I've got the EHX Nano Big Muff & I love it. It's the best fuzz pedal I've ever used, & the first one I got was the orange DOD Fuzz pedal back in the late 80's...so I've used a lot of them, lol. It suits my style of music, bluesy hard rock/grunge. EHX makes amazing pedals.

Love em both. Either one will give you the: Gilmour, Santana, Iommi, Ernie Isley Sound, I had an Original NYC Big Muff, but I recently purchased the Thorpy and it is Impressive: Super quiet, built like a tank. true bypass, tone shaping for days, individual note definition and Adrian Thorpy is a pleasure to do business with.

The thorpy has much better clarity and cuts through more with a bit more treble. Sounds much better, like it's had much more time getting decent tones out of it. Sounds sick

I've never bought into the idea that pedals were only great when builders didn't have a clue what they were doing. They only made what didn't exist before. A fairly easy target to hit. The talents of the time made the pedals shine. I have not heard a fuzz that compares to the Thorpy...been looking for months....Just ordered one tonight. Thanks Danish Pete..I owe you a beer.

Tried many fuzz pedals over the years, currently using the 'Big Muff Nano' with a Tc 'Mojo Mojo' Through the clean channel of a 100w Marshall hybrid. The break up is just perfect with infinite sustain. Both pedals were under £40 each.

Nice comparison. I prefer the sound of the Thorpy in this clip. The EHX sounded muddy by comparison. I have '76 Big Muff Pi which is nice but tempremental. I use a Buffalo FX Patriot at the moment which sounds huge.

Thorpy FX Mushroom Cloud sounds best :) Pros: More clarity less muddy :) Cons: Due to the size I would go with other options such as the Blackout Effectors Musket or Blunderbuss (I have this one).

The Muffroom cloud (now the fallout cloud) is the only fuzz I've ever had to buy on the spot, I tried it at the Thorpyfx stand at a show, cranked the eq and sustain knob and got the best doom sound.

Interesting demo, i just noticed that volume levels are not the same- EHX Nano Big Muff is set quieter than Thorpy which can give impression that Thorpy is way better. I couln't hear much difference except that Muffroom Cloud is little more defined and more distortion-like.
@TonyHookedonVanlife
@TonyHookedonVanlife 8 лет назад
the best Big Muff pedal is the Tone Wicker. It has a switch which completely removes the tone stack from the circuit and it's like BAM! fuzz awesomeness. That being said, Lori S. from the band Acid King told me she runs her Les Paul into a Little Big Muff straight into a Marshall JCM800, and wow, she absolutely KILLS the stoner-doom riffs touring all over the world!

The Thorpy is exceptional and probably would be easier to balance with a variety of amps. The EH was great as well but has less shaping possibilities.

@neuk01642
@neuk01642 8 лет назад
The Thorpy's active EQ alone makes it the clear winner. You can craft your tone completely compensate for the natural tonality of any amp or guitar because it doesn't just take away it actually adds. It's also built like a tank and sounds just AMAZING, it's fat, thick, round, crunchy. Yep it sounds the nuts through a Marshall but because of the EQ it can sound devastating through a Fender as well. But Jason Deli is bang on. That Pedal Show fuzz review is about as comprehensive as it will get.

@neuk01642
@neuk01642 8 лет назад
+AmzeehFTW Personally I think the Muffroom cloud would work with any amp. I think the amount of tonal variation available with the active eq means it's just so versatile. I mean you have to like fuzz, a lot because this is a brute of a pedal, but if you do and you have an amp with big mids that can handle a bit of bass and treble, no problem. You have an amp with no mids that needs the bass and treble backing off to allow the mids that are there to come through, no problem. I love my muffroom cloud. I had a Germanium 4 fuzz before and this just blows it away. Rich and full but still with definition. Has to be said, when I was shopping for this, it was a choice between the JHS Muffleta and this, and I'm glad I went for the Muffroom...

Good demo Pete. The Thorpy sounds much clearer, and part of that no doubt is it's better quality components. It definitely wins here. It depends on the amp though. Something like an AC15 might prefer a duller pedal.

