Outdoors Inspiration, Shamus McCaffery, sets out for a stormy wild camp in extremely windy Dartmoor weather. With his trusty companion Petra the German Shepherd, he pitches a Hilleberg Soulo and talks us through some windy weather wild camping precautions and the use of head torches for wild camping. He recounts some history and the origins of the infamous Dartmoor Prison. With Nearly four decades of wild camping experience, Shamus shares his skills and knowledge on Dartmoor National Park, where he continues to live and work.

Great video Shamus and Petra. Sound advice ref double guying and making the tent secure then checking it again. You have got to give the tent a fighting chance in conditions like those and as you say let Hilleberg as an experienced tent producer do the rest! I calculate about 5 hours runtime of 600 lumen plus for my overnights (2hrs to allow for walking and pitching the tent, 1 for tent use but I then will switch to a lighter back up torch, and 2hours for an emergency walk out if I have to in the middle of the night). So pleased for the both of you that you are getting out so much.. Tom
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Thanks Tom - as I explained to another comment, the guying is all about spreading the load to the anchor points. It a peg lifts in soft ground in that wind it can have a serious impact - do double guying spreads that load to 50% on each peg 👍 The wild camping will no doubt have to pause while lock down commences 😊🐶

I slept in October in a similar condition (close to the Sharp Tor) but foolishly using the tarp. Quite an experience to be in a downpour. For about one hour, it was like sleeping under the waterfall. Of course, in the middle of the night, I was in the pool of water.

Shamus, thanks for the video - I really like that your intent seems to be information and getting others out there, not drone images and content for the sake of content! I would be really interested to know what you do when Petra is sopping wet or particularly muddy when you get to your pitch site, which must occur through the winter. A quick drying towel and hope she doesn't shake off inside the tent? Some sort of coat kept on the dog overnight? Whats your strategy to get her dry and keep the inside ofyour tent as clean as possible?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 2 года назад
Hi ML - When it’s wet, I use a tent where separation is possible. I have a micro towel to dry her as well as a fleecy jacket - the jacket isn’t just to warm her up, it’s to soak up any residual dampness. Insulating her from the floor is important too. But she doesn’t come into the main compartment until she’s quite dry.

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Thanks Seamus, I'll look into a fleece type jacket for my dog - hopeful of getting him out with me. He would love it but will absolutely get wet, so want to be prepared. Come back to this video, as I have with many on your channel time and again; they are both really entertaining and informative - you capture Dartmoor and the wild camping experience better than most. Out of interest, is your a black or red label Soulo? I'm considering upgrading from my Terra Nova and wondering if the red label will stand up to the worst of Dartmoor, I.E., a forecast that changes for the worse, as soon as you are out on the hill!
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 11 месяцев назад
The tent in the video is a red label. If the forecast isn’t what’s expected the. Find some shelter in the Lee of a hill / tor etc - guying points are an important part of the tent’s structure 👍

Petra looks like a lovely dog. Ever tried a head torch from Lupine? Lupine is a German company and a bit expensive, but makes a cracking piece of kit. I have the Lupine Piko X series (there are newer models now), and I love it. It’s 1800 lumen max. output, and 40 lumen min. output. On 40 lumen it’s supposed to last for 80 hours (rechargeable of course). Love the Soulo and the Reactor (have the same pieces of kit). Enjoyed the video very much. Merry Christmas 👍🏻👍🏻🇳🇴

Id like to ask for the link for the giveaway as Iam looking at tents to live in for hopefully just the meantime but I'd like to know your thoughts on a tent as Iam looking at the oex coyote iii and the vango mirage. I think I might order it tonight still undecided what would be best for a budget tent with this wind and cold wet winter. The Vango has a lit more height for living space to be comfortable, but then the OEX has a bigger vestibule 👍

That was a windy one. Thought you might of double poled the tent? What hillebergs thought on doubling up on guys? Would you do long backpacks with this tent?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 Год назад
I suppose there’s a little philosophical debate about double polling vs anchor points. If you think about the geometry of this tent, guy lines aren’t just holding the tent out / down, they actually add strength to the structure. If they are strong then the poles are less likely to flex / break. I would choose something much lighter for a long trail, you could carry so much more food and fuel if the tent was lighter. But, as always, opinions vary 😊

