Horror's Hallowed Grounds - Episode 25: Dawn of the Dead. This episode was a labor of love for me. The Dawn of the Dead locations have been done to death (no pun intended) so I wanted to do something different. I first visited the Monroeville Mall location back in August of 1993 when 5 friends and I took our first out of state (California) trip to a horror convention. It was the Zombie Jamboree that was being held at the convention center right across the street from the Monroeville Mall which was the principle locations used in the 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead. This was the weekend that I got the movie location bug. So this is the weekend that HHG was essentially born. So instead of doing a conventional HHG episode I have used video footage & photographs my friends and I shot that weekend back in 1993 when the mall looked almost exactly like it did in the film. It's also a fun look back at mall culture and life back in 1993. Combined with more footage & photos from various years up until 2019 showing the evolution of the mall. This was a lot of work to put together but a lot of fun too. I hope you enjoy it as well. SUBSCRIBE → bit.ly/2TAyK0B

Thanks for the memories, I used to go to Monroeville Mall all through the 70s. Its funny when they filmed that in 1978, nobody made a big deal about it. It felt like a normal event.

Tom is such a humble and down to earth guy. I met him some years back at Monsterpalooza in Palm Springs, he was basically sitting in a booth un-noticed by everyone walking around. I totally took that opportunity to have a few minutes to talk. I grew up in PA, so it was nice to talk to someone else from PA while I was stuck in CA.

I was 12 years old back in 1993 and absolutely obsessed with this movie. Now I go to living dead weekend every year and have been fortunate enough to go on several of Larry’s tours. Went there in May of 2006. I parked right under the '30' sign and knew it was meant to be! Pennys was still there as well as the wood bridge, the lighting and the steps. Crazy to see that even in 1993, Naturalizer Shoes and Pup-a-go-go were still in their same spots!

Great footage Sean! I want to like Tom Savini, and I've been a fan of his work for a long time. Unfortunately when I met him at DragonCon in Atlanta, he was very dismissive and cold. Me and a friend were so excited to see and meet him at his booth, but he basically stared a whole through us and didn't say a word, just nodded a bit like he was too good to talk to us.

I really enjoy your videos Sean. Your attention to detail is second to none. I watched your Silence Of The Lambs video yesterday while waiting for my Daughter to finish school. My favorite video of H.H.G. is the Original Elm St. Video. I myself am extremely sentimental when it comes to old movies and locations and it sucks to see some Killjoys trying to stop you filming an elevator of all things. Keep em' coming brother. Cheers from Sydney.

Your friends are hilarious so are you it was cool seeing you with your long hair. And the grain in the film really brings up the nostalgic charm. It’s really cool that you got to see it when the mall had JC pennies, I understand it’s now a Cinemark. The background music you have for this video is so freaking awesome! I’m gonna watch this video again and again, you really covered some really cool stuff with this. A lot of people have filmed the mall, but few have captured the way it looked back in the early 90s this was really cool! thank you Sean🤘🏻❤️🎃🤘🏻

Been waiting on you doing an episode on Dawn. I was at Monroeville Mall in July 2019. I missed the Living Dead Weekend by weeks. I was gutted but it was still great to visit the mall, Evens City Cemetery and The Living Dead Museum. I was in heaven visiting those locations that seemed like a life time away for this Belfast kid who grew up watching these movies. I hope to get back there next year when things are hopefully back to normal. My brother in law lives in Pittsburgh so he will have driving duties once again when I return to quench my thrist for the Dead locations. Another great episode, Sean! The "negative lady" reminded me of when I visited the Monroeville Mall back in 2018. I wound up getting hassled by a security guard while I was taking a few photos/videos around where the iconic J.C. Penny "No room in hell" scene occurred. He was claiming that I couldn't take photos of the mall interior unless I was taking photos of a friend or some such B.S. After arguing with him for a few minutes, he finally left me alone thankfully, so I was able to continue to get pictures of most of the remaining iconic spots. I think some of the employees there just get bored occasionally and feel compelled to harass the horror fans over nothing essentially. On a lighter note, I found it especially interesting when I visited that Dawn of the Dead actually wasn't the only movie to shoot at the Monroeville Mall, as The Fault in Our Stars (2014) featured a brief scene that was shot inside the Barnes and Noble Starbucks location there as well.

@@malfuncsean There is a shot early in the film where Shailene Woodley is sitting at a table with Laura Dern watching a group of girls go up an escalator as well. I'm not entirely sure but I think that might have been shot around at the food court in the mall. All I can confirm is the Barnes and Noble and the fact that they shot the film mostly around around the Pittsburgh area.
