I left Darlington over 35years ago (not by choice), parents!!! This brought back so many memories of being a kid walking around the town, even though the place has changed massively!, Darlington will always be home to me. Thank you for the upload and the trip down memory lane
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked the video and that it brought back some nice memories of Darlington. It's always amazing how you can remember a place so perfectly even when it has changed so much as you said :)
My mother was from Darlington and my Grandfather finished his apprenticeship as a boilersmith at the Stephenson's locomotive works in 1911. I spent time on holiday with some relatives back in 1964 and also queued outside the cinema to see the Beatles film, Hard Days Night. Your excellent walking tour brought back great memories. Darlington is a fabulous place. Thank you
Wow! A great family history from a great town - I'm glad I could help to bring back some nice memories of Darlington for you, and I'm really thankful for your kind words about the video :)
Wow! Grew up in Darlington left about a decade ago for University in Edinburgh, never been back since, this video was great nostalgia and so fun to see how everything has changed! I still remember School Swimming lessons at the Dolphin Centre!
It's amazing how things do evolve so quickly - and I'm very glad you've had the chance to see what Darlington looks like today - hopefully it brought back some nice memories too :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
I'm so glad to hear it! Darlington is a great town and one to be very proud of - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some memories too :) Thank you so much for watching!
It’s such a lovely higgledy piggledy place full of charm and secret shops hidden away up little allys. Lots of historic magnificent buildings churches and lots of cute parks dotted about at the ends /fronts /sides /backs of the terraces 🙂. Lovely place to live.🙂🌺🌹❤️
It certainly is! There's a whole lot more to Darlington than first meets the eye - it's a fascinating town full of character and history :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for posting this fantastic video! I was born in Stockton-On-Tees but grew up in Darlington from 1980 - 1995. I've lived many places since leaving including Glasgow, Newcastle, London and now Miami in Florida but Darlo will ALWAYS feel like coming home. Your video brought many warm and awesome memories come flooding back. It's great to see how even though somethings have obviously changed, a lot is still exactly as it was back then. Brilliant....thank you again. 😊😊
Splendid ! Some very interesting historical anicdotes . I have only visited ' Darlo ' once and that was to change trains - about forty years ago . It was a Saturday night and I decided to go around the town for a few beers . However, there were punch-ups breaking out every five minutes or so. Consequently I decided to call it quits after three pints . As you say , the Quakers were/are influential in the area and the local football team got their nick-name from these worthy people . Seeking tranquility I headed for the Feethams as the stadium was called . Sadly , at 10 pm it was locked . I have often wondered if I had stayed in the pubs longer and had a few more beers .... I might have climbed the fence in order to tread on hallowed turf !
A very interesting story! I'm sure you'll find a bit of rowdiness in all towns especially on a Saturday night, but Darlington is indeed a fascinating place to visit, perhaps more so on a calmer morning like this :) But still - glad you got to check out the footie stadium (or at least the outside of it!) Thank you very much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks very much for that...i grew up in Darlington and still have family near but have been living in Sydney for 22 years now...it brought a tear to my eye 🙂👍
Nice walk of the town. I enjoyed it. Very beautiful and historical the medieval houses, churches, and buildings are. Your history lessons are always great and your walks are always enjoyable. Can't wait to see more soon greetings from Canada. Have a great day. How is your week going? My week is going well 😀😀
Really enjoyed that video . Very interesting & informative . Often wondered why Darlington fc were called the Quakers . Now I know . Look forward to watching the other videos .
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, there's certainly a lot of unique history to discover in Darlington - and I always find that local football team nicknames are a great way to discover just that :) Thank you so much for watching!
I was born in Darlington and lived there for 25 years. I must have walked along Post House Wynd and up Duke street hundreds of times on my way to the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, established in the 13th century I believe, but the school no longer exists. Some parts of the town are quite picturesque but the majority of the buildings during your walk border on being ugly. It's mainly the shop fronts that let the place down, it seems the owners have no pride in their premises appearances. It has certainly changed a lot since I lived there; unfortunately for the worst. One of the best things about Darlington is the friendliness of the people. I now live in the South of England where people are not so open and a lot less friendly, especially to people with a Northern accent. My wife and I would not hesitate to retire back in Darlington if it were not for the grandchildren, who do, of course, speak with a southern accent!
Ha ha those are some wonderful memories indeed! You're right that there are some shops and buildings which are in need of a bit of care, but the character of Darlington and above all its history do make it a great town :) Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!
It depends on how old you are; if you're relatively young, under 45 say, then it would be fairly easy to build a new set of friends. The people are more friendly and accept "foreigners" easier than they do down South. I suppose, life is what you make it, but perhaps you could make a better life with a few extra pounds in your pocket! Another factor depends on what family ties you would have to break by moving a couple of hundred miles away. I wouldn't suggest venturing too far North - some Scottish people do not welcome the English - in my experience.
We went to Darlington when on holiday staying quite close to it. .I can't off-hand remember the place. But it was a lovely village known for its Roman Walls and There was a Roman site... Only went once to Darlington but found the place very nice 👍 and good amenities..... Keep up the great work with the videos ☺️...
Perhaps Binchester? That's near to Darlington just north of Bishop Auckland, and home to an amazing Roman fort :) Darlington too has some great history to it - and some rather impressive architecture that tells the town's story very well, so I'm sure you had a great trip that time! Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

Oh wow! I like to think of the pub in Mechanics' Yard as a well-held secret among Darlington locals, but I'm sure you know it inside out as you say! Thank you so much for watching the video, I'm really glad you enjoyed it and that it brought back some nice memories :)

ya know what I love about most places I have visited via you tube on England?.....NO TRASH or garbage of any kind on the streets....the Darlington and Bradford videos shows that no papers,no butts, nothing all clean streets.
I hope you had a good time when you visited, and maybe this video brought back some memories for you :) Thank you so much for watching - I hope you enjoyed the video!
It's turning into a ghost town... Lots of empty shops in the cornmill centre and Queen Street... Due to high rent etc, but other than that it's a good town place to live.
I really appreciate your comment about the restoration of the river bank...hopefully that noisy, polluting inner ring road will also be greened over, transformed into a boulevard, limiting traffic to one lane each direction and thus reconnecting the centre with the rest of darlington. Many Uk towns and cities could easily turn around their awful ring roads into tree lined, civilised boulevards, couldn´t they?
It's really heartening to see lots of cities around the country starting to open up their road networks into shared spaces with pedestrians - I was recently in Southend-on-Sea where they've turned a previously ugly ring road into a gorgeous seafront promenade! You'll get to see a walk around Southend soon, but you're absolutely right - this kind of restoration makes all the difference to making a town a joy to walk around :)
Thank you so much - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! I'm sorry I didn't manage to spend a bit more time on High Row or go in the station - there's just so much of Darlington to see that I couldn't quite fit it all in the one video :) Thank you very much for watching!
What the hell happened ? . The town is no more a busy market town ..lot shops etc ...am agrophobic been 20 yrs our town is dead full off barbers restaurants & takeaway ...what happened ?
The Great Reset via COVID. WFH. Stay home stay safe. All that evil bollocks. Hopefully the people have rallied and are filling the streets again now we all know how much we were played.
Hey! Can anyone say how the place near Teesside uni, Darlington is? I haven't got any pictures of the area on the internet and I got the offer letter just yesterday. I am freaking out a little.
I live here now,. But I'm really missing HOME IN THE SOUTH. Unfortunately this has not been a good time in my life, 8 yrs I've lived here, and everyone seems DODGY, no offense. All I've experienced here has been MISERY for me.
