Hi guys. A big thank you for hitting this and JP for suggesting it. Definitely one of my my top 20 artists of all time, along with Japan, the band he used to be in. Some tracks worth listening to are "Nightporter" by Japan and "Forbidden Colours" by David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto from the album "A Victim Of Stars". Nick, you have already hit the Sakamoto version.❤

I love David Sylvian’s music. He is such a unique musician/artist. His album Gone to Earth (1986) with Robert Fripp is a favorite along with Sylvian/Fripp The First Day (1993). A hidden gem is his band Nine Horses (2005) with his brother and drummer Steve Jansen. Also check out the band Rain Tree Crow (1991) which has his original band Japan members Richard Barbieri (Porcupine Tree) Steve Jansen and Mick Karn on bass. Wow I did all that from memory…lol. You both will love his music!

Sylvian’s eighties albums are fantastic. Life-changing for me growing up. It began with Japan, but his first solo ”Brilliant Trees” made the change. Check out ”The Ink In The Well” and ”Nostalghia” från that one. Experimental, beautiful but not difficult. You have much to discover. The cover art is by designer Vaughan Oliver, who made so many covers for record company 4ad. Very special style.

Thank NicknLex. I am a regular viewer and subscriber of both your channel and Just JP's channel as well. David Sylvian is one of my favourite artists and I think you will emjoy many of his songs. He was also the lead singer of the group, Japan, a group that also highlighted Mick Karn, one of the most innovative bass players of all time. If you want to listen to Japan, I recommend any song from their album, "Tin Drum". Great video and review! 😎😎👍👍❤❤

It's funny that you mentioned Porcupine Tree, because the keyboardist for them is Richard Barberi, who was with David Sylvian in Japan, along with Steve Jansen (David's brother) Rob Dean, and the late Mick Karn. If you can find an issue of "Everything and Nothing", it is a compilation CD that has kind of a unique perspective from his various releases. Additionally, you may enjoy the music videos for Atom & Cell, and Small Metal gods.

David Sylvian wrote dozens of great songs. I would recommend you to listen to the song “Nostalgia” from his first solo album. A song as perfect as this. Also worth listening to is one of the most extraordinary chart hits of all time with his band Japan, a song called “Ghosts”. Actually, you could list at least 20 other extraordinary songs that he has written. Greetings from Germany.

Oh I wish you had started with 'the Boy with the Gun' , this song is great too, if you can, check out the whole album. David Sylvian's gteatest work can be found on the epic 'Gone to Earth' album, 'Taking the Veil' and 'Before the Bullfight' also, for a more ambient/ world music/ dub sound, the album "Alchemy' is breathtaking. He also collaborated with King Crimson master, Robert Fripp on their album, 'The First Day'.

A truly one-of a kind vocalist, David Sylvian's voice can make sense of any melody. Already a long time fan, after I first heard his work on the song "Linoleum" by Tweaker, the best way I can describe him is that he is like a river that will flow through any terrain and bring you to a song's destination.

Hi Nick and Lex! I'm pleased you have looked at Justin's request. I have followed JustJP pretty much from the start and have been a patron of his for a couple of years. I am not as obsessive about David Sylvian as Justin is, but "Orpheus" is a lovely and beautifully produced track. I agree with you that you can hear a little of David Bowie in there. I can also hear Scott Walker vibes in his music. Sylvian mentioned, in a recent audio diary broadcast on BBC 6Music, his love for the work of the late, Scott Walker. You should definitely look into some of Japan's music; I am sure you would both love the fretless bass playing of Mick Karn.

Thank you for giving David Sylvian another look. I think his solo work from 1984-1999 is sublime. Please also check out his old band Japan, who were something of proto-new romantics of immense talent. They featured the late Mick Karn, who was a giant of the Fretless Bass. Japan was a huge influence on Porcupine Tree. Steve Wilson, Colin Edwin, Gavin Harrison are full fan boys and have individually performed with ex-Japan members. While Richard Barbieri was also Japan's keyboardist.

I forgot to add recommendations. For David's Japan era "Quite Life, Swing, My New Career, Visions of China, Still Life in Mobile Homes" Collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto "Forbidden Colours, Bamboo Houses, Ride" Collaborations with Robert Fripp "Damage, Wave, River man" Collaborations with ex bandmate Mick Karn "Buoy, When Love Walks In" David's solo work "Red Guitar, Pulling Punches, Ink in the Well, Taking the Veil, Before the Bullfight, Laughter and forgetting, September, The Boy with the Gun, When Poets dream of Angels, Thalheim, Wanderlust, Darkest Dreaming" Rain Tree Crow (Japan reformed) "Pocket full of change, Every colour you are"

By the way, Steve Jansen played drums, David's brother and also member of japan in earlier days. The Porcupine Tree link goes a little deeper, obviously Richard Barbieri was a member of Japan, Steve Jansen was a huge influence on a younger Gavin Harrison. After Japan split, David Sylvian launched a solo career and the other members formed JBK, and one young Steven Wilson used to play guitar with them. There are video's of this on RU-vid. A rabbit hole if ever there was one.

David Sylvian has been my favourite musician since around 1975. There are some seriously world class musicians on this album, sadly some no longer with us. You had it easy with Orpheus. It's so much easy listening. There is a ton of back catalogue and apart from a few vanity project that only us diehards are into it's all worth a listen. Try "Jean the Birdman" you can thank me later.

Hopefully David Sylvian is starting to get some more serious traction on reaction videos. From my own experience I can say that whenever I turn someone onto his music, I get genuine and sincere thanks in response. The world needs more of him and such videos are a good vehicle for the younger generation to get some exposure to this brilliant and one of a kind artist. His 80s albums are some of the most tasteful and sublime popular music that came out in that period. Keep up the good work Nick and Lex. You are doing yourselves and many young people a great favour by discovering David Sylvian's music. Check out "Nostalgia" from his first solo album "Brilliant Trees".

#nicknlexrequest David Sylvian and Robert Fripp have a live album together, which is a must-hear called "Damage." React to "Darshan (The Road to Graceland)" or "Damage" or "The First Day." Those are three great songs from their brilliant live album. Fripp's guitars on "Darshan" are psycho-good. Like Bowie-noise good. 👍
