Sweden getting to choose the super slow clay was a huge advantage. Mac was unbeatable that year only losing three matches. Two were on clay. Clay was both Mac and Connor’s worst surface.
True, but Henrik Sundström was very good in Davis cup that year. He also beat Lendl on clay so that he beat Mcenroe was not a suprise, considereing french open 84. Wilander almost never lost to Connors in Atp on any surface. But the ultra slow bad surface was an advantage. The Swedish team was young and united in the task. The Usa team..not.
Yes and they watered them like crazy to make them as slow and muddy as possible. But that’s Davis cup - the home team tailors the surface as much as possible to their advantage.
Jimmy lost one point to Mats. Mac lost to Sundström, and then he and Peter Flemming lost to Edberg and Jarryd. And that was it: 3-0. So I don't see any reason why Jimmy alone should be blamed for the disaster. The US team was just not good enough that year.
I love Connors here. He was veeery close of being disqualified for his behaviour. You should not behave that way but this was Jimmy Connors so I approve anyway :)
Also caused disaster the next year with Mac not playing for a while due to overbearing demands form the usta. Mac was unfairly Judged as part of the problem when even Arthur Ashe admitted Mac had been good (for once) and that Connors had been the problem. Connors in his defence was said to be edgy all week and not wanting to be there bc his wife was due at the time.
Another thing McEnroe and Fleming had never lost a Davis Cup double together ,they had 14 straight wins.Do you mean they had never played on clay before leaving Edberg Jarryd?
