Good to see this... I never saw these DA videos when they were current. Dave fell between the cracks of carefully formatted radio and wouldn't stay pigeonholed. Any minute now, I expect to him to be an overnight success.
Dave wrote this song with George Jones in mind. He felt it was a good one for the Possum to sing and hoped he'd record it. Sent it George's way and after awhile received a response that Jones was going to do it. Happy ending. He later heard back from George's 'people', turns out he was not going to record it after all. Why? They said the song was "too country" for George Jones. Not so happy ending after all. What's that about?
Luv Joe Eli. Saw concert. Have Love and Danger, an epic album in which he covered Every Night. But when Dave Alvin puts his heart in it, with that slide, steel, lap guitar of Greg Leisz's, it blows my stuff away. He's old school, does not have a superstar appearance, does not have the massive Willie outlaw posse (Alvins band, very good). Released initially in UK, 1987, album title Every Night About This Time with Demon Records. /// /// US pick up by Epic records, 1987, under title Romeo's Escape. A later German pressing also.
