Took a few months but I just got mine, so far a big Thumbs Up! Bought it to be my devoted drumset interface as I play a huge kit and will eat up the 18 XLR ins with little compromise. Awesome! No light pipe, no combining interfaces, easy peasy. My main interface is a 4 channel Audient iD44 for vocal/instrument tracking. I'm in home studio heaven! Thanks for this video, I've watched it many times as I waited for it to arrive. Kind regards!

This looks great! I am considering one as the basic inputs for all my synths... shame that the card only record stereo does not record all the channels individually as that would have been awesome. I have the Model 12 and that feature is amazing... I like playing improv and editing after the fact... so a computer will be needed for that...

Thank you! Not yet on the rack. We switched up the studio in June to make things more efficient. Before the switch up, the gear was split into three rack shelfs. Now it's mostly in a tall server rack we got off of Amazon. Will make a vid on it at some point but it's gonna be awhile (got a ton of projects in the pipeline).

So after about a month with my Onyx24, I am missing my Tascam (updated from Model16 because wanted more ins and outs in my small synth studio setup). This thing sounds awesome don't get me wrong, but that's the only thing I like about it. What I miss from Tascam: - Inputs outputs on top vs in back (mixer on Jaspers stand against a wall, so reaching back there and figuring out what's what in my middle age is no fun) - More selectable routing with push-button function - One knob compressor: for me it's become a necessary item since I'm new and not great at gain staging, but also I intend to mostly do live stuff and all my recordings will reflect that for the most part. But like he says everyone has their own workflow, and others have said here, I might be too ignorant to know what it is I want and need (I've been through a few mixers since I began this journey three years ago). Awesome review, though. Love your style bro.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video!!!! I'm finally getting around to getting mine hooked up and I decided to sit down and re-watch this about 10 more times jotting down all the great setup options and limitations you provided!! In a very short time and very efficient manner, you covered basically everything I needed to know for my new setup!! Very Much Appreciated!!! Great job and you deserve many KUDOS for your presentation style and explaining things very VERY well!!! *One thing you brought up was needing another audio interface to output from the DAW to use the Mackie as a "touchy feely" mixer...... Just a simple question..... Would my Steinberg UR-242 work for that? It's a basically a 2/4 channel audio interface that is pretty solid.... I'm thinking that would be fine??? And if not too much to ask (and I think I ask for many) how would this be hooked up to the Mackie?? You seem to be the only person who knows this specific stuff!!! LOL!!! :)
@andystandys

I think you'd need something like a Behringer UMC1820 (18x20) - something that has enough outputs coming out of it that you could feed them all back into each channel in the mixer.

Thanks a lot! I didn't know that this came out. But the lack of usb playback switches for each channel makes it worthless for me. Not at least because I'd like to connect it to my mpc and be able to mix my hardware synths with mpc stuff. The same would be when I use ableton. I wonder why you didn't mention the soundcraft mtk22. I was thinking mtk22 or model 24. Now I'm going to buy the model 12 for it's portability and the 2 headphone outs.

I'm considering buying Onyx12 as a small tracking console for my home studio. I had previously AH Zed16R but it broke. I am doing mainly easy recordings. People come and want to record their vocal using pre recorded karaoke tracks as backing music. I do have an Audient evo16 audio soundcard but making monitor mixes on that is complicated. I think using Onyx12 doing traking (recording/overdubs) would be good as I can use the onboard fx unit to the headphone mix (Nobody like to sing dry). And the 4 usb out channels (from the DAW into the mixer) would be enough to send a monitor mix to the artist. I use Focusrite ISA One as Mic pre into line input. For mixdown and summing I would consider Mackie 2404VLZ4 or 3204VLZ4 as it have insert on every mono channel, on every subgroup, even on every aux channel. My Audient have 2xadat out + 8 analog so 24 outputs.

I still use my Soundcraft Signature analog mixer all the time. I tried going without it and I missed the subtle analog vibes it adds to my sound while tracking. About 1/2 time I make the effort to use it for mixing and summing too. I do have “better” 500 series gear… but something about the mixer format appeals to me more. The only thing I use more is my UA 4-710d.

