In this episode of Tuna on Toast, Ted Stryker welcomes Davey Havok to the Tuna On Toast studio to celebrate life and 30 years of AFI in this in depth and fun interview.
For this episode, it's the Avocado on Toast studio :)
Stryker and Davey cover so much ground, from AFI, Blaqk Audio and Dreamcar, to funny late night Hollywood stories and a ton more!
Davey tells Stryker how he injured his throat during quarantine, what the diagnosis eventually was, and how it's healed.
The guys talk about the big New Years Eve Blaqk Audio Show coming up and Davey actually surprises Stryker with his answer to the question about Blaqk Audio rehearsals (or lack thereof). He explains how he and Jade Puget get ready for their BA shows.
Davey tells Stryker a great story of his Katy Perry encounter including a situation that went down at her show when Davey was rocking a beautiful raspberry red Marc Jacobs suit.
Davey then explains to Stryker why he constantly creates, where that passion comes from, and what album he received for his 5th birthday.
Davey discusses with Stryker growing up in Ukiah with guys like Adam Carson, Jade and Nic 13 and the life journey that took him there.
Davey tells another great and funny story about the time he met Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii.
Davey and Stryker talk about when AFI moved to Berkeley, and the first time playing 924 Gilman Street and jumping on stage to play a few songs during a Rancid show.
Stryker and Davey then discuss early AFI albums and what the legendary concert booker Stormy Shepherd told Davey when he asked her to book AFI.
Both Stryker and Davey attempt to recall a night many years ago in Hollywood that involved supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and the very fun Chambers Brothers.
Davey talks about meeting with and signing to a major label and what that experience was like.
The guys chat about the All Hallow's EP, the Total Immortal video, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and decemberunderground and what the avalanche of success was like.
Davey and Stryker also chat about Dreamcar and the possibility of creating more music with Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont.
Davey reveals to Stryker his favorite AFI album and the guys talk about the upcoming AFI bodies tour.
The new AFI merch (some designed by Skinhead Rob Aston) is fantastic, be on the lookout for the different releases to celebrate 30 years of AFI.
So much ground was covered, the above text are just a few of the highlights of the interview.
Davey is such a powerful and sweet man that has always stuck to his guns.
He is a true artist and a great dude. Thank you so much for watching this episode of Tuna on Toast.....Avocado on Toast.

I would love more Dreamcar too. Even if it can't exist furthermore under full LPs and it's the occasional song or EP. Granted music is something that everyone has a different opinion on, but I prefer Dreamcar to AFI's discography following Crash Love, and near the entirety of Blaqk Audio - which debatably exists now as a passion project than a commercially vial outlet.

I ran into Davey back around October at a show in Los Angeles and chatted with him for a good ten minutes or so. He's such a sweetheart. I asked him about Son of Sam and if there would be any possibility working with at least Steve Zing and London May again, to which he said that he wouldn't feel comfortable pursuing again since Todd Youth was the main songwriter for that project. He then went on to tell me that the artwork for the album was supposed to be completely different from the gal that we got..I think he mentioned it was supposed to be a man with goat legs? Pretty much an evil Faun. Either way, as another user mentioned, it's so awesome to hear him talk of that project nearly 21 years later. Perhaps the first time he's mentioned it on video? I could be wrong.

28:10 So interesting to hear him discuss "winning and losing". I'm exactly the same and I've always felt like I've been alone in that mindset. Of course I enjoy success and happiness, but I've also found it a bit gross how American culture is so hung up on "winning". Or if you lose something you're a complete failure. Some people turn everything in to a game of winning. Not just sports and things of that nature. My view was different as a child, but as I matured I began to find it a bit gross how so many people put so much stock in "winning". So it's really interesting to hear Davey relates to that mindset as well.

@@hernanmontenegro5462 why does AFI not like Nitro then?
@hernanmontenegro5462
@hernanmontenegro5462 Год назад
@@phoenix21studios Because Nitro never supported them in their direction changes. When they released Black Sails they were told they didn't understand the record. They never put up any money to promote the band and when a big label shows up to give them a chance, Nitro made sure they made a lot of money and they forced a bid of offers from which Nitro was the beneficiary, not AFI. There are many stories of this style where an "Indie" label that does little for its artists fills their pockets when a "big company" appears.

