You`ve got the right haircut for masking (as me😁). I was struggeling with an actors hair floating in the wind. In these situations, greenscreen is (still) more relyable.

This is an "ideal" example of how the Magic Mask works. It's a short clip and very little movement. Davinci has a hard time on longer clips with more camera and subject movement. For those situations, stick with a green screen!

It works when it works, but unlike greenscreen, it doesn't always work, and requires a lot of baby sitting if the camera moves, the background is complex, etc.

Green screen doesn't always work either and that is after decades of development. Both technologies are useful. One big disadvantage of chroma keying is when your target includes the same colour as the key and punches holes in the resulting images. Another is you have to intentionally shoot against a chroma key background - you can't decide in post to run a chroma key. On the flip side, being intentional can also be an advantage - it improves the quality of the final video. It's a case of knowing your tools and when to use them.

@@darbethbusinesstechnologya9965 Yes agree. But you can learn all the caveats of green screen, and work around them deliberately, whereas with "auto-roto" if and when it will fail is very hard to predict.

For people not already using Resolve, it would have been a little more visual to show the mask, as it was being selected.

I did show the mask as it was being selected. In resolve all you have to do is draw a line on the item you want to mask. AI knows what the item is and selects it.

@@JaredHoyman The mask as in Overlayed in Red, this way you know visually if you have to get the ear or not. It just feedback, I do know how to use it but thought others might benefit from a more visual delivery.

@@JaredHoyman Another tip: Keep in mind, one reason it's called a "Magic Mask" is that you don't have to draw the whole thing. Experiment with minimizing how much 'doodling' you're doing with the selection tool. With objects that contrast well with the background, it is often enough to draw a simple line, that is just long enough to cross the representative colors. For instance, it would have almost certainly have been enough to draw a diagonal line across the flag, starting in the star field, crossing at least one star, and just a few of the stripes. This not only saves time, but when there is a lot of motion, drawing a 'stick person' all over your subject can quickly fall apart, as they move around the scene (usually, something like an arm, will become 'unanchored' and move out onto the background, adding that to the mask). If you simply draw a line from their hair, down the middle of their face and neck, through their shirt, and just onto the top of their pants, the AI figures out that the arms, legs and hands are attached (turning on the mask highlight, lets you know at a glance, what it 'knows' about your object, so you can adjust if needed). Planning, as you would for a green screen, can also be very helpful. Avoid wearing an outfit that effectively camouflages you against your background.

It is an absolute system hog though and really frustrating for people that are doing long videos. Where a green screen takes hardly any resources at all. There is a way to export the resulting matte and use it and free up resources but might be a bit technical for this video. One of the problems I have found with Magic Mask is that it doesn't free up the resources after the computing has taken place. So once bogged down it constantly keeps using the resources. Photoshop is an example of a process where you applhy the mask, then you can refine it and save the matte to use as a background mask. Once you commit to it, it releases the resources. I hope BMD keeps working on this though. They have all but abandoned some things like face refinement which had a major flaw of not being able to edit the initial overlay - so if it goes off track, you are left helpless in repairing the tracking. I guess we will eventually see. But green screen is still a better option for making sure it all works. For now.

It probably depends on what computer you are using. My M2 Max cuts through magic mask like butter and makes a rtx3080 gpu look like a celeron pc from 1999.

For those asking/commenting about when Magic Mask does/doesn't work, it's about having a clear separation between the subject and everything else. It's not necessarily about camera movement or busy backgrounds. In the example video used, it is hard to NOT include the chair. Another potentially difficult situation is when something moves in front of the subject and interrupts the tracking process.

I still pay for LR and Photoshop but only use LR. I use the FREE Open Source “Gimp” instead of photoshop. I find it easy and quick. Great alternative for people who don’t want to pay for photoshop, but need the creative power.

This looks great, but what if it's not just a talking video but a fighting sceen, or something with a lot of movement, and a camera on a dolly and 360 degree shots (Like the matrix). Would this still work out or it's more for talking head video ?

This feature is near on useless if doing anything more than something static in front of a plain background. Doing anything more and you end having to near fix every frame. Took me 3 days to do a 4 minute video... I could of hand masked in that time.

magic mask is ok, but anytime you start editing the magic mask clip, for example a simple transform, it breaks the mask, then you gotta get into re-rendering out the masked footage which can be annoying if you have many clips that are using the effect. So in many regards depending on what you are doing, green screen is still very much alive. If davinci can get that magic mask working where I don't need to re-render the clip out, then we'll be talkin ;)

@@notnoodelz3036 just use magic mask in fusion instead of color tab. And you won’t lose the mask. I still do it color sometimes because it’s faster but it’s annoying when it losses the mask and I have to redo it

Good thing you have no hair, magic mask doesn't like hair, especially my wife's long flowing hair. I used the same properly lit green screen clip that Davinci Resolve (Delta Keyer in Fusion tab) took 1 click and 5 seconds to pull, and I spent about an hour with Magic Mask on the exact same clip and it still wont key and track her hair, or even just key one single frame. So not an alternative to green screen, but maybe good for a random clip where you have no other choice.
