Nice video, though to be honest some of those 'references' are just common things. Hydras are a thing you see in A LOT of media, the "goat demon" is a pretty standard depiction of a demon. The minotaur might be a reference due to the similarity in size, but it's a stretch. You did point out many definite references though. Great job.

Fun fact, the painted world was the first level created for dark souls and was originally going to have nito as a boss in the center. Not surprising considering such a distinct design as the bone wheel skeletons are in it.

Demons Souls also has a shitload of Berserk influence.

Look, this is as close as were getting to a good Berserk game for now (the Souls series and Dragon's Dogma) so at least be happy because goddamnit Berserk is so awesome.

As someone said: DarkSouls is the perfect adaptation of Berserk.

Also in Dark souls 3 there's a giant dog-like monstrosity on the bridge leading to Irythill that is identical in appearance to the Berserk hell hounds. Fantastic inspiration!

There's apparently a child version of the witch Beatrice left in the games data.

For people claiming "sue and copyrights", the creators themselves said it was an hommage to some of Berserk theme, that's what makes Dark Souls so awesome.

Also, the Eclipse event in Dark Souls is wonderfully nostalgic of the Eclipse invocation when the Godhand first appear in the Manga. Good video. People are splitting hairs about this for some reason, even though the devs have very openly and proudly incorporated a lot of Berserk imagery and lore into their games.

It's not only about resemblance betwen the Behelits (Egg of the king is one of them) and the orbs used to invade another worlds. The Behelit is told in the manga to be a portal to the world of the god's hand (5 "angels", let's say), it can be activated through pain, death, suffering, despair, agony, etc, and once the owner (chosen by fate) of the behelit sumons the hand of god, he needs to propose a true sacrifice of blood (people important to him most of the time) to "reborn" and return with a reward (return as a apostole). Gwyndolin is based on the Australian Deity Wandjina. Snakes for feet, Androgyny and a head that looks like the sun.

Nice video Gidrah, and i'd put a few things about the references of Berserk in Dark Souls: the two handed move set of the claymore that is similar to the Gatts swordplay; the move set of the Abyss Greatsword that is similar to the Gatts BerserkMode swordplay; and the Abyss in New Londo, being almost equal to the abyss in the dephts of the tower that Griffith was locked :3

Schierke is adorable, i didnt know there was a reference to her. Artorias being Guts was obvious with that scene and the lore!

Some of these are pretty common fantasy themes, but others are just unmistakable.

what was the weapon in the second to last picture? i dont remember that in dark souls, but theres one like it in 2. did i somehow miss it? i feel like i played way too much to have missed it

I've noticed a couple while reading through Berserk myself (also, quick warning, this post does contain spoilers for Berserk). Starting with Demon's Souls: There is a character in Berserk named Locus, who's nickname is the "Moonlight Knight", which was probably inspiration for Moonlight Knight Bito's title. Another character, Grunbeld, is a "Giant" from a "northern country". Sound familiar? During the Eclipse, a giant cyclone/tornado is revealed to have enshrouded the characters as the Godhand appear. After Griffith agrees to sacrifice his allies to become a member of the Godhand, they are killed by Apostles (which are essentially demons) within the cyclone/tornado, save for the protagonist, Guts, and the main heroine, Casca, who manage to barely escape with their lives. It is possible this inspired the "colorless fog" that covered Boletaria and likewise turned anything within it into a hotbed of demon activity. Of note as well, is that after Griffith becomes Femto of the Godhand, the story refers to an "Age of Darkness" that shall befall the planet. Possibly inspiration for the similarly named age given by the Primordial Serpents in Dark Souls should you choose to not link the flame after killing Gwyn. Probably not, but still an interesting connection. This one may be a stretch, but I find it rather interesting. In Berserk, there is a character known as "Mozgus", who is a Bishop. Though initially human, he is later stabbed by the Egg-shaped Apostle and turned into an "Apostle spawn". In his Apostle spawn form, he has a near impenetrable body of stone, save for his insides. Like I said, this is a bit of a stretch, but Bishop Mozgus may in fact have inspired Havel of Rock, who wears a similarly sturdy stone-like set of armor literally chiseled from a boulder, and is also described as a Bishop in item descriptions.