Sorry I am confused. At the end you mention that this mixer is USB multi-tracking. Somewhere in the video you also mention that it can't be used as a SD card multi-tracking recorder? Sorry I am new to this and I did buy this mixer yet to be delivered. I am planning on connecting 3 synthesizers and using Presonus studio live. So what I would like to do is record one of the keyboards arpeggios, then adding more synths to my song. So each synth would use 2 channels. Can I record directly to the SD card and stage the sounds as I like? Can I also add my electronic drum kit and or a guitar and stage those as well? Panning left right?

Regarding the 23/24 channel: On my Onyx 1640i I also have to use 13/14(system) and 15/16(DAW) for Audio output from the Computer. So I only use 12 channels, which is way enough if you don't want to record a whole band

Totally agree! Plenty of channels. Our synth studio use-case is a bit extreme with the number of inputs we typically use. We have a couple "stations" in the studio and the MOTU interface allows us to route everything into the DAW at any point.

My main issue with a lot of these mixers is that it takes a huge amount of space with features that I don't need or want. The EQ section is the worst offender because I'm only interested in recording and I'm always gonna EQ in the DAW, so I would prefer to not have so much space taken up with EQ knobs. My current interface/mixer is a KMI K-mix, which solves this problem in an interesting way with a really flexible interface. The Zoom LiveTrack stuff has a similar cleverly designed interface to reduce the number of knobs and physical real estate. I wish there were more "compact" products like that.
@Noise-Conductor

@Poetic Noise you guys aren't using the tools as intended but bitching about the design... You want physical eq knobs for live audio... For recording you do not want to use an analog mixer... u can. But the sound quality degrades with each piece of electronics u put between the mic and harddrive... A better use of ur money is to buy 1 stereo pre amp and 1 good quality interface. That's literally all u need for recording nowadays. You only get a console for recording and mixing when you are tracking bands and need the faster workflow of a console. When u can just reach and turn a knob and have all the tracks right there it dramatically saves time. Yall are getting shit u don't need or can use then bitching about it... Hi Anthony, that's how the Onyx mixers are setup. The last channel pair is the whole mix on the board. You can even switch it to send to channel 1/2 for things like OBS Studio etc ... If you want to track the drum machine separately, you'll need to patch it into a different set of channels. That 13/14 channel is more of a live convenience channel.