I got an AFI tat in 2003. First seen you guys at the Gilman in like 1996. I would LOVE to talk to Davey for a sec, I grew up with Billy and Mike from Green Day in Rodeo,Ca. Used to watch em in BJs garage practice when I was little,my older brother was good friends with BJ Mike and John. Anyways, later, around 1996, my punk band at the time was leaving Guitar Center when it was located in Berkeley I think on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, and I had a homemade hoodie patched with a Green Day shirt, a cut out from a shirt I sewed onto a hoodie, and my band walked by another group of young dudes as they were headed into the Guitar Center, and one of em mouthed off,I believe it was Davey, and he said after he snickered," Green Day..pffft..sellouts.." lmao I got PISSED and was about to go knock him out cuz I was a firecracker back then and I had nothing but love for Green Day cuz BJ and Mike were really good to me as a little kid while my brother and his other friends all bullied me,Mike and BJ NEVER did. So I still support Green Day and love em.anyways, my band grabbed me and kept me from going and punching Davey,lol, and they said, "Do you know who that was??!!" I said, "no..should I??" They said," Afi..." I had JUST started getting into punk that yr,had been a metalhead since I was a toddler tho. Anyways, I doubt Davey remembers that. Now I have a tat of em on me and I've been a huge fan of AFI since that yr, 1996. I damn near lived at the Gilman for a few yrs. I was also in a big Bay Area punk band called Subincision briefly at that time. And my other punk band used to practice next to BJ's moms house in Rodeo. I also havr stories of Les Claypool,hanging with Jason Newsted in Rasputin music in Concord,Ca. Meeting Tre Cool on Telegraph Ave randomly one day, Metallica used to buy weed off my friends uncle in the 80s and their garage was down the street from my dad's shop in El Cerrito,CA. Talked to Mike Patton on the phone in 1991, was apparently friends with my friend Ray's sister, etc etc. Rob Halford came out to see my band Subincision at the Gilman one night, I have stories for yrs...the Bay Area in thr 80s and 90s was the grestest place on earth for punk and metal. ALWAYS ran across famous bands in Berkeley and S.F. etc. Even Pusshead that did Metallicas artwork lived down the street from my grandma. Wish I could shoot the shit with Davey for a few about ahit back then and if he remembers that incident,lol

I used to be like that as a teen and my early 20’s especially in my teens when I found out Clive Barker wrote more than just visceral horror. It hated change, but as I’ve gotten older I find change more interesting especially with Davey having done different musical styles and his influences and such. Doing the same thing to me is so boring and stagnant. But yeah AFI never ceases to amaze me with each album having a different flavor.

It's so cool hearing about the long history of AFI from Davey himself and he's such an eloquent personable guy. I just got done watching the '96 Fireside Bowl Chicago live show on BlankTV channel as well

I remember being 13 and skateboarding all my friends were listening to Pantera and slayer but I always was listening to AFI, theyd all make fun of me lmao. The energy I'd get from the music I would skate from dusk til dawn lol I still love singing along! The music also got me through my teenage years I thank you for making such amazing music im still a huge fan!!!! Also I'm 40 now and my youngest is a fan as well, I catch her working out and listening to days of the phoenix and much more lol

I used to work with Ukiah USD (tangentially), and I have seen "the Tri" where the band started at the high school. The guy that I used to work with there was familiar with them, and it's a trip now knowing that Nick 13 is from there too.

I think Davey is one of the most eloquent and interesting people of all time. 🖤 my best gal and I saw Dreamcar in AZ in the very beginning and it was packed and so much fun. I got to see them again at a festival and it was just such a experience.

Great interview. My first time seeing AFI was when they opened up for Dance Hall Crashers & No Use For A Name. Mid 90’s. Wanna say 96-97. I was hooked.

Those were great times and we didnt even realize it at the time, I saw them in late 95 when they were basically unknown. Tiny grange hall in Nevada City with maybe 30 people there at most. Moshing with Davey and the rest of the band for 2 hours straight. Afterwards they hung out with everyone BS'ed, and signed stuff

Out of all the bands I have followed and all the front men or women I have admired, Davey is my all-time favorite. So genuine, unassuming, kind, friendly and a pleasure to watch and listen to. Not forgetting to mention, a talented creative genius.
