This is a solo I often play live with my psychedelic rock group, Fake Swedish. The idea is to create an emotive melody that utilizes perfectly-landed pentatonic triplets, as David Gilmour does.

Eric, thank you once again for a truly tasty titbit. I love Dave Gilmore's style, as I do that of Dave Rawlings and Marc Ribot so I'm one happy follower. Your lessons are always inspiring, perspicuous and just plain enjoyable. Hwyl fawr!

Thanks Eric. Yet again a quick bit of gold to open the door to soloing. Also, I’m a Gilmour fan and the triplet idea is spot on. I’ve been going over the solos again and it works so well not only to play but understand how each of Gilmours licks fit together👍🇬🇧

I love your lessons because you teach the theory and the mechanics as well as technique. So many guitar lessons on here just show parrot fashion what frets to play and nothing of significance is acheived. One lesson from you and the student gains a multtude of transferable skills. Jerry Cantrell is very good at grabbing those extra notes off the bend. Also, Hendrix licks are like currency. I remember teaching a friend the solo to Hey Joe. He was so excited and appreciative. Also, a great place to learn those triplets.

This was probably the most helpful lesson for me. Playing triplets. I did not know. For some reason I thought it meant rocket speed playing and so I stayed away. "Harmonic Vibrato" is Leo Fender-speak for inverted-phase tremolo, where the tremolo effect circuit of his early-60s Brownface amps split the musical signal into bass and treble and amplitude-modulated them 180 degrees out of phase. This creates a slightly phasey sound. Leo's first new amp after selling Fender to CBS, the Music Man 112 Sixty-Five gave the concept of tremolo a further twist with an amplitude modulation waveform that doubles up between 5 &10 on the intensity knob. This W-shaped waveform sounds even more like a Univibe than the Brownface circuit, especially with a distorted guitar tone.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
Yeah! I've always wanted a brownface amp with the harmonic vibrato. Now I'm gonna be on the lookout for a Music Man 112 65! Used to have the big one, the Rd 135 head - very versatile amp.

Nice work but curious about "Here's the perfectly landed Gilmour six tuplets" (3:48). on the fourth "tuplet" you reach with your 3rd finger to hit the G note (second string 8th fret). Why do you go out of position (one finger per fret) and use your 3rd finger rather than the fourth finger? You correctly used your fourth finger for the C note (8th fret first string), why not correct form on the second string G right above it?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 5 лет назад
Good question! I watched that bit again - The reason I use the ring finger on that 8 is to do that tiny 1/4 tone bend. Some folks would do it with their pinky, but that never really works for me. If I'm not bending I always use proper positioning though :-)

@EricHaugenGuitar

They are short-scale, so it can be awkward to get used to how little the neck is. If you have big hands I definitely wouldn't recommend one. What would be actually more helpful is teaching the techniques for muting what one doesn't play. It's pretty easy to follow a short tab and keep doing it. But I see a void of mention that there is this world of ensuring that there is no incidental racket that happen with pull-offs, hammer-ons, bends and finger shape changes, I would think the masters "land" their triplets so well because they use techniques to prevent sideline clunkers. That is the hardest part for me--I sometimes wonder if one's finger girth and/or length excludes some of us from getting there and may be why there are less superstars than there might otherwise be. But again, it may just be that mastering the art involves the technique of precision silence.

How can I fit triplets into a regular 4/4 time?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 года назад
instead of counting 1 - 2 - 3 - 4, you divide each beat into 3. 123 123 123 123 Check out this vid all about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V27pLxuR_k8.html

i notice your picking direction during the triplets is not alternate picking. what is your strategy for picking direction and are you consciously thinking about that during the triplets?
@zTrebster
@zTrebster 7 лет назад
It's a technique called economy picking where you alternate pick on notes that stay on the same string and you sweep pick when changing strings, it's the most efficient way of picking for stuff like that.
@lolobuggah2670
@lolobuggah2670 7 лет назад
Trey Beastin' it doesn't look like economy picking either.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
Looks like I doing mostly downstrokes. In my teens, I tried really hard to go fast - practiced sweep picking, economy picking, tapping. One day, when I was 19, I realized it wasn't gonna happen. Since then I've embraced my slowness :) I think at the tempo of this demo, you could get away with downstrokes only.

Hi Eric, thanks for another awesome video! I’d like to practice my triplets further (also other odd note groupings like quintuplets and septuplets) and my preferred way of learning is to transcribe pre-existing songs. Just wondering can you recommend any other guitar solos/riffs that use this technique a lot?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 6 лет назад
While I called this vid "Gilmour Inspired," this idea first came from SRV. He really was great at just absolutely nailing pentatonic triplets. I'm not a huge SRV guy, so I couldn't really point you to a specific song, but poke around his catalog and see is something jumps out as a particularly learnable moment :-)
@davidenglish7835
@davidenglish7835 6 лет назад
Thanks Eric! Not a big SRV guy myself either, however I did just happen to be listening to ‘Gabrielle’ by Ween, which has got some awesome triplet runs that should keep me busy for a while! Better go fetch my wah pedal......

Cool videos, man. I've just started watching them recently. Also, I dig the Fake Swedish album. I just released my 1st little ep called Cap'n Dudley's Secret Ear on Spotify and wherever. I'd love to know what you think. Either way, keep doing what you're doing, I really like the vids and find inspiration in them. Maybe do a personal lesson sometime if I can.

Is the reason why triplets are so essential is that they correspond to the rhythmic pattern of a blues shuffle? Or something else?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
I think you're spot on with that observation, Ron! Also, there's something about the feeling of those rolling threes that is very effective.

I’m stuck in acoustic land , help. I don’t know what the f you’re talking about when you play with your effects. Funny but I went to school for worked with and understand electronics more then most people Knowing how to get the sounds you want seems to be an art on its own
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 5 лет назад
I hear ya, man! I understand electricity a tiny bit, but am in awe of folks like you that actually get it! But yeah, knowing how to combine effects devices to create sounds is a thing all its own - takes a lot of trial and error!
