DARKTHRONE - Old Star Album Review | Overkill Reviews 

Darkthrone have never disappointed me and I think this album is one of their best. Blackened doom with a Celtic Frost vibe. It’s funny to me how some fans complain about newer Darkthrone albums not being “black metal enough”. Gotta remember how first wave black metal was everything from Venom to Mercyful Fate. Dare I say... VARIETY!

This album is so good.

Besides the music of DARKTHRONE, I also like the fact that they are true Metal! Fenriz is a veteran of the underground scene and has introduced many fans out there to great underground bands such as SADISTIC INTENT, EM RUINAS, NEKROMANTHEON, etc.. Can't wait to get my new Darkthrone album!!!!

The main riff of The Hardships Of Scots is the exact same riff from AC/DC’s Let Me Put My Love Into You. The difference in this situation is that after the open E string, they paw muted it 3 strokes and then after hitting the A chord they play the chord 3 times. By doing that they give it a much heavier sound by still keeping that blues riff intact.

6:24 definitely put on Transilvanian Hunger while hungover and what a mistake that was...

This album is so damn good, simple riffs but so effective!

This record is kinda full of riff salad, but the riffs are fucking awesome so it works out.

Nice review! Really digging it myself. Duke of Gloat, Old Star and Hardship of the Scots my fav tracks.

I honestly think this is in my top 5 for Darkthrone. It definitely piqued my attention several times. I've already said this, but I'll say it again, the back half of the album is the strong half for me. I was super stoked for a new record when I liked Hardship of the Scots as much as I did, but that ended up being my least favorite. (not that I don't love it, it's a fuckin banger for sure). But yeah, fuckin loved this record. So stoked when bands I love put out new music I love. Especially when those bands members seem like rad dudes.

Darkthrone is one of the bands that evolves and transforms into new things every album or so. Old Star is quite different from everyone’s original favorite Darkthrone album... The day “The Hardship of the Scots” came out on RU-vid I knew I had to learn it. Upon learning, I decided to transcribe tabs for it. I made a cover with tabs in the video and available for download in the description on my channel. Hahaha ok enough self promo. This whole album is sick. Doomthrone!

Darkthrone is one of those bands where you have albums of theirs that you really enjoy, and a few that you're not so crazy about. I really enjoy this one. The riffs and guitar tones are just so cool.

Great album, great review, but lets cut to the real heart of the matter: that Hooded Menace hat is *badass*.

Blayne was spot on with this review. I got my copy a day early too, and while it's definitely not their best work, it's probably my favorite from them in recent years. It makes good background noise, but when you pay attention to it, it's a joy to listen to. It's got a little bit of black metal, a bit of doom, heavy metal...basically everything great about Darkthrone.

It's no underground resistance, but still a highly enjoyable LP.

Always cool to see some love for Circle the Wagons. One of my fave DT-albums. Like Arctic Thunder, this one's been a bit of slow-digested album for me. When I first heard Hardship of the Scots, my reaction was more or less *meh, it was okay.* The more I listen to it however, the more I enjoy it. This is in sharp contrast to The Underground Resistance (and indeed Circle the Wagons,) which were complete home-runs from the first damn second I listened to them (TUGR is actually probably my favourite album from them nowadays full stop.) Just to clarify, a slowly digested album doesn't mean that it's somehow inferior. Blasphemy's Fallen Angel of Doom and Mayhem's De Mysteriis dom Sathanas both took a while for me to 'get', and they're among my most beloved albums.

Blayne the word for sad and funny at the same time is "tragicomic."

I say this EVERYTIME Blayne does the review, but fuckin' hell, do I love me some Blayne! By far my favourite reviewer of anything Metal, on BANGERTV or otherwise. Not only are you funny Mr. Smith, you paint such vivid images with your descriptions, so I really get a feel for the album being reviewed, even if I haven't heard it in full yet. The part about 'sanguine' and 'melancholic' being words you learned from Space Marines killed me!

This is an awesome example of how to produce a good sounding metal album that still sounds raw and old school. Easily the best sounding Darkthrone album ever.

Darkthrone has 18 albums. Blayne puts this one in the middle (let’s say #9). Even if you’re a black metal hating tightwad, you have to admit that darkthrone has 5 genre defining/busting/expanding records. So being 4 slots down from say...panzerfaust or circle the wagons is no little thing. Cheers to Fenriz and Nocturnal Culto, 10 more albums!!!