The thorpe has a more modern sound, big muff so common, i'm going for the Thorpe but i like the Big muff for it's classic tone also, it's compact size also and i've always liked electro-harmonix pedals. It's a tough one, but the Thorpe being twice the price is a factor also. The thorpe does sound a bit "tighter" to me, don't know how else to say it. Based on sound alone, i like the Thorpe, it has a bit more velvet tone to it. I would have liked to hear a few more sustained single notes on each, same note side by side, just one note.

One of the main reasons I've never liked fuzz pedals is the lack of eq shaping especially with the original circuits. With the nano you have to add other pedals or own the right amp with the right guitar to make it sound good. The Thorpyfx eq controls mean I could use any amp and any guitar and it still sounds great. Suffice to say The Thorpyfx is the first fuzz I have ever bought and will ever need so the cost is more than justified

@mattgilbert7347

Luis Sutil I don't really like the Strymon delays with the Timeline being the exception. All the others have a kind of "sheen" or "gloss" to the repeats. When I hear Strymon, I hear P&W music. I believe in separation of Church and Rock. I got the new MXR Echoplex pedal and my El Cap was posted for sale the next day. Overall, my favorite delay is the TC Vintage (or T-Rex Replica, they are identical circuits). It's the perfect delay (even if it doesn't do dotted eighths, but that's what my trusty DD-7 is for). For "mega delays" I'd take a Source Audio Nemesis over a Timeline. Even though there is no analog dry through, the preamp modeling is so good that it doesn't matter. And it has so much capacity for deep dive editing and MIDI control, for a lower price than the Timeline.

If the Nano Big Muff didn't cut out the treble frequencies as much. They'd both be similar I think. But more expensive pedals are always going to be more favourable as there will have been more time spent achieving certain tones.

Honestly I think these to have settles into their niche markets well enough. If you're looking for a stage-rig pedal that gets the job done at high volumes, the Big Muff Pi works, but the Muffroom Cloud is certainly worth the money and I'd say go for that one if you can afford it.

the muffroom cloud has more eq.....and if you need that its great...but for what i would be using it for...the eh has all the eq i need. i would actually look into the chinese pedals if it was me....joyo...tone city....donner...eno. they all have fuzz pedals that are probably copies of the muff. the only fuzz i use is the octave up thing personally. but if i needed this sound in my rig that's the way i'd go. the muffroom cloud would be over kill for me. but its a great sounding pedal and you'd not be going wrong if you went with it.

Thorpy is was better at articulation and full chords. Could be used as a full bodied distortion. Seen one on Ed O’Brien board. Harry Plays guitar channel was chatting with me and recommended it….that’s how I found out about it. I was using a Sky King similar to him, and was trying to find a Muff that could have more clarity. I’d like to see it compared to the tone wicker as well! My thing is the Muff has a lot of low end which I love. But when turning up tone it becomes way too fizzy to me. I feel my Warm Audio Foxxy sounds just as good if not better than this Muff. The Thorpy I could see using a lot and also a RAT with some overdrives. Expensive pedal though! But the Muff has that low end going on. That’s why I think maybe the Tone Wicker or an EQ pedal could keep the low and just bump the high a tiny bit. That’s all it’s missing to me for that good 90s sound. I dislike brittle fuzz for Rhythm, and always look for fuzzes I can play full songs with. Probably main reason I’ve been stuck on a RAt.

For the money, the nano wasn't bad... but it kind of went to shit when you touched the tone knob. You did kind of cheat it though, because for 75% of the video, you had the volume turned up much louder on the Thorpy. That made fair comparison nearly impossible. That said, as an owner of a Thorpy, I can say that it is a beast. It is so dynamic, and it can be dialed in to so many different tones. The nano is a little more one dimensional.

(we also know the guys quite like the Two Rock and the Lazy J and we all know the origin of those amps :). But you are welcome to pop in to the store and we will be happy to hook up a JCM800 half stack for you so you can try the pedals out. In fact, anyone is welcome to come in and try that..

No, a Muff kinda pedal sounds best into a clean tube on the edge of breakup (ask Dave Gilmour or Daniel and Mick from ThatPedalShow). A Fuzz Face sounds best in an overdriven amp, but not a Muff!

Change the guitars and the amps. The aim of your videos should be to reach as many people as possible. Right now it seems focused on Strat/Fender amp players. Mix the guitars and amps up. And how about a blind test at the end? Both pedals set up to sound as similar as possible, with the results posted in the text below. If you use any of my ideas please send me a Boss SD-1 as a prize.
