serves Aldritch now. The Cathedral clearly used to be dedicated to her, evidenced by the multitude of statues of a crying woman which have largely been covered up, especially within her own chamber. And while it's possible the grubs still defend her to this day from the Deep, I think it's more likely that her chamber bars were long ago pried open to reach the last hold of a besieged goddess, once the rest of the Cathedral had fallen. Likely by the giant nearby. My guess is the goddess there was then corrupted into Rosaria, and used to mother the maggots needed for Aldritch's endless meals. Thank you again for the wonderful video, tons of really hawkeyed analysis, you established some pretty clear links between elements I would have thought were completely unrelated.

The problem is that when you compare it to Fraampt or Kaathe's model, it looks way more human. darksouls.wdfiles.com/local--files/npcs/kingseeker-frampt-large.jpg fextralife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/dark-souls-3-statues-2.jpg Aside from Fraampt's head being far too big to fit on someone's torso, you have the face being way more flat than Frampt's - both of it's eyes face forward, rather than Frampt's facing in opposite directions.

Yeah, but I did say that they were people turning into primordial serpents, not that they have nothing to do with them. That explains the moustache.

What is it with Australians and dark souls lore?

While I don't disagree with the whole "impure humanity" theory, this theory is nonetheless very good, fun, interesting and coherent. So far, I've only found two more DS-theorists that don't project their own waifu into their theories, so it comes really refreshing to me. You know the daughters of the abyss from DS2? I want to know why they haven't been turned into horned monsters (especially Elana, Alasanna and Nadalia - they hollowed a bit or not even ) while their father was grotesque. Also, why didn't Gael turn into a "dragon"? With that said subscribed, upvoted.
