Some times i find my self watching videos about how other people do the exact same thing i commonly do. just something i find myself doing to gather more information. Its awesome to see how other people do things because a lot of times they have great information. We are in a field that requires endless learning. Edit... Raid 5 for more storage why not raid 6 just so you can have a failure during a rebuild and still be OK. I guess its just a lab but still just for a little more storage.. Edit 2... readability got a notification and realized it was a little butchered

raid setup must be it touch with disk load of the device. maybe raid 10 is better for this load pattern. raid 5 - more storage, raid 10 - more performance.
@bofhvp
@bofhvp 4 года назад
Alexandr Oskolkov - raid 10 leaves you with approx 50% storage. Also if you watched, this raid card didn’t offer raid 6. Just raid 0, 1, 5, 10 and 15. You can’t get raid 6 by adding raid 1 + raid 5 = raid 6 😂
@alexandroskolkov2231
@alexandroskolkov2231 4 года назад
@@bofhvp raid 10 - more speed and more redundancy. you can lost 50% of disks in raid 10 (but not 2 in one pair). raid setup must be in touch(!!!) with disk load of the array. if you need speed and safety - raid 10, but it costs 50% of storage capacity.

@Jack Richardson Show me one datacenter that is not transparent and open then. I worked with several big datacenters in Europe before and they were all open and transparent about everything, because its the way how they make money. That's their selling point. Purpose of the comment was to push them to bring better content to the audience and not for you to try and say something.

I do such ESX Cluster builds on a daily basis for various data centers across the globe! The only difference is that I do it remotely via iLO or XClarity, wish I had the opportunity to do it live with hardware! So many ESX builds and I haven't even touched server hardware even once :D Could you recommend some hardware that I can get for a lab setup at home or would it even be feasible? [Got ample space for a rack as well]

If the hardware is already on site and plugged in for your client, how come they need to outsource for the set up?
@deepesh2252
@deepesh2252 3 года назад
@@kevinportillo1971 Well it's various locations across the globe for my organization for example regional offices, factories, storage facilities etc. But everything is controlled and monitored via once single location. So once hardware is connected, I set it up according to our organization standards, integrate it with active directory for management, add it to vSphere, other monitoring tools, move workloads (VMs) etc. There is no client as such. For example we source our hardware from HPE at a location in Europe for example which is a production facility, local technician at that facility works with HPE vendors to get hardware setup then I work with local technician to get that hardware into our ecosystem/vmware environment.

My question is compare a home lab to a datacenter Does it really make sense to get a license for the home lab? Do we really need all them features that comes with the license or or would the free one will do? What i mean is running VM and KVM would we need that license?

I have a question. I know if you are working in a datacenter using EXSI you pay for it. But the cost for an normal person is high. I know there is a free one of EXSI but i was curious what are you losing? I'm i know it works how many cores are you giving up and memory as well as functions of vmware EXSI?

@colt1596
@colt1596 4 года назад
OS as you say would be better called bare metal. As an os installed directly on a Server without VM is called Bare metal. A VM allows you to install multiple os instances and create vm images that can easily be deleted, restored, tinkered with, etc.. But depending on the deployment bare metal may be better. Like freenas (yes I know it works on vm) is better suited for bare metal. So a VM is easier and more efficient to manage... now into dockers ;P

RAID 5 is pretty old and I wouldn’t personally ever set it up on a production system today. Especially not for virtualisation with it’s poor write performance even on cached controllers. Over the years I’ve seen some arrays take days or even weeks to recalculate the parity data and complete a rebuild, even had a second disk fail during that time losing the entire array. With the price and capacity of mechanical disks what they are now RAID 10 is the best option. It’s as tolerant as RAID 5 and potentially more than RAID 6 depending on the amount of disks/spans and which disks fail. Rebuild times are also significantly less as it’s a copy operation.
@adlerweb
@adlerweb 4 года назад
…but also costs significantly more.
@northernaurora_
@northernaurora_ 4 года назад
The benefit outweighs the cost on a production system for performance and resilience. Ok for a lab but I wouldn't put anything I care about on RAID 5. If cost is a major concern there are other solutions such as ZFS which don't require large amount of RAM for smaller pools.
@adlerweb
@adlerweb 4 года назад
@@northernaurora_ Guess everyone has their own way of doing it. I myself also use ZFS in various flavors for most arrays and try to avoid hardware RAID controllers (got bitten 2 times by firmware bugs causing an empty disk being replicated to the whole array after changing a failed one. Also recovery for failed controllers is a PITA if you have to match firmware revisions first). The DC we're buying off-site space from is an IBM/Lenovo shop and follows their SAN-recommendations which is (or was about last year) RAID50.

Really odd choice of drives. Why so low capacity? I guess you got them for free but even then the electricity costs are going to offset that quite a bit. What's the situation with electricity on a datacenter, do you meter it or do you charge a flat fee per slot on a rack assuming x amount of wattage? Also where do you get those cheap drives and aren't you worried about reliability? A couple failing at once could kill the array. if it's a lab server maybe it won't run 24/7 and you don't really care about the data on it to answer my questions...

hmmm... When creating a raid 5/6 , you should really select advanced settings and change the stripe size to something suitable. For VM's ,file servers and stuff 512KB would be good, but for email servers, www servers and small storage 256KB is more suitable. Also , relying on BBU is bad incase of raid5. Lads - maybe stop with the reckless design decisions here. Its 2019 not 1999. ESXi loads into RAM so there is virtually no point wasting drives on this. Just boot off a MicroSD card or USB key. Then please dont encourage people to use parity RAID for storage with spinning disks. One big RAID 10 if you have spinning disks. I know the disks you have are small and probably enterprise URE of 10*15 but someone here is going to copy the RAID5 suggestion with some cheapo SATA drives and end up killing their storage when it re-silvers and hits a URE