I love that they made it a 96K interface but it can only record multitrack the major downside to this if you read the manual is it can only bring back 2 stereo channels to the mixer so you can only mix 4 channels at mixdown. What a bummer. The EQ as far as I can tell from reading the manual does not get recorded since the converter is before the EQ. So basically it's a Analog mixer for small bands to rehearse with and record their practice with. I would have bought one for on location recording if it would have had better audio routing but for now it's basically just a 18x4 channel usb interface with 18 mic inputs and 4 DAW returns. The 96K is what really peaked my interest since I work at that sampling rate but it is a no go for me. So I will still have to wait until someone makes a good workable interface/mixer combo for me. I have tracked with a console for well over 25 years and have a 56 channel soundcraft MH-2 in my studio right now. The mackie would have been a great companion for on location recording but the it's just not up to modern standards. I will still have to drag around an Allen & Heath SQ6 for for on location sessions for bands that want to record at their rehearsal space. Great review by the way!! I subscribed, its nice to see honesty in pro audio reviews!! Cheers!
@BattleAngelSound
@BattleAngelSound Год назад
It seems that it's not going to happen to have Post-EQ/Post-Fader Multitrack recording via USB. Not in that price range anyway. It's what I need really. It seems that we are in minority and everyone is doing mixers Pre-EQ, because "you don't want to print EQ to your tracks". I thin that I'll take it anyway because I need a mixer for my synths and I work in 96kHz. I wanted to take Soundcraft MTK but it seems to affect sound in a way that I don't like (making it mushy, soft), then one of Allen&Heath mixers but then I realized that it's recoding only in 16Bits like it's 90s once again :D And it's like that will all of them: if one has feature X, then Y is missing, other has feature Y but Z is missing etc. Maybe one day, maybe.
@mgmg116
@mgmg116 Год назад
Why are y'all recording in 96KHz anyway? Is there a specific request made of you to provide material at 96KHz? Because there is literally no other reason (other than time-stretching audio) to record/work in anything above 48KHz
@joesalyers
@joesalyers Год назад
@@mgmg116 Well I do since labels request hi-res sessions for archiving and have been for about 10 years. 96K is the actual standard for label releases since their are outlets that provide digital downloads of hi-res content. There are benifits to 96K and aliasing is a real issue. You can blame the Lavery company for making 96K a standard since his white paper on the matter explained in detail why 64K would be the proper sampling rate but since we don't really have 64K sampling rate labels choose 96K. Universal which has 30 different labels under it's umbrella has required hi-res sessions since 2013, and DSD masters. They cater to audiophiles now days because of Hi-res digital & vinyl sales. Audiophiles are the only ones really buying digital audio since everyone else just listens to spotify or youtube music. But I thought the mackie would be a cool little tool for going to a bands rehearsal space and doing demos with it before they come into the studio and work on a proper record. If you are putting out your own music then 48K is fine but I do have the majority of my clients and their labels ask for the session to be done at 96k and its their money and their music so I just do my job. It's not my place to tell them that 96K is not important because if its important to them then I do it. It's my day job and I don't get to tell them no, since they would go somewhere else to get exactly what they want. Cheers.
@BattleAngelSound
@BattleAngelSound Год назад
@@mgmg116 I moved to 96kHz a few years ago when I discovered that some plugins (synths and distortion effects mainly) sound better in higher sample rate. I didn't bother with oversampling and waiting when other devs will bring that option (now it's more common). It's simply easier to set project to e.g. 96kHz and forget. I work as a sound designer and yes, pitch-shifting and other pitch manipulation are quite common for me. Besides that, sometimes I also like to take a recording of a synth and slow down it by let's say 50%. With higher sample rate I'm not loosing any quality + I can hear what was hidden above my hearing range :) Actually there are reasons why it's worth to work in higher sample rates. You can read for example 'working ITB at higher sampling rates' written by Variety of Sounds - a plugin developer.

I’ve wasted a lot of $$ on mackie gear that sounded great but didn’t last more than a year. Mackie tried to blame power being dirty. I eventually had a pretty expensive AC rig with a copper wire that went out into the yard and hooked to a grounding rod hammered 3 feet deep into the ground. Still had capacitor failure. I have owned 8 pairs of Mackie monitors, I kept buying them because I liked the sound and at first I believed them that it may have been my fault (it wasn’t, it wasn’t until I tried to fix them myself that I found out they put a .20 cent capacitor when a 1.50 capacitor would have made all the difference in the world. I just wish I could find a mixer this good that has 6+ stereo in, but I need it to last ! It’s not about money it’s about having a studio you can rely on .

Good review 👍. In the 80s this mixer would have cost serious dough! My humble Tascam 244 cost me three months wages. Amazing value we get these days. This one isn't for me though this could replace the multiple mixers I have in my studio. The split is actually useful - I don't have a fixed setup so I have one mixer for jamming/recording and another mixer for my keyboard rack for having fun during my piano practice - Mozart on a Wurly? Why not? 😎 I have a 90s Spirit Folio that has similar limitations. I don't find it too bad to use the two pre-fade sends as my recording outputs to my MPC One but confusion can arise if I forget to turn them back down! If I'm recording I'll use the stereo inputs for stereo synths but if I'm mixing direct to stereo I avoid feeding stereo keyboards that way because apart from hitting the mono button the quickest way to narrow a mix is to stack hard-panned stereo synths - the exception being wide ambient pads. For returns it is handy to be able to low-cut effects to avoid mud and dip the upper mids to make space.

Solid points! And yes, the value is crazy compared to 20-30 years ago. We're all spoiled producers today 🤣🤣

I thought you were wrong with the missing ability of multitrack recording to SD-card. On their product page, Mackie says "Multitrack Recording via USB or SD card, up to 24-bit/96kHz", which I understood as it is written. But if one looks into the manual, one sees that you can only record the stereo mix to SD. I find the statement on the product page really misleading. I mean, multitrack is more than two tracks...

