Russ was more than happy to let big Wiltie shoot 40 times a game to get his points (which he was always aware of) and how many times did I see him block two of Chamberlain's dunk attempts under the basket and then let him make the 3rd when the game was already in the bag for the Celtics? Yeah, #6 is the greatest basketball player ever, Q.E.D.!

Thank you so much for posting! I became a basketball fan in the late 60s and the Celtics were my favorite team, and these 2 Hall of Famers in particular, I guess because they were usually on the game of the week on Sundays. What gentleman they are. Most of the players today are aloof and they act like they're doing you a favor by saying a few words in an interview. These two, despite their elevated status as legends of the game are engaging in the interview and very insightful and intelligent. Notice how they talk about the team and not their individual performances. They would never show up their opponents with this ridiculous chest thumping and other childish antics. Thanks for letting me relive my youth through this!

Two things about Havlicek. He was a compulsive neat freak. He had all these rituals when he traveled that his socks, his clothes all had to be folded a certain way. The other thing. I was told - and I think I believe this - that when they tried to give him a chest X-Ray his lungs were so big that they wouldn't fit on a conventional X-Ray film. That bit about the interview where he said he would just run around - he was in incredible physical condition always.

Priceless. Those were "The Real Days"; like at any time, nothin' was perfect, but during that Era & so many before it & after it, i think more things were done "the right way" than the number of things that are done "the right way" in the past 40 yrs. I really like Mr. Russell & i agree with him 100% in regards to his reply about being a man who plays basketball but considering that his skin was the color that it was, & there's nothing wrong about that, & considering the history of the U.S.A., i wonder if he would've answered that question the same way if his skin had the least amount of melanin in it? I'm just curious, that's all.
@Huntinggreatness
@Huntinggreatness 15 дней назад
I believe he would have. He told me that I was, "Not a football player... rather someone who's involved in athletics." Seems small or basic - but I was then able to separate myself from my job. So it put what I did... vs who I am in perspective. Which reminded me that I'm so much more then just my profession (we all are). And, ya those were the 'Real Days' - which is why I always sought out to learn and listen to that generation.

Game 7 of the 1969 Finals, Chamberlain's last game against Bill Russell, Wilt twisted his right knee with 5½ minutes left and was soon replaced. Chamberlain said he wanted to return, but that Lakers coach Butch van Breda Kolff wouldn't put him back in. That decision might have something to do with the celtics team win?
@4orrcountry
@4orrcountry Год назад
Looking at it from afar, I can see why you might think that way, but there was much more to it than that: Lakers coach Van Breda Kolff was reportedly disgusted at Wilt for pulling himself out of the game when he hurt his leg. It was Game 7, IN LA, for God's sake, with just a few minutes to in the game and Wilt, being a key player, BELONGED on the court! Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and play - and that was one of those times. But Wilt chose not to. And in so doing, Wilt lost some respect from in and around the basketball world.
