As a child of Irish and Italian parents I too am a recovering catholic, but I've never got around to writing a song about it! I was watching Bert Newton's funeral today and it reminded me how they go on about reminding you that you're apparently covered in sin, even at the poor bloke's funeral! Christ, no wonder I'm so guilt-ridden and anxious about everything in life after having that sin-talk pumped down my throat through my childhood. Luckily I read a lot of mythology later, along with Jungian breakdowns of it, and realised it was just that - a bunch of stories borrowed from earlier religious cults designed to run a society. Anyway, nice work, Darren. Although I can't help but wonder if all those gigs you do in churches count as church attendance? :) PS: You may remember me - you gave Bob Ellis and I a lift after my Lenny Bruce In Sydney play at Bondi Pav many years ago.
Jung was an Occultist and largely both misleading and mislead. Don't get too flabbergasted by his flowery intellectualising. It's mostly grist for the misguided mill. The word sin is actually an old archery term and it literally means merely "to miss the mark." We are imperfect, fragile beings. We all "miss the mark" constantly and Christ, in his Loving and tender Mercy simply gives us a shot at redemption and the chance to recognise the Divine part within ourselves as well. Catholicism is about Redemption. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Viva Cristo Rey!
"The Church is full of Hypocrites...and we've always room for a few more." I've been through it Darren, I'm a bit older than you. God is Patient, Loving and Enduring. “We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time." T.S. Eliot Make no mistake, Catholicism is The One, True Faith. You've been given the 'pearl of great price." Don't squander it nor feed it to swine.
@Sanctus Paulus 1962 I forget the tone and context I wrote this in. Probably something about the lyrics in this song. Great song though. I would have loved to catch him live a few months back. Oh well.
