Showing a runner fifty feet from where the contact occurred isn’t proof of anything
@FUGP72
@FUGP72 11 месяцев назад
The only thing it proved was that he doesn't know the rules that he is whining like a bitch about, and neither do you. It is NOT interference until the ball is at the runner. Making that picture WORTHLESS. And he knew it. He didn't print out the picture from 1:37 in this video since it would prove it was the RIGHT call (as the league office said after reviewing the play after the game. It is only interference if the runner is out of the lane WHEN THE BALL HITS HIM. And the ball was NOWHERE NEAR him or the first baseman in that picture. Nor at 1:37 when the runner has already put on foot on the baseline, making him legal. And by the time the ball hits him, he was either already ON the base, or was about an inch or two away from putting his foot down. At that point, he not only has the right to be in fair territory, but he HAS TO BE.. Can't touch first base if you are in foul territory.

He didn't have anything ... Yes the runner started on the grass but look at his position when the ball made contact.. He is directly on top of the baseline. My suggestion for a fix, besides actually calling it interference every time, is for MLB to borrow from recreational softball: make first base double size, with half in foul territory (they're also separate colors). A runner running to first base has to use the foul half, while the first baseman (or pitcher if he's covering) has to use the fair half. Not only would this enhance safety, cutting down on spiking and collisions, but the runner would then naturally head slightly more to the right, since they'll be moving toward the half of the base in foul territory.
@cjcable6995
@cjcable6995 Год назад
I’ve never gotten why they don’t do this? They supposedly made the base change this year for safety. Why not do that too? Make sure it is same size on fair side to control length of base path. But you can extend it much further into foul territory where the running lane is.

On the one hand, I can definitely see and agree with purely judgement calls, such as whether or not it's interference, is not being reviewable. On the other hand, when it comes to the factual parts, such as where the batter was running, did he go past the base, and so on, I think that part should be reviewable, to determine "he wasn't in the line", then after that's determined, then gather up, discuss, and decide on whether or not it should be interference.
@MaxHasBeenUsed
@MaxHasBeenUsed Год назад
I don't think that's how things work. You don't want another group of umps judging every call those umps called, it will make the game extremely dull. Think about it this way: if every call is reviewable, you would ask to review every close call that gives you disadvantages. Because umps are supposed to make calls, they are supposed to explain what's happening on the field. What we want is to fire those umps that constantly making mistakes.

You have another official watching all of the cameras in a booth (sort of like the review team currently used in MLB) who can simply communicate with the on-field umpires and notify them when an incorrect call is made. This negates the need for either team to appeal the call.

They also mic the referee in rugby, and the mic remains on for the duration of the game. Yes, even when not making a call. Yeah rule is terrible. Either make the runner out for running in the grass, or don’t. Making him out only if he gets PLUNKED, AFTER running on the grass is counterintuitive and dangerous. Because the runners always get plunked after they’re off the grass, and are in the correct place about to step in the bag. It’s rewarding the catcher for plunking them after the fact, at a point where the runner isn’t really interfering anymore.

I think they should tweak the rule since its unnatural for a right handed hitter to run over to the "runner lane" especially on a hit where he's trying to hustle down the line. Yes he was on the grass but by the time the catcher threw the ball he was already on the dirt and on the foul line. So rule should be "runner can't deliberately run in front of a thrown ball or change direction to be in the path of a thrown ball"
@holyknightthatpwns

To be fair, the runner doesn't necessarily know where the ball is going to be thrown. In this case it looks like the 1st baseman expects to call to go to the runner's left, and the judgement call on the runner's part would be difficult to evaluate. It's much clearer to have a place where you're allowed to be, and punish people for not being in that place

Normally there would be no excuse for the ump to miss what he missed, but he had a play at the plate, and even 4-person mechanics can't cover everything. This is why they have 6-person mechanics in big games. I don't know 6-person mechanics, but I assume the right field umpire would help with this call in this specific situation because the home and first umpires are busy doing other things. Only RF ump would have the time and ability and angle to see the whole run from crack of the bat to first base.

So if it's 9th inning or later, any close/potentially controversial play/call can be reviewed by the booth and relayed to the ump on the field - *any* play. Guaranteed that one gets overturned and they go to extra innings....where the Nats would probably lose anyway, but at least it wasn't an ump screw job.

It was the right call. Plain and simple. He touched the base line one step BEFORE the throw hit him, and was coming down on first base (by definition REQUIRING him to be in fair territory) when it hit him. Jimmy - I know you don't like this rule but it is there for a reason. If this rule didn't exist then a really good strategy would be for players to bunt the ball towards third base and then run WAY WAY inside on the infield to try and get in the way of the throw to first. In fact before this rule was added back in the late 1800's that is exactly what players did. So this rule was added to prevent batters from doing that and give the defense a fair chance at retiring the batter.

I remember the first time I learned about this rule. I was playing on a U16(I think?) team, and it was in the last inning of the game. I had started at catcher, and the coach let the backup catcher play the last 2 innings or so, so I was the 1st base coach at the time. It was a close game, and a play just like this happened(we were at bat obviously), and the umpire called the hitter/runner out when the ball, thrown from the catcher, hit him in the back. My coach _flipped_ out, and eventually got kicked out if the game. The funny thing was, just a few days later, there was a similar play in a Red Sox game(I believe in the playoffs? I don't know) where the umpire also called the runner/hitter out, and my dad and the other parents had a good laugh about that at the next game(on behalf of my coach.)

There's one major difference between the WS play and this play. In this play the HP umpire first had to watch home plate to see the force out at home and signal that the runner from third was out. Then once that play was done the HP ump could turn his head to see if there was interference at first. The problem is that because he first had to watch the force out at home he wasn't able to watch the batter running to first to see if he was in the runner's lane or not. On a Runner's Lane Interference play like this it is the HP umpire's responsibility to watch where the batter runs. The 1B umpire is watching for the play at first and the other 2 umpires are watching to make sure runners touch the other bases. So the problem on this play is that the HP umpire just has too many things to look at at the same time. He can't watch the force at home and also watch the runner running to 1B. I think the solution here is to allow replay review to review whether or not the runner was in the lane properly.

Having coached baseball for years AND having been an official for years, I understand how difficult each job is. That being said, why is it that officials like Angel Hernandez and several others face very little consequences when they miss calls. Davey Martinez will probably be fined for calling out an umpire in public. Fact of the matter is that he's correct. By not making the correct call, the umpire determined the outcome of the game. But what's worse, is that the officials cannot admit that they made a mistake. Instant replay was supposed to prevent things like this from happening. Instant replay is designed to assist in making sure that the rules of the game are being adhered to. Whether you agree with a specific rule or not..., it's a rule.
