this is pretty much the best frickin' synth overview anybody could ever hope to watch. bravo, joey!! rest in peace, dave smith..... thanks much for all the great works.
Evolver is DSI/Sequential's genesis instrument where bits of it's DNA trickled into their later synths. Their most original too. It's stereo signal path and true hybrid voice architecture still make it desirable over their later offerings. They missed out big time by not offering a 20th anniversary version of Evolver.
Had the pleasure of being house audio engineer when experimental band Suuns came through my city. They had no less than 3 evolvers on stage and they sounded absolutely massive and threatening. Their engineer killed it too.
Sweet. Never heard the Suuns, but I shall take care of that shortly. Always loved reading bands live kit lists. That's what I miss most about magazines.
As a dad myself, I can relate to the “living childhood dreams with adult income” situation. But not just on vanilla synths. But now that you mention it, I should maybe also get a nice analog poly like the Prophet…
Blush, that machine is ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved it when i first tried and have no logical reason why I did not get it then..Imagine her with an Iridium and sampler!!!!!
Rad video and amazing work to show just even a small part of what this instrument is capable of. The MEK was my first synth and Joanne from DSI said she didn't have any left and so she sold me one from their studio / office, which Dave kept around for parts. I now have 8 DSI units and the Evolver is still my favorite. DSI hosted my wife and I at their studio several years ago and it was like touching the monolith. But yeah man, this synth is a wild one.... you have it under control for a minute and with a sharp turn of the dial, it just takes off and you go into sonic soundscapes that make you loose track of where you were and it takes you on a different path. It's all about having fun and man, this synth takes you where you want to go. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome! I recently sold my Evolver desktop to get the MEK and so happy I did. I've wanted one for years now. I learned a handful of very useful tips watching your video so thank you a ton for diving into this one. Always great to see how you twist and mangle a piece of gear so easily - its inspiring!
Owned this synth since it came out. Upgraded to encoders. Have the same MIDI cable as 'ol boy up there. Love this unit in every way... except... I really wish they revisited the sequencer. It is annoying to work with. No way to globally ignore the auto start. And not every note should start at C0. Otherwise, this thing constantly amazes me after all this time. Honored to have met Dave Smith at NAMM a few years back.
I'm a dad yet I love my MEK to bits. It is so unashamedly, disgustingly dirty it... It often gives me goosebumps that feel like a rash. Strangely enough, ALL the other Sequential synths to me sound too tame to get even a little bit excited about.
finally got to crack open a desktop evolver i picked up a few years back and i am so so psyched to be spending my time with it. those three delays easily become choruses and flangers with so many modulation possibilities, and my god those digital oscillators get into some crushed out aliased-ass squelchy belchy places. i was so close to giving up on it because of the tedium and that bad segmented display, but it's forced me to use it standalone and lean into that bonkers analog sequencer. don't miss on the external input too. this thing can mangle anything you send into it esp since you've got the envelope follower and input peak mod sources, not to mention the input hack and the fact you can switch in the distortion before or after the filter
I'd love to get a Soundtower importing waveforms tutorial, I've had one fore over a decade and for as long as I'm making sounds I'll always own some version of this circuit.
Miss my MEK. The synths I regret selling the most were especially DSI MEK but also Waldorf XTK and Roland JX-3P. I'd be quite happy with those as a setup now. I still wouldn't trade it for current setup, The raw sound of the DSI Take 5 is nicer than the MEK. Hydrasynth keyboard or Elektron Digitone are both much more flexible and mostly sound better than likable but grungy Waldorf XTK. And Novation Peak, on some things JX-3P had edge, but for most things Peak is better. The build quality of the more recent synths is better too, apart from the JX-3P which holds it's own against the Peak, though the JX-3P is a PITA in others ways (MIDI, control, portability, weight, polyphony, voice architecture, reliability etc...).
How brilliant would it be for Sequential to re-introduce this basically full stereo path monosynth? Pick one (or maybe two) of the filters from Pro 3 instead of the Curtis and it would be perfect.
I have a pro 2, and it can get this kind of thing, except it doesn't have the stereo oscillators, but has the stereo delay X4, and some other tricks. you got some insane sounds going on, and seems this was purpose built for the hard edge, and the Pro 2 is more below the surface. With the pro 2 its got the AM/FM with linear or exponential options, and just a tiny bit of that added , makes its sssuuuppper harsh and brittle. the downside of the randomization in the Sound Tower app, is that it always ads FM, so you have to go in and pull it back. anyway. that thing sounds killlllleerrrr. but after listening to the entire vid, it does have a different overall sound.