Damn I wanted to get into Dark Souls cuz I heard of the Berserk inspirations and that’s my favorite manga, this vid just convinced me to join the Dark Souls community...🙂 RIP MIURA🗡

I just finished dark souls 1 for the first time, and I had no idea Berzerk inspired it all. It blows my mind how much inspiration it draws. Thinking about reading the manga now.

As a fan of both series, that read/played both recently, I must say I missed a lot of those during my playthrough (had read berserk prior to playing DS). This was beyond awesome :->

I feel like what this video misses is that Beserk didn't come up with these character designs out of nowhere. Both mediums are drawing from medieval/dark ages myth and lore. Things like the portrayal of demons as goats, the design/outfit of archers, and the archetype of buff blacksmiths go back thousands of years to the earliest narratives. This would be like saying God of War was inspired by Percy Jackson because all the gods are similar, without realising the existence of Greek Mythology.

Went to the bookstore yesterday and got my first deluxe edition volume, I’m going back today for the next one😂

The Catarina Armor was actually originally kind of a test concept. If I remember correctly, Miyazaki asked one of the artists to draw something just from their imagination and that's what they came up with and Miyazaki liked it so much that it ended up being put into the game.

1:25 Dragons have existed in literature for millennia, same with hydra at 1:47 so this is a serious stretch. 2:08 and 2:50 Hardly look similar to each other either. As much as I love Berserk, sometimes I feel the fanbase stretches to make anything that bears any kind of similarity to anything in the Berserk series a direct reference/ripoff.

Berserk and dark souls. My two loves

Wow. There are quite a few that look very close to each other. That said, I feel like some aren't good enough to be references. Some of these are common tropes in western fantasy literature, which if I'm not mistaken, was something very instrumental in the game. While the souls games are Japanese, they don't look or feel like many traditional Japanese fantasy RPGs. I am amazed at some of the similarities though it has towards a traditional western RPG. I liked the video a lot. The souls community is one of the best.

i'm an old dullard who loves his souls series, never heard of this Berserk before, but now that I have, I am curious to give it a read.

Man I remember when I saw the original berserk.. The first episode was like WTF? Then I kept watching to realize the first episode was the last. What an epic yet gruesome story.

Holy shit, dude. I had it like a worm in the back of my skull. This feels so familiar... I've been reading Berserk since the 90's. This totally clicked in to place.

Miyazaki, and the team in general do make quite a lot of allusions to Berserk, but there are some in this video that seem like a bit of a miss to me. Beatrice - A bit too generic for me to be able to see it completely, but given how influential the series is, I'd buy it. Balder Knight stance - You lost me. Seems more just like a generic fencing stance to me. Great bow player - I can see it in the hat, but I think the leather armor set is a much better match. Taurus Demon - Probably more based generally on minotaurs than on Zodd specifically, but I could be wrong. Hellkite Drake - Seems like a bit of a stretch, what with dragons being very commonplace fixtures in fantasy, in the first place. Capra Demon - Sure probably. Depends on Miyazaki's familiarity with Baphomet and depictions of Satan, in general. Hydra - Again, probably more based on mythological hydras than the one from the Berserk scan. Snake warriors - Nope. It's been stated actually that those are a reference to King's Field, actually. Pinwheel - Actually kind of a joke boss design. Its Japanese name is "Sannin haori" which roughly translates to "three-person coat." It's a reference to a Japanese festival game in two people are in a coat. One person is the eyes, and the other is hand, and the object of the game is for the person who is acting as the hand to get food into the other person's mouth. That said, many of the ones you listed are pretty spot-on, and I could indeed be wrong about some of the ones I question (if some of them have been explicitly mentioned in interviews). A couple I think are also worth noting, though. The Greatsword - More or less a dead ringer for Guts' Golden Age sword. Gwyn - Arguable, like some of the ones I mentioned above I suppose, but I would be surprised if it was mere coincidence that Lord Gwyn and the King of Midland (after Griffith's imprisonment) look so much alike.

Thanks to dark Souls i started to read the mangá and watch the animes... i'm deeply thankful for that because berserk is the greatest thing i've ever read, since the Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire.
