Chris Van Vliet sat down with David Benoit, the son of Chris Benoit, for a rare interview about his life and the death of his father. He talked about what it was like when he heard the news of what had happened, who the police investigated, wanting to induct his father into the WWE Hall of Fame and wanting to wrestle under his father's name. Solomonster gives his thoughts on the interview and explains why, despite the fact that none of it is his fault, some of his goals are simply unrealistic.

It sounds like he's really trying to regain the narrative of his father's image by carrying on so much of what Chris did. He wants the music, he wants the tights, he wants the name even; he basically wants to redo his career. That's his way of still trying to cope with and make sense of the sins of his father. Obviously this is a bad idea, but I can't say I blame him for it.

I obviously don't know him, but I'd guess that he's a very conflicted man. The first thing that comes to most wrestling fans' minds when the hear the name "Benoit" is "That guy who killed his family." It's not "That relentlessly dedicated worker who dedicated his life to wrestling." I'm sure David wants to bring some honor back to the Benoit name. And I'd wager that that's the real reason he wants to become a wrestler. David Benoit can leave a positive mark on this world, even if it's on the oil rigs and not in the wrestling ring. My heart goes out to David. He sounds like a really nice guy with a clear love for the business. He’s a spitting image of his father and I cannot imagine the difficulty of carrying the burden of what his father did in his final days. It’s unfair and unfortunately for David to feel like he has to follow his father and continue or in this case, help wash some of the bad taste out of people’s mouths in regards to the Benoit family name. But if he seriously wants to become a wrestler, then more power to him. The sky’s the limit and if his passion is that strong, he has the right to get into the business. Now, unfortunately, he won’t get a fair chance from a lot of promotions because of who his father was and looking like him and that sucks. But I sympathize with David for wanting to pay some sort of tribute to his dad but at the same time, he should try to carve out his own legacy and do what’s best for himself more importantly. And I think we should give David that opportunity to stand out on his own, as his own man. Of course, he wants to honor his dad’s career and I’m sure it still hurts him that he can’t get over what his father did towards the end. But we should give David a chance to do himself and his family’s name some good and hopefully, we can support him for trying to at least carve his own path in life before judging him for wanting to pay some homage his dad/idol, more than anything.

RE: Him wrestling under a mask - I always thought it would be a good idea for him to wrestle as The Pegasus Kid under a mask. It would be a subtle nod to his father while also not having to wrestle under Benoit. Of course, that was back when I thought he was serious about wrestling. At this point, I think he just doesn't want to pay the dues and get the kind of training he needs to make his dream a reality. If he was serious, he wouldn't have left Lance Storm's academy and he would have at least started a career on the indies. Honestly, I think enough time has passed that if he actually DID build up a big enough name for himself, WWE would consider letting Benoit get inducted, but that would take years of him being a top dog in WWE and I doubt he'll even manage to get in Ring of Honor at this point.

I feel for him, but he'd have better luck creating his own Hall of Fame first. Even if by some miracle Vince and Triple H were okay with it, so many people who work for and with them would not be, and the fallout would be tremendous. You think people are leaving WWE for AEW now? To be fair, in this day and age, we get plenty of practice distancing people's crimes from their art. I can still watch the Cosby Show or listen to an R. Kelly song, I grew up on them, but I agree that the men themselves need to be in jail. But as far as I know, they didn't kill anyone. Certainly not their own families. It's just different with Benoit. Well, scratch that: it's worse. So everyone feels more strongly when the topic of looking the other way comes up. It's bad enough WWE did that with Jimmy Snuka. They really can't get in the habit of doing things like that. And the fact is there are more people associated with WWE that would be against it, rather than for it. They are not going to shoot themselves in the foot just to please David. They might quietly cut him a check to go away, but that's about it.

I also feel bad that if he truly does dream to wrestle that he will never get a fair shake simply because he looks like a clone of his father. But it’s also sad and/or concerning how he doesn’t seem able or willing to accept the realities that his dreams to wrestle as Chris Benoit jr or indict his dad just aren’t things that can happen. I’m hoping somebody does or has been willing to sit down with him and be real with him about those things because at some point as difficult as it has to be for him he needs to be able to accept those realities for what they truly are. It isn’t fair for him at all but he does eventually as an adult need to be able to accept what reality is otherwise it’ll continue to hurt him until he does. And as his family I’m not sure I’d want to see him go in because even if he did the focus would never be on truly honoring him and it would largely be unfulfilling as to what you dream it would be.

