Would it be a total buzz kill to find out one day when you decide to open your streaming service and see some of your digital copies gone in an instant? What if you didn't have the chance to pick up a physical copy as a backup when it was put on store shelves at your local retailer months or years prior? Chances are, it's happening much more frequently, and that's a sad, hard pill to swallow. Today, let's talk about a film that has disappeared in the ether when it comes to physical and digital release. Let's discuss George A. Romero's 1978 zombie epic, Dawn of the Dead.

This is gonna be a buzzkill comment… But I work at a Goodwill warehouse. Everyday I throw away entire garbage bins of records, cassettes, vhs, dvd, and Blu-ray media into our compactor which then gets transported right into the landfill. Capitalism is destroying physical media cause it’s not “profitable.” So if anyone sees this comment: Please do not donate physical media. Even if say a family member dies…find a home for their media. Have a good old fashioned garage sale if you must.

Yup. Same. Also have original Star Wars trilogy and THX 1138 on laserdisc because they're the highest quality edition you can purchase that haven't been ruined by wretched 90s CGI. Also, people losing access to their digital purchases isn't new. Happened to everyone who bought music on Microsoft's music store. When the PlaysForSure authentication servers went down, everybody lost access to their music. There also reports on Reddit of people losing access to their purchased digital content as Amazon loses distribution rights.

@@Keymagination This as well. For the longest time, there wasn't a way to make a complete, functional, ISO of a blu-ray movie. People kept telling me, "Just rip the movie!" NO. @@danbollinger9372 I think he's pretty clear about it being available in foreign releases. Also, i find that hardcore movie afficionados think that everyone is willing to import, pay higher prices, or buy requisite equipment. The majority of the viewing/buying public doesn't "go big". This is a total humblebrag but George Romero visited Fan Expo Toronto one year and I managed to get my ultimate edition of Dawn of the Dead signed by him. This is one of those films where I’ve pretty much owned every edition of it. I have the Elite CAV LaserDisc box set along with the Republic Pictures CLV Open Matte release. In addition to those, I have the Anchor Bay 4 disc DVD set and Blu-ray (which I was able to grab at FYE for six bucks shortly after it went out of print) along with the Second Sight 4K limited edition set and standard Blu-ray set. George A. Romero‘s Martin is another casualty that shares the same fate with Dawn of the Dead. The rights issues are pretty much identical, and you can only get an overseas Blu-ray or 4K of it. Regardless, I still have the original Anchor Bay and Lionsgate releases of Martin, in addition to the Second Sight limited edition 4K.

All of the legal wrangling over rights and such is why a kid like me in the late 80s, having discovered the Romero-verse of zombies, social decay, civil collapse, and feral human survivors during that era, had a helluva time getting our hands on "Dawn of the Dead" from our local video rental store. I couldn't find it anywhere close to me.

Not scary. 3) The constant (and I mean CONSTANT) BICKERING between the military guys and the others . Again. Not scary. That said : Here's what was good: The underground tunnel caves (very scary!), the gore effects were at that perfection level. Lori Cardialle was great (basically - she was Fran and Peter and FlyBoy -all rolled into one person) . The other stars of the movie were- just OK. The ending was great - the island - perfect. I was 9 when cable finally made it to our small midwestern town & for the first 90 days all new customers were provided with every movie channel as a free sample (at that time, 3 majors only: HBO/SHO/the Movie Channel). Knowing our parents were not the easy up-sell types, my brother & I needed to dive in & watch as many movies as possible before that trial period was over. Dawn Of The Dead (1978 version) was one of our favorite. We watched it multiple times & have always shared fond memories involving that new era in entertainment delivery as a standout moment in our childhood. Thank u for inspiring my trip down memory lane. I love ur channel, thank u for the content & consistency. Never a bad video, a bar I wouldnt set for any product or service, so u have certainly exceeded my expectations. Happy Holidays 🥳✌🏻🧟‍♂️

I managed to acquire the Achor Bay release of Dawn on Bluray. I had heard that the person who currently holds the rights to the film was asking for ridiculous sums of money to have it re-scanned or re-issued or especially placed on a new format like 4K UHD. It was something like, $30 million? Usually, the most that rights holders charge is like $100,000. So that gives you some perspective on how the rights holder is more or less holding the title hostage until someone wants to make him a millionaire over night. The reason no boutique or studio is going to pay that price tag is because even with great sales, you wouldn't profit $30 million. You would lose money almost certainly. There is but only one way other than this person giving up or selling off the rights. That is if someone wanted to crowdfund to pay for the rights with the expressed desire to see the film on a modern-day format with zero hope for profit.

The same thing is happening with the pilot of Doctor Who. Someone feels they’re entitled to more money than they were offered and are keeping it hostage. Gatekeeping is pretty much the term for it sadly. True fans wouldn’t hold rights to a classic hostage but of course, the people holding Who and Dawn hostage aren’t true fans, they’re just greedy jerks. The fans pay for their greed and, due to this, we can’t have a true ultimate edition of an amazing movie.

I own the Anchor Bay box set version(s). I no longer have the theatrical version that came with it. My nephew whined and cried because he couldn't find a copy so I gave it to him. But I have another theatrical version from Anchor Bay. Regardless, I have them. That's all that matters. And I'm from Pittsburgh, where this movie was filmed.

First time I watched Dawn of the Dead was around 2005. It was my friend's DVD copy and I was house sitting for him. He moved away and may have donated his DVD. When my movie collecting kicked into high gear, I kicked myself for not grabbing it - although I managed to grab a few of his other movies. It was difficult to track down another copy but I got one by random chance when my mom was on vacation and texted me to ask what movies I was looking for. I have recently seen copies for sale at my favourite movie store in town but they have since been purchased. I was out movie hunting yesterday and came across a DVD copy of Starman - also hard to find. It was at a thrift store for 3.99 but I already have a special Blu-ray release that costed me a fair amount more. Also came across a double feature DVD of Cocoon 1 and 2 - one movie covered in another JoBlo video and Cocoon is listed on my favourite movie store website although unsure if they still have it.

_"I'll watch Zack Snyder's remake instead"_ Umm, no. I was ok with the zombies running, because Return of the Living Dead is one of my all time favorite zombie movies. But when they started crawling on the ceilings and leaping like The Fly, that lost me. Before you say "but the zombies can talk in RotLD" there is also an element of camp/comedy in that film, where Dawn is supposed to be taking itself seriously.

I have both the Second Sight 4K releases of this, the big box set with 2 books and soundtrack and the smaller movie only set. To watch the region locked Blu-ray, I use my PS3 which has been tweaked to play all region discs and my 4K player for the 4K discs.

Got my copy years ago and didn't even know it would be scarce, also got Day of the Dead, and Land of the Dead. I was on a G.R. Zombie movie binge years ago and didn't know about these old movies as I was really small and too young to understand them or even know about them when they originated, so a baby yeah. found about and bought all the movies by chance after going to the movie Dawn of the Dead 2004 with my brother and then learning Dawn of the Dead modern version was actually a re-imagining of the OG movie.
