I think that is a FANTASTIC idea to apply for a Habitat for Humanity House! My cousin was a recipient of that many years ago as a single mom with 2 children also. Absolutely talk to them as soon as you can about your current situation. You are correct that they care and listen to the current situation for each applicant and consider the "whole" story! my heart breaks for you, but I can identify with a lot of your plight. I've struggled most of my adult life, divorced with 4 kids, all grown now. I was lucky to get a home in a decent low income neighborhood in 2009 when foreclosures were popping up like StarBucks. But I was drowning in debt . I finally got my credit cards all paid off through debt consolidation and paid off my car the same year. Finally for the first time in my adult life debt free at the age of 62. I'm now 64 and living on retirement benefits from the school district I worked for and social security. Very tight budget but scraping by. I feel for you and your circumstances. Life can suck pretty hard sometimes, and it often feels like it sucks all the time.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m in a condo in southeast Florida and it’s gotten really expensive. Insurance has gone up so much that my association payment is almost $600/month. I have no advice, I would leave this state if I could. 😢

I think this is such a good idea I hope they give you a plan to help you get this done even if you don't qualify right away. This is a big first step & will be stressful to get all these steps done but so worth it to have your own private place away from the condo. I would call up that plumber & get some money deducted for him working on someone elses place while you paid him that is insane.

I am so sorry Meaty Mama this is happening to you. A lot of the situations are made even worse by people who just dont care. While it wont change your frustrations, my neighbor is annoying in other ways. The chances i moved to a town with 7K people and my neighbor is the way they are really makes me just laugh at this point, its that or i'll cry.

I think that is a great idea!! Why aren't you eligibile for medical assistance? In Minnesota we have Mn Care which is for a household of 1 even can have income of 42,000 or less, so 3 person household should be 85000 or higher

Is there any low income housing lists you can get on? Around me there are several options and lists you can get on, especially with your sons disabilities around here you would qualify instantly.

Homeowners associations are the worst. They use the money they collect for themselves and not for the homeowners. Here in South Florida, it's even worse. My wife and I are considering buying a nice RV. It's less expensive than a house mortgage, especially in the current economy.

Their is medicaid for families, also besides medicaid Hospitals may off financial assistance and the income limit is higher.

If you sell, request a contingentcy and rent back period. Talk to a realtor. Then it could be seamless.

Florida isn't cheap to live in, houses, condos and apartment rents are high. What I've learned about some areas of florida 2 bedrooms rent for $1,800 to $3,000 per month and require people to make 2.5 to 3x the rent monthly.

The office in my area requires you to volunteer so many hours before they will consider getting you into a home. Only adults can do these hours and it can take years to work them all. I only say this as I looked into it. I am also a single mom with 2 kids. My oldest is an adult now but lives at home and my ASD son will turn 18 this year. Our kids are in different places in life but I feel your frustration. Look into low income housing assistance as well in your area and see if they can help you. Google your options in the area you live or are willing to relocate too. If you can move further out of the city you might find cheaper housing options with a longer drive. I do this and have found it is better for my family if I travel the hour. It's not for everyone but it's worth a look. You are an out of the box thinker and I have faith in time you will find what you're in need of. I know you're frustrated and people suck sometimes but don't let it push you to rush into something you haven't gotten to research yet. Best of luck. Sending well wishes and positive vibes your way!

The price of houses had doubled the last few years. So your insurance and taxes and maintenance has increased. Upgrading will also double. If you have a house you will still have neighbors.