I agree with Chris Benoit never going into the Hall of Fame. Now, I'm not one of those pretentious, judgemental pricks who condemn him for his crimes when the situation's not that black and white. And if these naysayers don't want to watch footage of him and pretend there was nothing good about Chris simply because of the nature of how he died which didn't actually affect them in any way, that's their own loss. I don't defend him for what he did (I would've had him put away for life), but that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend the man never existed and that nothing good came from him. It's important to be respectful in regards to what happened, but ignoring what led Chris to do what he did as well as the positives he had to give in life and being judgemental accomplishes nothing. That being said, how can you possibly build up Chris' Hall of Fame induction with a video package, an induction speech and an acceptance speech as this big feel-good moment in front of thousands of people who would all be aware of what happened in his final days? It would just feel awkward and uncomfortable. It sucks for David, but he needs to understand this. And yeah, I agree - if he does too much to resemble his father (like he doesn't do that enough already without his father's attire and old theme music), he's going to lessen his chances of progression. Why can't he just be more of himself? Speaking of awkwardness, I don't think it's fair that Jimmy Snuka hasn't been treated the same way after he murdered his partner. I don't care that it came to light _after_ his Hall of Fame induction - he shouldn't be in there now or given any public mention any more than Chris should. Look at how the people reacted when the former's death was announced on Raw. Some applauded, some booed, and the rest didn't know how to react at all. It would be the exact same with Chris going into the Hall of Fame. For the sake of consistency and fairness, they either need to remove Jimmy Snuka and not publicly speak of him again, or they need to publicise Chris Benoit even if it goes as far as putting him in, because they can't just treat one murderer differently to another. Not that it matters to me that much when the legitimacy of the WWE Hall of Fame is questionable considering the process of people going in and there being no set criteria, but I do care about consistency and equality.

Feel bad for everything the kid has gone through. To see the man he saw as his biggest hero go down the road he went is tragic. It's clear that while David wants so badly for his father to be seen by everyone the same way he sees him, at the end of the cannot separate the good from the bad. It pains me because Benoit was such a big part of my childhood. He was my favorite wrestler, and WrestleMania 20 is one of the defining moments I got to ever witness. After he and Eddie both passed away, it's like my passion for WWE passed along with them. I'm still a casual fan, but I don't think I'll ever be as big a fan as I was during that time. That being said, while Benoit is one of the most gifted wrestlers of all time, you cannot think of him and not think of the terrible shit he did. Whether he was in the right state of mind or not, the fact is he took the lives of two innocent people, one being a 7 year old child. Daniel and Nancy's lives are much more important than Benoit's career, so no way should he ever be recognized for that.

ye no... credit to WWE for holding firm on this. Chris was an exceptional in ring performer, one of the best, and i truly sympathise for Dave having to live with the damage caused by his father's actions.. but a HOF'er needs to be looked at more for more than what they did within the industry and murdering your family easily negates any professional legacy you may have built.

You gotta feel bad for David because it's his Dad. Lots of kids idolize their parents. Unfortunately, one horrific action is all it takes. His dad was a fantastic wrestler, but that one horrible weekend in June of 2007 will always prevent him from getting into the HOF. I don't have a problem with him pursuing a wrestling career. But, to wrestle in gear similar to his Dad's? Let alone use his Dad's ring entrance? Not a good idea.

I think it's awesome that he wants to wrestle, and follow his father in that line of work. But he 100% will not be successful if he uses "Chris Benoit". Especially in Wwe. Even if he doesn't use Chris' theme or his gear, he still LOOKS like him. And just picture this, he's wrestling a match on Smackdown, and you can clearly hear "Chris Benoit" chants. Or during his promo's. Wwe is not letting that shit happen. Just imagine the reaction... You can't have David Benoit wrestling without his father's name being mentioned, or talked about.

It's not fair for David to pay the evil acts of his father. He did absolutely nothing wrong. But that's not how society works. No major wrestling promotion will never touch this kid, considering the circumstances of those horrific events in 2007. If he maintains his goal of keeping his father's last name, wrestling style, ring attire, and theme music of Chris, it will never work. It's very difficult because he wants to find a way to tribute his father because he loves him very much. If he wants to make his mark in wrestling, he'll have to change his character and show his wrestling ability. We don't know how good of a wrestler he is and which promotion will give him a chance. I understand his mindset of of having his father in the hall of fame, however, WWE will never put him in. The company has spent more than a decade to distance itself from Benoit. Putting him into the hall of fame would be a PR nightmare for WWE. It sad for David, because he's a nice kid and is still hurting from his loss. But reality will remind him of who his father was and the final act of his life.

Here’s the thing, David could still get into the wrestling business and be mildly successful regardless of his age. I mean DDP made it huge in the business regardless of how old he was when he started. David will never it make it as big as DDP did, but he could make a career out of it. The thing that will destroy David’s career before it even starts is his wanting to follow Benoit’s career to a tee. He already will have his career hampered due to him being Benoit’s son, but for him to want to have a similar wrestling style, same music, similar tights etc is completely ludicrous. Somebody needs to sit him down and talk to him so that he fully understands what Benoit did and y he needs to separate himself from the lineage as much as possible and y Chris being in the HOF absolutely will not happen
