I agree. I love seeing what artists like Tom McDonald are doing. He is completely independent. He owns all of his music. All of it. He's got multiple billboard top 10's and 1's. Went from nothing to millionaire several times over. This computer age can eliminate the old industry. I'm OK with that. Let the artists do what they do and be rewarded for their work.

I was just going to comment on Tom McDonald! He broke the system and I’m 55 having witnessed how bad that system was for musical artists. I support Tom because of what Daryl and the others had to go through. Nothing they could have done differently in their time. That’s why it means so much now to witness a breakthrough! ❤

My late hubby was a bassist in a band in Philly (also a Temple U student) with John Oates. In fact, John left their band to team up with Daryl permanently. He said no one liked Daryl due to his arrogance! But they never blamed John for the move because Daryl was so freakin' talented.

When you're a person who's gifted with 'it' (and you know it), and you have every confidence that you're going to become a big success at 'it' if you stay your course, you're automatically different from everybody else in very obvious ways. You move in ways that are simply different, and you carry an energy that focuses you on that success. You don't allow the negative energy of other people, or 'bad luck', or unsolicited advice temper your resolve. You stay focused on your goals even when doing so means you have to suffer for a while. Darryl had this. He had it when he was very young. When you listen to him sing live and unplugged it is very, very obvious. People who don't understand this vibe will judge and criticize, and they call it 'arrogance' because, in their minds, you should look, act, and live just like everyone else does. I've read many biographies of famous and successful people and they all describe this very thing though in different ways.
@glennzlotowski8020

I dont believe that he had the confidence when he was young and arrogance. In school he was a quiet kid and was picked on , that's why he never came back to Owen j Robert's school when they invited him because he hated it there. I know people who went to school with him.

Its interesting to listen to some of these old school celebs talk about how they got ripped off by their record labels, lawyers, and accountants. We always see celebs as powerful, successful, and invulnerable. They look good and seem so happy, and we presume them to be incredibly wealthy and blissful...the ones who made it big in the industry when the industry was good. Only, we now know that the industry was never good. I have watched so many of these videos with some of the biggest names in the industry saying the same thing---they made ridiculous amounts of money for the record labels yet at times found themselves broke (or close to being broke). I watched Diana Ross talk about this...that people think its all lights, glamor, and big smiles (she too had lost a LOT of money at one time because of being ripped off), and that many of the artists she came up with started out young and didn't understand the business part of showbusiness when they first got into it.

This is a travesty. Can't be no "Hall" without "Oates." That's like the sun without the moon. Hopefully, they can resolve this with a sit-down.

Daryl is a great musician, and I was never much of a fan. I think their big hits are what turned me off. Songs like “Rich Girl” and “She’s Gone” are so much better than “Maneater” or any of those other forgettable songs that made them popular during the Eighties.

Darryl is from my town of Pottstown, Pa but his last name was different and he has his show name he uses . He walked by me at a place called zerns in Gilbertsville some years ago and i didn't pay attention till my brother said who it was . One of the famous from Pottstown and also Taylor Swift

Amazing singer, but he has been increasingly dismissive of John Oates in recent years. It diminishes all the good work they did, and it doesn't speak well of him.

It's a shame how record companies take advantage of recording artists. Now a days you can bypass record companies and put out your own EPV. When you put out your own music, you control all of the rights to your music. Prince wrote all of these amazing songs but Warner Brothers owned the rights to everything. So Prince had to leave Warner Brothers and re-release of his music under a different label so he could control it. You hear horror stories about artists who had a lot of hit records being broke, because the record companies took advantage of them and then cast them off once they started to get old, and basically left them with nothing.

Meeting in an elevator because you had to escape a fight is the most Philly meet-cute ever.

As Daryl says, the first time around for "She's Gone" wasn't a big deal. I don't know how much airplay they got elsewhere but in my town it would only get played late at night. So night birds like me felt we had our own little band in Hall & Oates. When they did break and "She's Gone" went big along with "Sarah Smile" I felt a little ownership of that. After all these years these two guys are still great songwriters and performers and have always been a class act. Not bad for a couple of guys from Philly.

Folks this is the reality of the biz even for those both beautiful and talented. Imagine being a great songwriter who just isn’t sexy? Nope. No music dreams for you. It’s a biz full of people who should be fashion models with no affinity for artists.
