I still haven't come to terms with Bowie's passing. I remember space oddity on countdown as a child. Ashes to ashes was magical - the music and the film clip. Modern love as a thirteen year old and I got the Lets Dance album on cassett. It took me to another place. Then at sixteen, my cousin gave me the scary monsters and ziggy stardust albums. From then I couldn't get enough and could not believe how much great stuff he had. I was continually amazed as I discovered song after song and lost myself in his music. Such a big part of my childhood, adolescence and teen years. I spent countless hours sketching his portrait and I purchased the Bowie Song Book and attempted to play every song from Life on Mars to All The Madmen. I couldnt play piano. I couldnt read music I just let the chord diagrams guide me. As an adult, I continued to enjoy his music - old and new. He was a gifted soul indeed and touched so many lives. When he passed I felt I lost a big part of myself, my story. Bowie was the soundtrack to my life.

Very clever observation! I’ve been a fan since TMWSTW came out but never got to see him as when I was old enough he was playing much bigger venues & I don’t do anything except clubs & theatres (very bad experience @ stadium). So when I got the call he was doing a gig w/ his “new band” in a small nightclub, unannounced, I was there. Nobody understood Tin Machine, but I was so happy seeing him creating new art right in front of me! I had zero thoughts of comparing TM to anything prior until the next day when people who’d walked out were complaining it wasn’t “Bowie”. Still didn’t change my mind, I enjoyed the music & always looked forward to what he’d do next. I’m an author/ writer & if I’d had the chance to interview him, it’d never be looking back unless he brought it up as what he was doing at present or thinking of doing was always interesting! I did write positive reviews of the “secret” gig & their albums, reminding people he *never* stayed static.

Talented, great voice and best of all, an amazing sense of humour. Took his work seriously, never took himself seriously. Laugh out loud funny. Watch his later interviews, so good. I don't much care for Let's Dance - not because it's "pop", not because the word "dance" is in it, not because it's one of his most popular records, but because, for the genius songwriter that is David Bowie, it's not all that, really. In the case of 99% of other writers it would be a landmark, but not for Bowie.

Bowie has never been easy to understand because he was so out of the ordinary that many people considered him strange. If you notice even now the majority of the public knows the easiest songs Let's dance or the more "traditional rock" songs especially in the USA and his image and his look were a gift and a curse at the same time. Sometimes I watch people reactions on You Tube as a sociological study (lol. but It can make you understand some things) and often they are disoriented and uncomfortable both with his music and his image because they don't want to be taken out of their comfort zone they don't want to be challenged in a way often they say something like "It's too complicated" "too many things happening at the same time" and they want to find a simple straightforward meaning in the lyrics they don't understand non linear writing which was basically what Bowie did. I know I'm risking to sound like an elitist or a snob but I think you have to be intelligent open minded and well read to fully understand what he did and sorry to say this but not many people are.

I am a big fan of Bowies music. But I must say, often when I listened to a Bowiesong for the first time it was not so easy to like it ad hoc. You had to work with his songs and after a while you got almost addicted to the songs. Move on, sweet thing even heroes was the first time like a strange sound I never heard before. He was not a Phil Collins. Not to say sth. bad about P.C.

Because he was already older when he passed away? He created music for five decades and it's pretty natural for people to give an artist pretty underwhelming response at the end of their career. Streaming and online counts are young artists game. In short, only if youtube was accessible in 70's then I'm afraid nobody would've overshadowed him in views. He would've been the most subscribed musician on RU-vid if it was a thing in 70's.

IN MEMORY OF THE SLAIN HERO AND HIS RESURRECTION You roared like a Lion in Manhattan, you spent all your money and lived like a king...you fought the battles of the Lord and came to destitution. You cried out in the gates of the city like a leper Messiah, and none gave heed to your call except the outcasts and dregs of society. You gathered them together as a shepherd gathers his sheep...they came to life at your words, your art and your reckless abandon of all convention. You piped a wondrous tune and the light of light entered into them. You fell into the shadow of death and " looked for his ass". You flew from Station to Station like a demon in your mad quest for redemption--- you redeemed others, yet you didn't redeem yourself. How have the mighty fallen! Your days passed like a shadow, yet you fought the evil eye of Sauron...you fought the wild beasts in the forests of Mordor....the hordes of Gog and Magog descended upon you. They surrounded you like maddened bees, yet you cut them off in the name of the Lord. But Gog had the upper hand and slew you...he desecrated your body, he infested your temple with the wasting disease! Yet you held on to the last and made an everlasting memory of your strife, the cries of your art told the tale of your war, it told the gospel of your death, it published the news of your ascension...here you are, dwelling in heaven, no scars to be seen...here you are, one magical movement from Keter to Malkuth! Here you are, you fly like an angel from Station to Station! Fly on you crazy diamonds, and arise from the dust...the time of your warfare is past... He walks among us like a god among men...and who can tell his tale? He was not regarded by the high and mighty, he was cast off as a freak of nature....yet he gathered the outcasts of Israel...his memory endures forever! He will be given the spoils of war, he will be raised and exalted more than he ever was during the days of his mortality...he is the hope of all of those who have fallen in battle! Shine on, shine on you mad Man, you Hero, you Lazarus, you Blackstar!

Agree with Noel - I think it's his greatest song - but there were also some other writers and composers involved into it.

Oh, praise from Noel Gallagher, now I guess Bowie’s soul can finally rest in peace.

Joyous! Judging from most comments here, a good number of people believe just that. Whether it's the generic music, the nursery rhyme lyrics, the missing-link attitude, the in-depth Bowie knowledge that goes as far as, er, 'Let's Dance', Noel truly is 'praise from Caesar'!

No mention of Liam Gallagher attempting to punch Bowie and calling him an 'has been' backstage at Jools Holland in 1995? How odd,,

That's simply shows the person he is, at that time Liam thought he was the new "Bowie"😑 He is the "has-been" now, as Bowie is a legend forever...Ashes to ashes...all my respect to Noel 😉

No idea if that's true or not, but if it is, what does it have to do with Noel Gallagher talking about Bowie's music ? You realize he and his and brothers are two different persons right ? 😁

@@BLKC76 Fair point. It is true, Liam was immediately escorted out of the building by security and Noel carried their performance solo. A mighty fine job he made of it too.

They're not really the same kind of musicians and persons, so comparing these two doesn't really makes sense I think ^^ But yes, Noel would agree. ^^ He really loves Bowie and respect him a lot, there's not many artists that he praises as much as him 😁
