Dative case in Russian is not that difficult. From Zero to Fluency continues with lesson 22. We talk about how endings change in Dative case; in what situations we use Dative in Russian, and of course we practice speaking at the end of the lesson.

Way back in the eighties I used to (had to) learn Russian (that was common in the 'Eastern Block'). I can still remember there were some kind of magazines with a thin blue foil record of simple songs and nursery rhymes in each of them; we used to listen to those almost every lesson. As I remember all of us hated it (I mean learning Russian); then came '89-90, and everybody suddenly turned to West, schools had ceased teaching, even people did not want to have anything to do with Russian any more. (So was I.) It was only in the recent past that I badly started to regret it. And there is some sort of weird coincidence: I was just listening to a song with the title 'Daria', my sons were looking for some T-34 video, and YT had these lessons among the recommendations. I have just had my leg broken so I really do have time, and clicked on it, and what a good decision it was! Daria, You have extraordinary proficiency and a killing sense of humour - I wish I had had this kind of teacher back when I had to learn the language - but I am really happy to have stumbled upon Your channel. Congrats!

And lastly a very Happy New Year's to you and your family. Looking forward to the new lessons. Reviewing all my notes to catch up. One of my New Year's resolution is to concentrate more on Russian studies tenaciously. Although I did not come online much till now, I did refer to my notes once in awhile to keep current. I don’t know if it’s already been mentioned in the comments. dative case is not twisted in Russian as you say: Italian, French, Spanish, German express the action of liking something with the dative case. But I think that expressing this concept in English is much more reasonable and direct.

Hello there, and thank you for your wonderful channel, and for all your work for so many years. There is one methodological thing, however, that I regret. I don't understand why, when introducing a new case, you always started with the tables and endings. It seems to me that students need to know what the teacher is talking about first, before s/he gives them practical rules, exceptions, consequences and results. Why not explaining first what nominative, prepositional, accusative, dative mean, with very simple and clear examples; and then get to the nitty-gritty of the case?
@franduma1
@franduma1 10 месяцев назад
I noticed that a lot of cases-teaching contents on internet actually are not explaining or illustrating what the case at study is. The first thing to explain cases and make persistent their application through the lesson should be to put up illustration phrases right at the beginning, as a contextual foundation. Minimally should be to take time giving a couple of phrases to refresh the context in which the case may apply. Those example phrases should be there right at the beginning, otherwise there is no point. Lessons should be self-contained and not reliant on past communication. They should be completetly auto-explanatory in themselves even if for brief mentions.

Re #2: In English, this would be the indirect object-the person for whom or to whom the action is done. Examples: I gave money to my friend and I did a favor for his sister. “Friend” and “sister” are indirect objects and would be in the dative case. BTW, “money” and “favor” are direct objects because they answer the question “who?” or “what?” after the verb. (The word you were looking for on the cow is the udder.)😊
@bobgurske3453
@bobgurske3453 Год назад
Caution: some verbs like “to listen (to)” take the accusative case after the verb. Я слушаю радио. I listen to the radio.
