Need to check the head and engine block surface for flatness. Might need to get the head milled and possibly the block. I would also get a set of ARP head studs and a MLS head gasket.

Could well be the problem but I think it's cast iron head and block so fingers crossed!

Hoping there ok as didn’t have time to do anything about it. The head was skimmed last year so that should still be good. Fingers crossed the block is also!! If I do again I’m definitely going to try and source a better gasket in the uk.

5:05 Running a chase tape through the block head stud mounting holes, will ensure proper torque reading when cylinder head is installed.

I should of zoomed in for that shot as it’s not very clear. Your right but that isn’t a head bolt he is putting in but a tap to chase the threads 👍

Seems like the 620 is starting to be a bit of a money pit.But lucky your in Thailand where parts and labour aren't to expensive.Can you imagine the cost in a western country.

Hahahaha it certainly feels like that sometimes!!! Your right though everything here's a fraction of the price of back home. If it was in the UK I would have run out of money a long time ago!!!

Sand the head on glass with 220 grit. Use a machinist stone to rub the block smooth.

There seems to be quite a build up of oil on the valve surfaces on a few cylinders in the head, I think you did the valve stem seals last time you re-did the head . And looking at the carbon line on the bore maybe the oil control rings are gummed up or stuck . Since your sponsored by liquid moly maybe throw some of there oil flush into the oil , and pore some into the bores and let it leak though the rings over night before the next oil change. That gasket seemed to have dissolved like cardboard , no wonder it failed . Hope the good old A series is once again reliable .

I'm no expert but I think it's a J15. But I could well be wrong. Cheers

That’s quite possible!! There was more build up than I was expecting considering I’d only done around 5000 miles since we rebuilt the head last time. Is the engine flush stuff any good? I wish they’d sponsor me the amount of oil I go through!! I agree that gasket was awful!! That’s the trouble out here in Thailand. The aftermarket car parts market is flooded with really low quality Chinese copies. Imported parts from Japan are much harder to find. So the guys always try and use a good second hand part. But this is getting harder as these parts get older.

Yep j15 for Datsun 620s outside of America although I’m not sure of the differences between the J and A series

@@missioncapri > looking again at the video at 4.00 you can see the difference on how every cylinder is running . Top of the screen cylinder is flooded with oil to the point that you see the carbon has started to be blown off from detonation on the sharp edge of the squish area of the head combustion chamber . Second and third cylinder chamber is about the same . Also looking at the spark plug electrode , once again the oil is causing detonation ( maybe mark the plugs and index them next time you install them also ) . Also wonder if those guys have ever changed the plug heat range as a exercise to see if there is any improvement . Due to your comment on the amount of oil the engine uses and the obvious signs in the head I don't think you have anything to lose from attempting one of the many ways to hopefully improve the ring sealing . Quality oil flush stuff is proven to do something , cheap crap will most likely do nothing . There are tons of videos on the internet about the piston ring soak method , mostly all used on VW's and AUDI's that have chronic oil burning issues. I have done it on my 160.000 mile daily driver vertical bored ( stupid FoMoCo idea ) six cylinder Polestar , I spotted the fuel consumption wasn't what it once was . I seemed to have dropped back to normal after so must have done something in sealing the rings once again. As Bung ( hope thats how your spell his name ) was revving the engine trying to unblock the gummed up carby ( from the fuel going old whilst you didn't use the truck ) I guess there wasn't clouds of oil smoke ? that would suggest that it also isn't from the valve stem seals as the increase in manifold vacuum with his hand blocking air flow would have instantly sucked the oil passed the valve stem seals worst than any modern Mitsubishi engine oil burner .

Thanks for the detailed knowledge. Will definitely help in understanding what’s going on!! We changed to hotter plugs about 1000km ago and it seemed to run better. It definitely started easier. I’ll give the oil flush a go soon, it’s worth a shot!! Ball( it is pronounced like you said though as Thais don’t always pronounce the letter L) did a compression test the other day and it was ok but definitely on the low side. That’s correct no oil smoke when he was trying to flush the carb so as you say head should be ok.

Hahaha I just complain a little bit to make you guys feel better back home! Yeh I can’t believe how good of a match the paint was. Really happy with how it came out. I did think about painting my truck the same grey as that other truck but have grown fond of the blue on mine!

Did your 620 come with AC? If not where did you get the bracket for the compressor?
@missioncapri
@missioncapri 8 месяцев назад
Yes it came with the AC already. I’ve seen a few guys out here with the same bracket. Try Google ‘Datsun 1500 ac bracket Lazada’ . I think that’s the one