Hi Shamus. No wonder you couldn't message back on Saturday night! Excellent video with not only some fascinating facts about the Prison but I loved the technical explanation on the double pegging. I bet that was a BAS 'top tip' from when you were out in a field party. I also thought you were brave with the chosen exposed location but it's great to have faith in your kit! As for me well I would have applied the first principle of survival (Protection) and would have used those rocks to hide behind! 😂 Anyway, another captivating video. Keep them coming! ATVB Graham

@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Haha 😂 Evening Graham, yes there is some 'artificiality; in the respect that I picked the most windy exposed spot I could ... But otherwise it would have been a video about some mist and rain 😂 The peg thing is something I di with rope rescue systems to support ta driven stake for a rescue package (ie people) - getting long pegs into snow in Antarctica isn't normally a problem - except once in a real blow, we ended up digging in dead men and all sorts of shenanigans ... It wasn't a good night, one side of the tent was tied to the dog sledge which was tied to the dogs who were tied to a rock 😂😂🐶🐶

Another excellent video. Great facts about the prison. I heard that some of the French prisoners it housed were actually used to complete its construction, though not sure if that's true or not. Interesting little tip about clipping the tent to the poles - I learned that one the hard way. The first time I pitched my Soulo, I pulled too hard on the clip and the stiching connecting it to the tent fabric ripped. It was a test pitch and I was in my living room, so not a disaster. I would've sent it back to the retailer for repair but didn't have time (trip to the mountains) so fixed it myself with some rather primitive stiching and seam sealant. Has held up fine ever since. I like the Soulo when there is decent breeze. I find wind (not my own!) can help to manage condensation build up. If wind driven rain is not an issue, I sometimes create a bit more airflow by wedging something non abrasive under the flysheet wall . Once I had 3 people in the Soulo for breakfast (inner taken down and packed). Bit of a squeeze but possible if you're not all very big people. Cheers.

@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 Год назад
On that occasion they were a standard length that came with an order from Big Sky International - approx 2.5m. I would say 2m is my minimum line that I carry with a mini line lock. Having guy lines that are too short brings the peg close to the tent which has less ability to counter the horizontal forces of the wind against the structure.

Two potential problems with rechargeable reactive controlled headtorches (or maybe three)... No1 - When a torch with a built-in rechargeable battery goes flat, they'll often switch off, or flash a warning then shortly afterwards they switch off. It's a battery safety feature. What it means is that if, say, you're doing any night travel or other task then you're b******d because your light is out until the battery gets recharged - and that takes time, which could mean you're waiting in a situation you'd rather not be waiting in. I prefer a headtorch where flat batteries (either rechargeable or non-rechargeable type) can immediately be replaced with fresh ones so I can keep going. I don't like fixed batteries that have to be recharged in situ rather than are able to be replaced. No2 (maybe) - that's a very high quality headtorch you show and I have no experience of it by which to criticize battery output capability in sub-zero conditions, but with any item having a built-in battery you're stuck with the cold-weather performance of that battery. Poor specification types don't work well when it's cold - maybe won't work at all - and again you're b******d if your headtorch goes out because it's cold. A replaceable battery option can prevent this by careful battery selection - Eneloop rechargeable batteries (AA/AAA, maybe other sizes) have extremely good cold-weather performance for example, including some capable of operating down to -60°C! Investigation suggests to me that IKEA LADDA rechargeable batteries are Eneloops in an IKEA branded sleeve... No3 -
@richardbarrett2317
@richardbarrett2317 3 года назад
Oops... No3 - Reactive lighting control systems can reduce the output of a headtorch if there is snow/hail reflecting the headtorch light output back to the reactive control sensor. Whether or not that's welcome I'll leave readers to determine for themselves, but in practice I know it as a bloody annoying situation at best.

Fantastic video but from now on demonstrate your learning (that you're getting now) but saying "the guys" not "guy lines". Guy lines/rope/chain/wire is terrible English. Common, but terrible. The guy IS the rope!! So you're technically saying "the line line". If you do need to disambiguate guys it should be fore guys, aft guys, or front guys and rear guys, side guys, corner guys, etc. Or at the very least, if we accept "guy line" we must also accept "guide line" (ugh) as valid English (guy and guide having the same root).

