As a huge NIN fan, I've seen a million interviews with Trent. This is the happiest interview I've ever seen with him... I can only think that it was Bowie's fault. RIP

You are so right! You rarely see Trent smile in interviews. He's always so conservative & serious. Shy & unassuming as David describes, but he's quite light hearted here. You can really see that David was someone Trent trusted, respected & admired greatly.

Everyone gushing over Bowie and Reznor. That parts a given. But lets not forget the third talent in the room: Kurt Loder. I grew up watching the man and his tasteful ways of delivering not only news but memorable interviews such as this. Not sure what hes doing these days, but he was practically the face and voice of MTV throughout the 90s. Seemed like a professional and artists seemed to have a great respect for him.

True. Bowie also touched on 1960s R'nB (the Mannish Boys; his first band, a mod group), folk ("Letter for Hermione", his first award-winning song), space rock ("Space Oddity", his breakout tune), music hall (most of Hunky Dory, considered by many critics his best record), glam rock (Ziggy Stardust & Aladdin Sane periods, when he broke into the mainstream), 1970s soul (his "plastic soul" era, when he moved to New York and recorded the Young Americans album with Luther Vandross), jazz ("Wild is the Wind", a gorgeous ballad on his sleek Station to Station album), garage rock ("Boys Keep Swinging" and much of his work with Iggy Pop on The Idiot record), ambient rock ("Heroes", as well as much of his Low and Lodger albums recorded in Berlin with Brian Eno), funk ("Fashion" and "Ashes to Ashes", his popular dance tunes from the later 1970s), and eventually electronica ("I'm Afraid of Americans" and most of his collaborations with Trent Reznor in the 1990s). Bowie indeed had a wide and eclectic musical palate.

Trent is so young here. It's amazing to see how well he's developed as an artist and gained his confidence. David has always had an amazing eye for real talent and hard work. He scoped Trent knowing how very promising he was. Funny to have such a deep love for both these two individual's art over my lifetime (as a now 30 something year old guy) and come back to find this interview I'd over looked. I knew of their tour together but never watched this. It put a smile to my face to see Trent all uncomfortable. David nonchalant but knowing Trent was to become greater with time. He was right. Trent's been playing in the background with movie soundtracks lately, but doing such increasingly incredible things. Looking forward to Trent's creations knowing David left him with some of his Legacy. I see bits and pieces of David in Trent's works these days, I'm glad and I think Trent gets it what he was given. @cactaceous
@cactaceous 8 лет назад
+Ironjack53 How am I off base? I love Bowie more than I love NIN but lets have the facts right. This interview is from 1995. The Downward Spiral had come out the previous year and had been an amazing critical and commercial success. Their Woodstock 94 performance was mythologized. Bowie on the other hand was coming off the lucrative but completely panned Never Let Me Down album and the Glass Spider tour, the lackluster reception to both Tin Machine albums and the utter indifference, both commercial and critically to Black Tie White Noise and the ignored Buddha of Suburbia. That's why he went back to Eno on Outside and recruited Trent and NIN for the tour. He needed a spark. He needed a resurgence. He needed inspiration. He needed Eno and Trent to get him back on track. He got it. Outside is his best album since Scary Monsters and the tour was well received and got him back on MTV on high rotation when they both made the I'm Afraid of Americans video from Earthling. I was 16 when all of this was happening and though NIN he got exposure to a much younger demographic. I knew of Bowie but didn't feel compelled to explore until his association w NIN. So, I'm not off base.

Every once in a while I come back to this video to remind myself that humanity is capable of great things. Just look at these two geniuses. Look at how relaxed they are, like if they were just two random guys having a chat and not two of the most important artsits of our time. The fact that we had these two in music, is enough for you to feel proud of humanity and all the great things we are capable to do. RIP Starman for your incalculable influence on arts. And thank you for giving Trent a light of hope in all that darkness he was going thru in that time. How I wish both of them could have one more musical moment together before the end.

@leegsy
@leegsy 7 лет назад
Absolutely. Trent looks very healthy and youthful for a man who used to punish himself with endless touring and lots of chemicals and everything in between. He also looks pretty content in his own skin these days. I'm glad he finally found some peace in himself. Being young and full of rage can produce some very creative stuff but it can also drag you down and it gets tiresome after a while.

'I'm Afraid of Americans' is an outstanding track. The Bowie version is amazing, too, but Reznor brings it to a whole new level. Especially if you're already a Nine Inch Nails fan! Their live cover of 'Hurt' is equally amazing, if you've never seen the 'Closure' tour video. I don't know what other media of it exists, but the performance is just stellar.

Strange that Bowie refers to his music as over-layered and textured, whilst referring to Trent as a minimalist, I've always seen Reznor's music as very textured, and over-layered, so much so that I can always hear something new every time I listen. Maybe it's just in context to this collaboration.

At this time NIN was huge and at the end of the Downward Spiral tour, so most people at the shows were there to see NIN who was opening. They knew half the crowd would leave if there was a break or intermission between the bands. So the way they melded both bands and both performed a few songs together was genius. Hearing Bowie’s vocals on my favorite NIN song Reptile blew me away. Still one of the best concert experiences of my life!!! RIP David Bowie!!!

I went to that tour. Great show. Hated the audience though honestly. Place was jam packed for Nine Inch Nails. When they finished their set and then their combo set with Bowie, AND during the first part of Bowie's set, tons of people started leaving so eventually Bowie was playing to about half an arena.
