SOF selection, for whatever unit you aim at, is no joke. Yet there are civilians out there who say sh*t like, "I was going to jon the Army and be a Green Beret but I decided to do something else." Yeah... uh... okay. The great thing about Delta and DevGru is everyone who attends those selections probably already served time in an elite operational unit already, SOF or conventional. Those two units attract only the best of the best.

@@SugeKnightMista no did not mistype Delta was the named used in the 90s Then they called themselves CAG, then ACE now they have a different name. I was saying if you wanna be a part of that unit You HAVE to have served in another high pace higher quality squad before. For Q Corse or Buds you can literally sign up for the army or navy and just go to selection. Same for Ranger school (not saying you will make it but it does happen) but for delta or what ever they call themselves now-you have to A-be recommend by a superior. Pat MacNemera (Former Green beret then delta operator) said his Staff sergeant told him he wanted him to try out for the unit. Then you have to basically put together a packet (your resume) what schools you’ve finished, combat experience etc. then If they like it you can then find out when selection is and try out

The Big Army is not was big as it was in the late 1980s. That has to hurt the SOF community. How does the Navy recruit an elite SOF unit from an organization that rarely uses small arms and has no infantry formations?
@GhostRanger5060
@GhostRanger5060 3 месяца назад
@@darbyheavey406 You nailed it. This is absolutely why Navy SEALs, who excel at UDT, littoral direct action raids, and Maritime interdiction stuff-- SOF skillsets a Navy needs--should never be used in a UW, ground operation, or long range recon mission unless they have been through a US Army schoolhouse that teaches that stuff. SEALs have been sold to the public, and worse, to JSOC, as a one size fits all all-mission SOF capability. And that is BS. Any USMC or Army infantryman worth his weight in 5.56 ammo can read about Rogers Ridge or Operation Redwing and wonder why SEALs are getting awards and accolades for making missteps that would get an infantry junior officer or E-7 relieved from duty. DEVGRU, of course, is a different animal. I am talking about your average UDT SEAL. Good men, but not as good as their press releases claim when it comes to stuff the US Army and Marines have been doing since the American Revolution.

David is just an awesome person. I’m proud to call him a fellow American. Delta is all about being the “right” person. David didn’t endear himself, by what I could gather from his books, with the SEAL community. They’re a hard driving, drinking community and if you don’t hang with the boys, they’ll single you out. David wanted to continue the tough standards set in BUDS, but once he got into the Teams, he discovered that the hardest part was already done. He upset a lot of SEALS by calling them out for their lack standards once out of BUDS and SQT. He would have thrived in Ranger Regiment where it only gets tougher after you’ve proved yourself by earning the Tab. There was a SEAL on a show a couple of months ago who even stated that the Rangers train harder than the SEALS--quite a compliment. So, David didn’t help himself with the SEALS, and that may have seeped into the ears of the Delta selection board. Just my two cents; and I was only a Ranger back in the 1990’s when we weren’t as SpecOps are they are now…..meaning= airfield seizures, setting up and conducting Vietnam style patrol base operations. They are doing missions today that 25 years ago would have only been a Delta or ST6 mission.

Land navigation isn't easy for Navy people. But Army people are wrapped into land navigation from basic training (almost day one). Im sure Delta Cadre gave sufficient instruction and teachings to pass the land navigation. that's why it's so respectful that Goggins admits that he screwed it up and got unfocused. He owned that mistake. Got to respect that. I wish he would've passed, but if he wouldve passed, we'd probably never know who Goggins is to this day. Of course, he didn't go to green team. We now know SEALS over there didn't like him. And the vote or who u like culture is a real thing in many places. Right or wrong, its a real thing. Much respect Goggins, youre a bad mo fo! 💯

@djbattledmv
@djbattledmv 3 месяца назад
@vrcmf3172 My point exactly! Buck was in the Army. Basic training Army members get exposed to land navigation. I was in the Army, I KNOW! Of course, once one goes to the Q course, it will be harder/different because at that point you're competing to make the selection. The beads are for keeping count of your distance/pace. Some of us get exposed to that as well, depending on who you're around. Im pretty sure Goggins wasnt exposed to that information, tactic or skillset prior to going. Your MOS (Job) doesn't dictate our exposure in the Army, it's more so the people you're around. If I was a cook and I'm around a cook who came from unit that know certain things, they might expose you to it. All I'm simply saying is Goggins and many Navy people aren't exposed to components of Land Navigation as Army people are from almost day one. I hope you didn't come on this thread to argue, because it's not that serious. Much love Go Goggins!!

This guy isn’t very straight. Just say you tried out and didn’t make it instead of this dancing around “the last day before the 40 miler”? Which is the hardest event (he didn’t do) and a lotta people fail. Also, people who finish the 40 miler in time can and do get dropped cause the board is brutal (just cause you finish selection doesn’t mean they have to select you). It sounds like this guy is far from being “almost” selected. Also, “positivity” screening for NSWG and not getting orders means you didn’t make it. Again, just because you finish doesn’t mean they have to select you. Don’t get me wrong, this guy had a impressive career on which he should be proud of, so why this bs? There’s no shame in not getting selected for a SMU. They only select the right guys (which doesn’t necessarily mean the best guys).

We are assuming. Many reasons the Cadre for tier 1 (Devgru or Delta) can drop you. It could be 1 thing or multiple things from performance, attitude or medical. We know he had heart surgeries in the military from all the weight he had to lose to just get in BUDS. We know he failed BUDS twice because he got injured and was told the 3rd time was his last shot. He made it but didn't go to full deployments because of heart surgeries. My money is that's the main reason he was passed over for DEVGRU and didn't get picked up DELTA. It makes me admire him more what he had to do with the medical obstacles just to make it to regular SEALS. He went also to Ranger training. So the guy is tough. If he had a better heart, no doubt he would have made it to DEVGRU and he will never look for DELTA.

The Navy had 2 other training bases. Army is more, since they are a bigger branch. You are assuming it's "personality" but nobody knows except the Cadre and the military needs at the time. Nobody gets to E-7 in the military if you have a "personality" issue, they won't let you re-enlist and to be an E-7 , you need at least to be 8 years in the military minimum. And no, you don't know how many points there are until you are done for the day and selected for the next day. You only know how many points you had the day before. But for purposes of estimation, you just know when you are running slow and cutting it close. I can't explain it. And neither can he so to answer the interviewer I think he had to come up with an estimated figure to try to explain it. Many who drop do so because they tried running these selection orienteering ranges. And you end up burning out too early when there are points remining. I’m 90% sure he’s bullshitting about being ahead of the time standard. Based on multiple interviews, the candidates are not briefed what the time standard is. Hell, most of the instructor staff don’t know what the standard is. There’s only a handful of positions that are in the know on the How, What, Where, Why as it is to Selection. And they never give it up. When a candidate does ask when they need to make their next point, the instructors will usually say something along the lines of “Just do your best”, which is of course by design (to mess with your head and see if it’ll negatively effect performance). Goggins is more than likely guessing he’s ahead of what the time is.

Exceptional human being in so many ways but I’m wondering if some of what was going on was just that while he was one of the best men he was not exactly what they were looking for at that moment. Sounds like they use standards to filter out those they want those they don’t want. My guess is that at that moment, he was not what they were looking for. Nothing against him and not to denigrate him at all as he is an exceptional human being and Yet, Delta has what they’re looking for and they don’t tell anybody and at that moment he was not it.

Even if he did, not sure if he would've made it through OTC after selection because it's all about the highest levels of shooting/CQB and information processing (it's not physical). but major respect to him for getting through most of the course.
