In this video we're paying Tribute to the music of Ryuichi Sakamoto. This one is sung by David Sylvian, of the band, Japan. We know nothing about this songwriter, so we're eager to hear his work. Enjoy!

Kudos to you two for doing this song. A great tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto. I think reaction videos are a window to the past for future generations to enjoy great music from the past. David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto, two artists in the 1980s that bridged East and West. In a time where divisions are growing around the world today, we need more artists like these today.

One of the most beautiful compositions ever written. Sylvian and Sakamoto both brilliant. Each have an impressive catalogue of work worth delving into. The movie is Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence . Stellar cast.✌❤

Sakamotos later concert pianist orchestra stuff is world class and God knows how they paid to move and tune that piano. Sadly missed.

Hi, just caught your post. The movie was 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' and this is my all time favourite song. David was a product of the 'Modern Romance' movement of the UK, which spawned Duran Duran, Visage, Japan, etc.

A sad passing and a brilliant song. Sylvian is a very deep rabbit hole and I can guarantee you won't like everything he has done. This is from his more commercial period. If you want to try something from his later works try 'Small Metal Gods'

Superb, requested/suggested this some time ago, delighted to see it finally aired . I personally prefer the original orchestral soundtrack from the film but this is an excellent alternative rendition. The song references the growing "romantic" feelings a Japanese officer (Sakamoto) develops for one of his British prisoners of war (David Bowie) .

Very sad! I didn't even know he was sick. He did several collaborations with Japan and Mr Sylvian. The comments reminded me of ''Risky'' which is quite a moving tune. There was a real mood to the video - especially watching it on RAGE late at night. Ryuichi Sakamoto & Iggy Pop - Risky (Music Video) [HD]

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is the film guys, and the you tube title is misleading you, this is a promotional video that was played on Top Of The Pops, T.OT.P didn't put together videos for artists.

From the '83 movie 'Merry Christmas, Mister Lawrence', starring Ryuichi Sakamoto and also David Bowie. I've heard Sakamoto's name also elsewhere. And just as Sylvian must've been influenced by Bryan Ferry, he and his Japan mates had in turn influenced bands like Duran Duran, and their Simon LeBon had done a lot of that little yodel stuff, too ...and now I have to think of a bakery in my area called 'Le Bon Pain' 😄

This is wonderful yes! :) Recommendations. YMO : Yellow Magic Orchestra. / ''Cue''. Also.. Post Punk.... (just a few miles up the road from The Chameleons) Resided Inspiral Carpets: / ''She Comes in The Fall''

Ryuichi Sakamoto was also a member of Japanese electro trio, Yellow Magic Orchestra. The video wasn't made by Top Of The Pops. The movie was ''Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'', which starred Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Bowie, Tom Conti and Australian actor, Jack Thompson. I saw the film at the cinemas when I was 18, and came out feeling deflated. I suggest trying ''Computer Games'' and ''Day Tripper'' by Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Yellow Magic Orchestra's drummer was Yukihiro Takahashi, and he also was in that Robert Palmer live clip C&C had reacted to a few weeks ago. He too had passed away this year, in January. I'm sure he and Ryuichi will be hanging out 'up there' 😌🙏

@@mightyV444 with Palmer too! Slightly off topic, but I remember Countdown/Molly trying to hype Japan on to us. We were fine with their cover of ''Don't Rain On My Parade'', but weren't mad about their image.. I liked pretty boys in glammy bands, but when they get too pretty the deal's broken with me.. Sylvian often looked too pretty for my liking.

David Sylvian did a lot of collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto. Ryuichi Sakamoto feat David Sylvian and Ingrid Chavez - Heartbeat (recommended) Also try.. Ryuichi Sakamoto & Iggy Pop - Risky Ryuichi Sakamoto featuring Holly Johnson - Love & Hate There's a lot of long compositions that he did for films and events. The three I recommended are the most immediate of his work.

I was gonna mention the movie title but The Mighty 'V' beat me to it! I believe this was a remaster/re-recording of the original. Do some more David Sylvian/Japan. There are a lot of great songs by him. Also, a fond farewell to Ryuichi Sakamoto. I didn't know he died until watching this reaction from you guys. His contributions to Sylvian and Japan were momentous. He is also famous for orchestrating the soundtrack to The Last Emperor from 1987. We will remember and honor him for his work.

I prefer the instrumental alone version and that instrumental version dominates the movie 'Merry Christmas Mister Lawrence'. Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto were very good in the movie.

I love your video reactions but I do wish you did a little homework first. And I think that about all your video reactions. I know you like convey “ a first time listening” response, but it is just a little too naive. Sylvian is sooooo much more than to be reduced to being Bryan Ferry fan/clone. Not sure he ever was. Brian Eno perhaps.