There are some differences that do seem to me to be very wide between a Tascam Model 24 and this one. First, and most important: the quality of the preamps. In my experience I would not record with Tascam preamps, the results are not satisfactory. The Onyx preamps are quite decent and I would put them in the upper mid-range. The difference in the A/D - D/A converters is wide. I speak from my experience. The second is the sampler rate between the two. Tascam only records 16/24 - 44.1 and 16/24 - 48 kHz. Mackie Onyx records at 24 - 96 kHz which is a big difference. I think if you are looking for a result close to professional, you can not save yourself from having to route the analog outputs of your interfaces to the console to make your mix down with a better dynamic range and with better quality and adding more possibilities in the mix by adding external hardware such as a 500 series, for example. I think there are differences between a render and a bounce.
@mgmg116
@mgmg116 Год назад
In all honesty, most of these manufacturers could forget about 96KHz on their converters and consider putting more I/O into the unit's production budget instead. Higher samplerates are only useful if you're heavily time-stretching or if a client has made that specific demand, there's literally no other reason to go above 48KHz. Plus, these mixers (MTK 22, Model 24, Livetrak L-20, etc) only have like 2-5 auxes and few onboard channels with inserts as well as line ins. The whole point of a mixer is flexible routing and sacrificing I/O while upping samplerate to improve overhead makes no sense when you consider it's literally defeating the purpose of having a mixer in the first place

What a nice example of a review being objective although a device was sent over for free. Thanks for that! Such a device would be beyond my hobby producer scope, however I guess if it _was_ relevant for me, I'd certainly miss some routing capabilities on it. But I guess it's always risky to project (home) studio expectations onto something which is traditionally more geared towards mixing live performances...

My guess is a 16 channel would be more than enough for most people. The USB multi-tracking is what really sets it apart, even from the VLZ line and blends it into a studio/live mixer. Thanks for watching 🙏

@@TeftyMeems My dream mixer would have the whole channel design flipped over: Very few mono / mic channels, plenty of stereo channels, 5 pre-fader stereo (FX) sends and returns or so etc... I guess a lot of my cravings could be solved much easier by instead using a decent patch bay though.

Mackie try to compete with tascam model 24. The same features, the same odd things. Compared to Onyx 1640i - eq section is no more 4-channel; Auxes - twice less; inserts - only on 4 channels; no direct outs no groups; no master inserts; no sub outs, because no subgroups. I hope they kept the talkback mic.. The good things - bluetooth; usb compared to firewire; sd card option. The idea for going from computer to outboard mixer is to be able to mix outside of the box. Otherwise why to do such a thing? With this cut-offs it is no longer possible.

I have been looking the Onyx series mixers. I have Mackie Pro Fx10v3 mixer but my eyes are on the Tascam Model 12 which one you think is better The Onyx series or The Tascam Model 12. I want to be able to EQ and Compress before the Daw and it’s printed in the Daw. I think the Tascam allows you to do that. Which board has the best sound quality.
@TeftyMeems

Hi Lucius, I think the Onyx takes the edge in overall sound quality. The Tascam is the only one with a compressor, but I wouldn't rely on it for everything (it's more of a "compress in a live situation" type of compressor). Both are great honestly, just keep in mind the limitations 👍

Thanks Tony! I'd agree on the live sound angle if it wasn't for the USB multi-tracking. Currently the VLZ4 can only output a stereo mix from the board, so this Onyx board is way more flexible on the recording/USB side than the VLZ4. Now if the VLZ line added full USB multi-tracking 👀

I am doing that all the time. None of those mixers are for synth musicians. So many preamps which we never use. If ever, I would need 2. However, I put Outputs L and R of Synth A into Mix In 1 & 2, pan Channel 1 to L and Channel 2 to R. Next synth, B, same on Mixer Channels 3 and 4. Yes, it feels weird, and I think it's idiotic, but you won't find a Mixer that is only for us. Except something like Behringer RX1602. I also use that. It's a bit sparse . I was looking at the Soundcraft GB4 because it has 32 channels, and was going to pair it up with a pair (or trio, for more outboard processing) of Ferrofish Pulse converters and an RME Digiface. But if I can get something cheaper to set up, I will.
