This is the video of the drums on the master take, from the project 'Play' by Dave Grohl. I do not own any of the copyrights of the song. All credits go to the artist and respective label.
He’s not even playing to a ghost track or with a metronome. The melodies, accents, the changes and timing. It’s all in his head! That’s incredible! I’ve listened to the first Foos album again recently and I’m still amazed that he played everything on it. He has to be one of the greatest rock musicians ever. A legend for sure.
Many drummers can physically play this but nobody on this planet can do it the way Dave does. The combination of subtlety, clarity, precision and power he plays with is unbelievable. I'm glad he is who inspired me to play drums. I feel blessed to have learned how to play by watching him because the bar couldn't be any higher.
This is what you get the when the drummer writes the music. Every note means something. Every snare crash and bass drum has a meaning. It's glorious to watch.
I really have to work harder on my weaknesses ! Man ,I am still in 8th grade and Dave is through university, if you know what I mean ? I have so much trouble getting all of my limbs doing something different at the same time .
It's almost as if he hears the music as drums first, and then uses the guitar as a drum with more range and notes. His guitar is so rhythmic and the accents are perfect.
Dave Grohl is the perfect rock drummer. Solid, hits hard, never over plays, locks right in to the music and propels it forward while staying in the pocket. He knows exactly where to accent to make rock just that much harder. He's definitely one of the the greats.
I'm back again. There are times when I just have to spend a good half hour listening to Dave playing the drums. Next to Neil Peart, Dave Grohl is just incredibly awesome... could listen to him for hours.
Never thought he recorded it in one take. That's even more impressive than playing all the instruments and the composition itself. I don't think people understand how hard that is.
Iszil Most folks who play all the instruments are able to do it in one take. While I don't write as well as he does, I play all the instruments on my recordings and I usually do them no problem in one take.
He said he has never had a single drum lesson & that he just plays them how he "thinks" they are supposed to be played,I just love this guy,as a drummer & a person!
@gdubsie4 At a Foos show I saw some years back, they did an acoustic set including a violin player and some additional percussion. At some point, they pointed out that only the violin player and the triangle player could read music. It did make me feel so much better! And the triangle guy did a kick-ass rock triangle solo.
@@DaveHaynie think that’s now changed with the permanent addition of Shiflett, Dave said recently "he's the only proper musician in the band" or something along those lines, as he can read music and understands the technical structure
Guys......really? Its ok when you like what he plays, but he is NOT a "master" drummer at all. Thìs is just slightly beyond generic kit bashing. Hitting hard doesn t make him a master. Not even in hitting hard.
Pep - In this video is metric modulation, odd-time signatures, numerous different rudiments, and lots of dynamics. Are we even watching the same video?
This dude has evolved so freaking much further than his peers. Just continues to improve his skill sets. I'm not a huge fan of FF, but I have tremendous respect for Mr. Grohl. Awesome post!
@@foskco87 Taylor is the Fill Master...and yeah, Dave is definitely a huger basher...but otherwise pretty similar...think Dave helped get Taylor to where he is today...just mho...shit amateur drummer here...lol
zeeOgre I agree with u 1000%. Dave loves music and it shows as he, IMHO, is an extremely talented drummer as well as a very good guitarist. Dedication, persistence, patience, and most of all thousands of hours practice is the only way to get where he is at.
In my opinion, Dave sounds really good here. I had a random playlist that started with Sonny Emory, then went to Weckl, then Buddy, Charly, Gadd, Vinnie etc. I wasn't watching the video (I was working and had my phone in my pocket playing to a Bluetooth speaker) When this clip started it caught my ear. Never would've guessed it was Grohl. He is forever a student of the art. Love it!
Any chance you guys could check out remix of this song using Dave's drums? I added my own new parts over his tracks. Just click my name to see it on my page. I"d really appreciate it!
Seeing this makes me want to show it to all students of the instrument as a study in groove and subtlety. Yes he goes balls to the wall at times but it all fits. The groove is not lost during the flashy parts, instead it’s reinforced. Too many drummers are all speed during a solo and it sounds like a car accident, or they don’t know when to lay back, be in the pocket, then lead when needed. Just super tasty fills on here that fit fine. A driving rhythm without monotony. Every roll or fill propels the music forward, fitting together like a super glued Jenga puzzle. Learning, evolving, growing. Two thumbs way up!
Being a bass player for many many years the problem with most drummers that can't distinguish play with power yet remain clean, distinctive and supportive to root the foundation. There's simply few drummers that ebb and flow without losing feel, power, and dynamics of the music. I have almost took my bass off and slammed it over a drummer's head because of overplaying and chaotic playing!
I think that's a great idea that would help your students tremendously. I'm a guitar player wanted some wonder pieces of this caliber but I'm not a drummer and logic drum don't have this groove and feel. Makes me want to learn to count.
Dave once said in a interview that he hated click tracks but was forced by the producer or record company to record the album with click tracks felt it hugely improved his drumming.
Kids under 40 (45?) may forget that when Dave first appeared on the scene in Nirvana circa 1991 he took indie rock music to a whole new level with his drumming precision and power. No one else imho does triplets on the toms like Dave. Always makes me smile! You can tell he studied John Bonham hard.
dave also played in a band called scream out of DC ( check out the lp "no more censorship) and really shined on drums. he was doing stuff with 1 pedal and triplets on toms that was just so inspirational at the time for me.
@@StevenJamesBurks Of course, Steve J. Burks aka the gospel drummer would obviously do a better job.... His playing is quite complex at time and very creative, you should try to play the whole thing in one take without any mistakes, then you come back and say whatever you want... Gospel? really? Lmfao!!!! *why won't you post one of your own video so we can compare a bit?