I’m over on Exmoor, much less wild than Dartmoor! 😂 All of my wild camping kit is currently in a box in the wardrobe..since my daughter came along it’s just been sedate family camping for the last 3 yrs. I miss wild camping on Dartmoor...maybe time to brush it all of! I used to go to the Dartmoor prison officers bar with my Dad, usually for Dartmoor letterboxing meets, in the late 70’s and 80’s. Petra is a lovely hound, I’ve got a Springer myself. Whilst it’s great to have company when camping, it’s not so great to share a tent with an enthusiastic bog swimming spaniel! 😂

Hi Shamus, what weather source do you find most accurate for the Moors? I’m doing a trip later this week, and have found large differences in websites like the Met and the BBC. Do you have a go-to that is reliable?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Hi Alistair - In terms of weather I’m quite fortunate because I have a reasonable lay-persons understanding of how weather systems form (I’m a trained met observer of many years). Consequently I tend to look at a forecast and synoptic chart coupled with what is happening on the the moor (I live on the moor). Anyway, the upshot is that I find the BBC weather app is as good a resource as any to be honest. If you use Princetown as a starting point that’s normally a good indication 👍🐶😊

Great video. I’ve been thinking of getting a Arab bag for winter camps, do you still need to wear your down jacket, mid and base layers with it?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Hi 😊 Did you mean a Rab bag? - Base layers are always a good idea, it keeps the bag clean. The amount of layers you wear as part of your sleep system will be entirely dependant on 1) how cold or hot you sleep 2) the insulation level of your sleep mat 3) the rating and fill of your sleeping bag 4) the actual air temperature. Other factors like humidity and dampness will play a big part too. I try to aim to sleep in base layers, then other clothing could be brought into play if I'm feeling cold 👍

Grand video as always Shamus. I like the tip with the double pegging technique 👌 Double guying a Suolo seems a tad extreme though. The guys on the Suolo are pretty bombproof (or so you Hilleberg chaps would have us skinflints believe). With the double pegging trick i'm curious as to your reasoning for the double guying to see if there is something to add to my technique arsenal.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Evening... It's not about 'breaking guy lines', or the tent. It's spreading the load across two anchors from the same point, the ground was soft and could potentially pull - so with a double guy, each anchor only takes only 50% of the load - with strong gusty winds there is a lot of dynamic force which could pull a peg, once it's gone you have lost a lot of windward structural support from a guy line.
@peakfreak01
@peakfreak01 3 года назад
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 a fair point my friend. Being an ex Rech Mech I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to working loads, anchorage mechanical advantages etc even down to the smaller forces of tent guys. I haven't got a dog at the moment ... but I have a question that I'm sure I'm not the only person who doesn't know the answer! If Petra got injured whilst on Dartmoor, is there any assistance you could call on if you could not transport her to safety yourself? Obviously if we get injured I know it would be the ambulance service, potentially with help from the coast guard etc - but what about animals? That's a very valid point, in respect of rechargeable 'anything' really👍 But the power management on this means that hopefully I won't get to that point - so far so good. Great video, I've just bought a Soulo. Interestingly whilst searching eBay I found one sold, sellers description below, it didn't put me off and not meant to be critical of a great design but must have been a right storm 'Hilleberg Soulo with footprint. Condition is "For parts or not working". Where do I start!. My old trusty hilleberg has been on the receiving end of mother nature. Mega gust blew it over with me in it resulting in poles completely damaged or bent. 3 holes in the outer tent fabric that I can see. Two in the vent cover and one near the front door. The support strap on the base has snapped. From what I can see that's it but it's difficult to be 100 percent accurate. Foot print has lost two toggles. I have tent bag and pole bag but no peg bag as gone with the wind' Ouch!

quite interesting watching this from down in New Zealand, looking at the different ways we do things and the variations in terrain and foliage. For New Zealand that looked like a fairly mild storm. We are also luckily to have over 1000 backcountry huts we can shelter in if its get bad. They might not be pretty but a metal shed with a few bunks is better than blowing off the side of a mountain in a wild storm :-)
