Накануне своего 60-летия, когда был исполнен этот концерт, Давид Ойстрах и сейчас - через десятилетия - не перестает меня удивлять и оставаться при этом по-прежнему всё-таки недосягаемым. Вот где божественный дар !!! Он его раздаривал людям настолько щедро - никому такое и вовек не снилось !!! - так скажу...он не гонялся за лаврами и званиями...тоже черта гения. Изредка такое бывает, что иные - как 20-летняя Hilary Hann - очень близко пододвигаются к такому фантастическому воплощению Шостаковича !!! - вот это радует...из российских скрипачей - исключая феноменальный дар Леонида Когана - сколько за ними наблюдаю, пока никого и рядом не сыскать: они обласканы, признаны своими кругами - но нелюбимы народом...вот что важно. Потому что заперли себя в узкие тиски́ самообольщения, наград и званий. Им не до служения Музыке...
When people talk about this work, it's almost always about the Passacaglia. But man, the Nocturne is something else entirely. It has the ability to make me feel things which nothing else can do. It has the ability to destroy me in a way Wagner can not even do. It's like getting a little glimpse of God, of something so high that it is way too complex for us humans to understand. Shostakovich merged romanticism and expressionism in the most divine way. The most precious piece of music I have heard in the quarter of a century that I have been breathing air.
The Passacaglia seems to be the central pillar of the piece, but the Nocturne is fantastic as well. For me, the Scherzo and the Cadenza are what I like most. I have been listening to this piece of music since I was 16 years old and I am now 42 and I still love it deeply.
I understand that at the rehearsal before the premiere performance, Oistrakh pleaded with Shostakovich to add a few bars of orchestra after the cadenza so that he would have an opportunity to catch his breath and wipe sweat off his brow. Shostakovich obliged and the change was made in time for the concert.

I saw him perform this at Royal Albert Hall in November or December of 1966. I was in the 5th or 6th row and I remember he was drenched in sweat by the end. Remember he’s playing almost the whole time.

How to express suffocation and despair in the very heart of the greatest disasters? Shostakovich and Oistrakh answered with one of the most expressive and intense achievement of the Twentieth Century.
I just listened to performance of the same concerto by Midori. Excellent, amazing. And now Oystrakh, I have listened to him live and would listen often for more than 40 years. No one will ever perform this concerto like him. No one, it was written for him. But every strong violinist should play and enjoy it. It is not an athletic competition, everybody should play and present his interpretation. But it is Oystrakh. It is OK not to come even close, play and I will enjoy your interpretation too.
Very wise words. I'm a music student and I will play this piece this spring again and even though I know I won't come close to this, I will do everything to play just one note as beautifully as him. Also, playing this piece is one of the most surreal experiences one can have.
For the duration of this I have forgotten how in love I am this concerto. I just sat openmouthed and stared at nothing in disbelief. Oistrach + this orchestra = eargasm. How good must a performance be to break audience.exe? EDIT: 34:40 whaaat? How is this level of perfection even possible?
Сколько бы ни слушал сейчас других солистов - они вязнут в вихре и в водопаде сольной партии, но чего-то цельного услышать после Ойстраха так и не привелось...ни в записи, ни тем более вживую.
Aparte de la genialidad de este extraordinario intérprete,una de sus más características virtudes fue su casi perfecta entonación y afinación,cada nota alcanzaba hasta la última coma en afinación,tanto así que maravilla lo colorido de los armónicos que arranca en cada de sus notas. Sin lugar a dudas,uno de los más maravillosos interpretes del violin en el pasado siglo.
Техническая сторона сама по себе мало интересовала Ойстраха...он был выше на голову многих. Иногда поклонники Хайфеца бывают сильно уязвлены - что его отодвигают в тень. Он для меня биоробот - что в нём душевного? - большой вопрос. Ойстрах совершенно иного масштаба - это данность...чего об этом спорить? Его младший современник Леонид Коган был ярчайшим музыкантом той эпохи - сейчас таких нет...и он тоже во многом превосходил многих современников. Прежде всего глубиной трактовок. Ойстрах и Коган не гнались за известностью и гонорарами - они служили Музыке !!! - вот это и поныне отличает их от всех других...они ведь и погибли раньше срока. Где сейчас такое? - чтоб жизнь отдать... Вывод один: донести замысел автора - вот в чём была для таких гигантов вся фишка...а не себя любимого выпячивать. Время и так им воздало - раз по сию пору вспоминаем этих подвижников и гениев... Я сам по призванию больше необразованный ваятель и в рабочей общаге г.Владимира сделал в 1987 году бюст Леонида Когана...а сейчас смотрю - насколько все же гармоничен и красив со скрипкой Давид Ойстрах накануне своего 60-летия...артикуляция фантастическая !!! - это от Бога... There will never be another Oistrakh but I have to say, Alina Ibragimova comes as close as it gets. Professional orchestra musicians aren't easy to impress - we've heard them all, LOL, but she just performed this concerto with our orchestra, and all of us were gobsmacked - it was THAT good. Amazing violinist - if you ever get a chance - go and hear her!
That was a superb and masterly performance, easily one of the best violinists of all time, a performer of unparalleled virtuosity and great depth of understanding that places him several steps above his peers; also given his association with the composer non is more suited to playing Shostakovich’s music than him
Говорил же Паганини - чтобы сильно играть, надо сильно чувствовать...и да - надо прежде всего иметь судьбу. Плеяда послевоенных советских скрипачей многое из той эпохи пронесли через своё сердце - потому они и недосягаемы...это отпечаталось и в их судьбах. Ярчайший и глубокий среди них Ойстрах. Новые имена здесь неуместны - это другое. Сейчас в 21-м веке никто в такой степени не является олицетворением своей страны - Ойстрах им был однозначно. Нынешним не хватает главного - судьбы, связанной с Отечеством.

May I recommend Veriko Tchumburidzes performance in the finals of the Wieniawski competition? Though she cannot hold a candle to Oistrach, she still brings sufficient fire to the piece to make it come alive, and not many violinists achieve that.
The relationship between Oistrakh and that concerto could not be closer. DDS composed it but Oistrakh realised it and , as it were, gave birth to it. He was like a stepfather to it and none can ever perform it as well, though some have come close. Maybe no one save Oistrakh have a right to play it magnificently?

N. Jackson Well, Oistrach is widely considered unparalleled. The manner in which he plays is truly exquisite. There are not many others like him. The only other violinist that I hold in similarily high regard is Augustin Hadelich.
It is awful to simlpy compare two master performances like that in terms of better and worse. Each of them is violn legend already. Music is not only competition.