Love this.. The last 5 minutes BLOW THE MIND. All the subtle changes to the riffs alone deserves a trophy. Albums with "movements' need to make a comeback. I hear vocals ALL OVER THIS
There is a lot nerdy drummers that are known to be the top drummers, but Dave is a top drummer that also has something that the others are missing. FEEL!!
Have listened to this many times already and keep hearing new subtle things I didn’t catch before. It’s really an amazing piece. It’s incredible that after so many years and all his success that Dave still has this level of drive for music and the creative process.
there's alot of drummer who want to prove to the world who is the best with signatures, tones, trademarks, skills and there's who love to create good music.
They’re not mutually exclusive. A 2mins search on RU-vid will find you better drummers than grohl. It’s just a fact no matter you want to talk about “pocket” “groove” “good music”
hats off to the engineers! and of course to Dave for writing the song and providing the opportunity for the sound to be captured in the way that it was. Fantastic!
It’s a life’s goal to get to share a stage with this guy someday. Or even just sit down and jam with him. Seriously has been one of my favorite musicians since 1991.
Half of them are probably from his own family. Many of them are drummers and they're competitive. I'm not a drummer, but at the time this was recorded cinematography was my profession. This man... He made me sit across from him in this room as this video was recorded. He didn't want me on camera or anything, I just had to sit there, and he filmed it "himself"(meaning he got professional help setting everything up and planning it out, but was hoping I wouldn't find out. He tried to tell me he shouldn't have to pay me much for my work because "he can just film himself". My colleague, who had been hiding behind a one way window in the wall right behind me with a remote to control the camera, came out after hearing this discussion and handed him the bill right in front of me, ending the ruse. Dave asked "why would you do that, she's your competition?' My colleague responded "Actually we're a team, so I can bill you for both of our time you took up for this video.") Then, after he uploaded the video to youtube, I showed it to a bunch of the fam that were over at the house. The conversation went as follows: Me: Do you see what your dad made me sit through? And he didn't even have me film it, I just had to sit there. For NO reason. Anonymous Male relative: [sees the video length] A whole half hour? He's gone too far... Me: And do you know he's in the latest Bill and Ted movie? He ruined the Bill and Ted franchise! [We shot some scenes for the movie] Anonymous Male relative: He has to be stopped!!! (We all sit and watch this entire video, huddled around my phone) Anonymous Male relative: That was terrible, what was he thinking? Taylor Hawkins: I am so much better than him. Anonymous Male relative: Everybody is. a daughter: [runs off... to tell on us] (Several minutes later) Dave: You didn't like the video? But it came out so good. Me: [gives him a dirty look] Taylor: [chuckles] nah... Anonymous Male relative: ...I'm better. Daughter, to the drummers in the room: My daddy's a rich rock star. You're just jealous! (apparently unaware of anyone else's status in the room) My colleague: Don't get too excited, we'll see how rich he is after he pays all of us for our work. (motions to everyone in the room except for the daughter) And I know a lot more people that he owes money to besides us. Daughter: [pouts and runs off] Taylor: Does she really not know I'm famous too? Dave: You're not famous. Taylor: Yes I am! Google me right now. Dave: That doesn't mean anything. Taylor: [angrily pushes his chair in] He's such a jerk. Anonymous Male relative: I know man. Taylor: [walks away mad] 😆 I guarantee you the drummers in the room called everyone they know and told them to dislike this video.
You can admire the feeling and mastery of music only with visual: amazing! The sound is so controled too, not very complex compositions but what control in sound and feeling especially with no big mistakes, in one shot (that's not how studio works in general!)! That's really how good rock works: not very complex but very mastered gestures, a bit like dance: it's very obvious when you look at this performance, EVEN IN A STUDIO! Here I can remember Bonham, Paice, Appice, Krupa: it is this high family of soul drummers. By the way very well composed.
Sometimes it's good to see things like this. To remind us just how incredible of a drummer Dave is. And artist. Just amazing work. I get so caught up in the Foo I forget sometimes.
@@ldiegosousa Some people never followed Nirvana back in the day so they may not know who he is and only got to know him from Foo Fighters. I was like, what the hell, is he now going to play ''guitar and sing?'' after I knew him as an amazing punk and later grunge rock drummer. Also some millenials may not even know there was a Nirvana group that literally made history and created the whole generation of musicians coming from the nineties.
Dave, thanks a lot for your great music. It's not only doing the thing you feel: it's much more than that. It helpes my being inspired and "learn to fly" ...
This was amazing!! Great to see Dave where he belongs - behind the kit! I heard Nirvana, Rush, and it was pretty heavy stuff! And the best part was the triple drumset transition - that was so dang cool!!! Dave rocks big time! And you won't break your leg playing drums, dude!
If I still had a drum kit, I think it’s safe to say this would be the one I practice most. (I do it on the air/knees kit; that counts for now). Love you Dave, and beyond grateful for this masterpiece. I quietly hope there’s more, but I’ll take this over none any day of the week. Love and gratitude and all the good stuff your way!!
Small addition, and I may have posted this on your other upload, I can’t help wondering if Dave is giving his younger self some love by making this. Does anyone know if Dave had a kit when he was a little kid. 11:11 sort of looks like he’s sitting at it. Ok, ok, shutting up again.
I watch this once every few weeks.. I am amazed every time..Dave is so incredibly talented. And drug free too. Much respect. Inspiring to say the least.
