Daryl Hall sues former music partner John Oates 

“Hall & Oates” turned into “Hall VS Oates”.

This is extremely sad for me to hear. You got to be kidding me ! I love them both.Their music I has always been such a big part of me growing up! Every single song I loved . They both were creators of their music. I love Daryl’s voice but I honestly have to say John played a huge role and sang too. Playing an instrument of music 🎶 is creative in itself. My brother plays guitar and piano and synthesizer . Come on guys grow up and acknowledge each other ! There is more to life than money and ego. Love and friendship is the most important.😢❤

Jokes aside this is very sad, They are very iconic duo, Other bands like New Order and Tears for Fears have had similar disputes

The scary thing is that if you look up the songs that John wrote were some of the groups biggest hits.

This is Daryl Hall's fault. John Oates is the long-suffering partner. "Not a creative partner" is about the worst thing to say to a co-creator. Hall has never acknowledged the creative debt he owes to John Oates and his R & B influence.

Daryl is also suing John Oates’ Mustache.

I've seen this coming. I love both of them and can see both of their contributions to the music... and the show. Old age is setting in and apparently, like a lot of us, they're losing insight. And, Daryl seems to be making some thoughtless comments. It's too bad. Come on boys!

For those coming to this story late, the legal action is to block Oates from selling his share of their joint enterprise to an investment firm. Hall claims the proposed sale process breaks a confidentiality agreement the two had over their business partnership. It appears that Hall doesn't want to lose any additional control over his own publishing rights, and anyone who knows a little about the music business can understand why.

I think GMA are only "assuming" that the dispute is regarding John performing Hall and Oates songs but this makes no sense as half of Daryl's solo show is H&O tracks including Out Of Touch which is primarily an Oates composition.

What's sad is they were successful as a duo. They'll never make it solo. They need each other. But there are other groups and artists, sch as the "White Chocolate", as Black people called her back in the day, the great Teena Marie, who sued Barry Gordy and Motown, and actually won the lawsuit, and it is well know in R&B circles, that they have always remained friends, it's just a business thing with those royalties and all that which have to get straightened out.

I think Daryl could never accept that he wasn't a successful solo artist. He probably assumed after ,"the BIg 80's " that he would naturally become as successful on his own as with John. That of course, never happened.

Greed. They both should be able to sing the group's songs independently. What's the big deal? It's not like they are a contemporary band. They've had their day in the sun...time to move on.

This has nothing to do with the music or the business. This has to do with some strife between the two. And that drives the anger and actions that we are seeing now. This is incredibly sad. Both amazing contributions to the Hall & Oates history. My only wish is that there is some reconciliation between them. Make no mistake about it, they are both suffering as a result of it.

This is very very very very and can I say again very SAD!!!😢😢 This group is a part of my life growing up! They are my family that I never got a chance to meet. I really pray that they can come to an amicable agreement outside of the courtroom. Even if it might have not been so to them, they are in a way family. Family should be able to work things out to the benefit of everyone.

They're out of touch..

I've worked in various minor roles in the music biz and played with some names, and unfortunately, this is actually more common than people realize. As musicians age and can no longer get hits on the radio (a medium the Web pretty much destroyed anyway) they have to protect their income streams, and that's why you see so many of these aging acts mired in lawsuits over names and brand use. Many people would be surprised how close to poverty some of their classic rock heroes are at the moment, because they got screwed in a publishing deal or over royalties. It's also why you'll often see two or three versions of the band on tour, since litigious members can't play together without wanting to kill each other but all need the money that came from them being together in the first place. In their case, they made the mistake of using both their names as their brand, thus forever linking them in the public and making it difficult for both of them to simply make money as solo artists. I hope they just come up with an out-of-court settlement as they have a great musical legacy and I would hate to see this be the final chapter. But then again, even the Beatles ended their actual time as a band together suing each other for a couple of years.

After being together for all of those years, you would think at their age in their late 70's, they would reconcile. Acting like 12 year olds... When one of these guys passes, the other would probably have many regrets of how their long time relationship ended..Patch it up, Hall and Oates before its too late!....Oops, I meant Daryl Hall and John Oates...

Pathetic. I'm retired and live on a very strict budget and I'm as happy as can be. These guys are millionaires and THIS is how their spend their time, fighting over nonsense?!? Blows my mind. WOW

So Hall claims they are friends but he does this. He says they are business partners which they are, but he says they are not creative partners. He says he has issue with Oates playing H&O songs when he does solo shows. Okay so that means Oates essentially is just a hired hand on stage and on recordings so he can't play songs Hall wrote. Maybe there is more to this than we know but it seems so wrong on Hall's part not letting Oates play the songs he is part of.

I remember reading a Daryl Hall interview over 30 years ago. He was definitely into himself. He came off sounding like a disingenuous, self absorbed tool. I figure the only reason that they still work(ed) together because it was in their best interest to do so.

Why do they have the comments section way down here? Anyway, high schoolers have never even heard of Darryl Hall and John Oates. And if they listened to their music, they might think, "Whose grandpa's are these guys, anyway?" Whatever. To music fans, music is a religion. It's sacred. But to people who have to earn their living off of music, every day is a battle for survival, being able to pay the grocery bill, and the other essential bills. These two guys have nothing in common with most musical duos, who are just scraping by.

How sad, however, not surprising when you listen to the things that Daryl has said about John over the years.

As someone who has loved them for quite literally all of my life, they always seemed so supportive and respectful of each other in their interviews, and honestly, I was impressed by their lack of discord over money. They go back to being teenagers and going over to each other's parents houses. Then being roommates in Philadelphia. There is such personal history there...a foundation of trust and acceptance. And that they acknowledged that they balanced each other out and each brought different things to the table. There was a Howard Stern interview with Daryl Hall a few years ago, and understandably, Howard Stern, of course he just wanted an interesting interview. So it seemed like Howard Stern was almost baiting Daryl Hall to say something negative about John Oates' contributions, but he wouldn't take the bait and was very respectful. I had heard that John Oates is pretty chill and humble, and as with many successful and talented people, Daryl Hall had a big ego, and it seemed like a really positive quality that he worked with John Oates for so long because a person's ego can't be that unhealthy if one wants to keep working with someone who really knows everything about one....good and bad. They both had more than enough money, so that fact that they kept coming back together to tour seemed like it was for the joy of it. That was the vibe I got seeing them together a few years ago. It was not a "paycheck performance". It was joyful and fun.

The Beatles ditto...When it becomes more about money than music, management entities and copyright/contract honchos stick their briefcases in. i got my hands on an advance copy of oates' autobiography some years ago. it sat around, untouched and unread, for quite a while...until i realized one day that i didnt give a damn what oates had to say. i got rid of it.

I seen Live from Daryls house. Daryl performs hall & Oates songs on there without Oates then sues Oates for performing the songs without hall. Whats the matter dude your mansion not big enough?

This is exactly why business and friendship (Same Social Personal Beliefs or Views, Commonality, Chemistry, etc.) never mix. Though the duo made great music together, their personal beliefs, directions, views and lives weren't always par. You could work well together with somebody business wise but when it comes down to your social personal beliefs or views with the same person you work together with, the relationship could turn out a whole, total, different story. When you're a duo and both party have fifty \ fifty ownership of the same interest whatever that maybe (Example: Home, Joint Accounts, Business, Company, Estate, etc.), (In this case, catalogue of their classic hits or a jointed owned company, Hall Oates Enterprises) often both party must agree if they want to sell off the duo ownership together. It's like if a married couple who are both the owner to their deed of their home but one wants to sell while the other doesn't and now that leaves a conflict which often would have to be disputed or settle in court.
