Dawn of the Dead is my favorite zombie film. I never had such a "DAMMIT!!!" reaction to a character being bitten than Roger. I liked how Peter and Fly Boy started to become friends, almost out of necessity and lack of options after Roger died. I know Fly Boy seemed pathetic but if it wasn't for him, they wouldn't have been able to fly away at the end, because Fly Boy taught her.

Absolutely thee best Zombie movie ever.It captures that impending horror that’s engulfing the human race better than any other Zombie movie/TV show.While I thought the first season of THE WALKING DEAD was excellent,especially when Rick and his people ended up at the CDC and encountered Dr Jenner,DAWN OF THE DEAD 💀 for me captures it better than any.The set pieces for example starting at the TV studio and the sense of disbelief at what’s happening,the WACO type siege at the Housing project,the four survivors meeting at the docks and escaping the city in the helicopter,seeing how the apocalypse has spread across the countryside,nearly coming to grief at the abandoned airfield,finding the shopping mall,the death of Roger,the eventual boredom in the mall,the battle with the bikers,the death of Stephen and finally Fran and Peter escaping the mall.I won’t ruin it for you Skeletalk with the other George Romero Zombie movies or the 2004 DAWN OF THE DEAD remake,they’re for you to watch.But this is thee classic.💀💀💀

@@skeletalk A silly one, yes, but probably the most everyman character in the movie. Most of us would be even less useful (he could fly a chopper). The dynamics between the four characters really works. Great reaction, and so few reactors have done these films. You also did well to watch the theatrical release IMO. It is the best paced and has the most original score. If you watch the original Night of the Living Dead (1968), then Day of the Dead (1985) ends the trilogy. Romero himself said that Day was his favorite of his original films.

For the people that fear that "Shaun of the Dead" is disrespectful to "Dawn of the Dead" a good friend of mine was tasked years ago to screen "Shaun" for George Romero, himself (to get permission for some of the music "Shaun" wanted to use from the original "Dawn") Romero LOVED the film and can be seen wearing a "Shaun of the Dead" promo button, while shooting "Land of the Dead" where he cast Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright in the film, as zombies. So glad you watched this one. It's one of the greatest horror films, ever, and brilliantly satirizes consumerist America in the 70's.

Should watch Romero's Day of The Dead. 80's film. Also Romero's zombies don't feel pain or eat brains because they are in pain, that is just the Return series. Day of The Dead explains more but there are some things about some zombies. But either way, Romeo's Z's eat any part of a fresh human. Not one scene of a Romero Z eating a brain. The way some zombies walk is a combination of rigamortis and decaying function.

Anyone who says Shaun of the Dead is "making fun" of this, or any other zombie movie just doesn't get it. Shaun of the Dead was a LOVE LETTER to zombie movies!! Also.. Romero zombies don't specifically go after brains, tho they will eat those too. They'll eat any warm blooded creature they can catch, and will consume as much of it as they can. As far as their retaining memories.. the way I like to think about it is they're like 10 levels past blackout drunk. When you're blackout drunk, you still remember things... but you're not *you* .. a zombie is like that, but is no longer human

So, different franchises have different zombie cuisine rules. These are the Romero movies. They'll eat every part of the body. A lot of the Italian ones are inspired by Romero, and use similar rules. Return of the Living Dead is the one where they first go for brains. I'm not sure if there are any before it, but the horror/comedy Warm Bodies introduces a reason for the brains thing, in that eating brains reactivates something in the zombie's own brain, letting it briefly have a tiny bit of memory and coherent though. The makeup was still fairly primitive back then. Tom Savini was the main makeup guy for this one and the next one (Day of the Dead), and by the next one they'd really got the effects down. There are some really realistic-looking gore effects in that one. Assisting him and playing a small part in the movie was the new guy, Greg Nicotero, who has gone on to be the preeminent zombie makeup guy. If you haven't seen it, Warm Bodies is good for some chuckles, but the zombie comedy that I really enjoyed is Fido. I highly recommend it.

The Romero DEAD series and the RETURN series are separate universes. The brain-eating zombies who feel pain are in the RETURN 'verse; and those zombies can talk. The DEAD zombies are reanimated corpses with vestigial memories intact and that's it. SHAUN OF THE DEAD refers more to the DEAD series than RETURN.

I believe he also did for the 3rd movie Day of the Dead). He plays the biker who combed his moustache in this movie. He was asked to do the effects for Night of the Living Dead (the original 60's movie, not the 90's remake in which he also directed), but he was in Vietnam at the time (as a photographer If I remember it correctly) You mentioning spam makes me think of Monty Python 🤣😜😉

Saun of the dead was a love letter to George Romero's dead movies. Simon Pegg, and Edgar Wright are zombie extras in Land of the dead. George Romero was a big fan. I rented this on video after seeing the night of the living dead remake on cable when I was 12. It was hard to watch at first because I grew up watching 80's horror that was very cheesy. Nothing I saw before was filmed in a serious documentary style. It turned me into a bigger horror fan over time. When I was 23 I toured the Monroeville mall during the DOTD 25th anniversary. Our group was filmed, and made it on the anchor Bay ultimate edition that was released not long after. So yeah, it's a very unconventional favorite movie.

You might have been told this already, but you shouldn't take information from "Return of the Living Dead" as 'canonical zombie lore'. It's more or less a comedic spoof of the "Living Dead" films by Romero. Most people generally accept some version of Romero's zombie lore to be the "correct" zombie lore. Especially insofar as that zombies don't actually eat brains. They eat flesh. And there doesn't really seem to be a reason for it, other than their allegorical reflection of humanities seemingly unending "need" to consume things. Believe it or not, Romero's original three zombie movies are social commentaries on things like handling a mass panic (Night), consumerism (Dawn), and authority/control (Day). And how each of those things are things that can drive us to consume ourselves, figuratively in the real world. Literally in the zombie apocalypse. (You touch on this concept in this review a little bit, but that theme is in all the movies.)

The alternate ending doesn't exist. It never got fully shot. The head cast for Fran got used for the apartment scene and was blown up. The alternate ending consisted of Fran and Peter killing themselves and the credits roll and at the end of the credits the helicopter winds down as it runs out of fuel meaning they wouldn't have had enough fuel to get away.

4:30 that's George Romero, and the lady next to him was his wife. 5:30 the living dead (Dan O'Bannon) and of the dead (Romero) are in a separate universe, that's why in the living dead series they eat brains and in of the dead series they eat flesh. 7:23 that was supposed to be Gaylen Ross head, they made an alternate ending where Peter shoots himself and Fran steps out of the helicopter and then shoves her head into the blades then the camera zooms in or out revealing the blades slowing down meaning they didn't have enough fuel to escape. 9:31 in the extended cut, that guy and others kill the dispatcher at the dock. 10:32 that's the actual Pennsylvania national guard. 13:32 there is a hand in that scene that I guess got past post production. The Monroeville mall is still open and Romero knew the manager of said mall and had permission to film but only at night and they filmed during Christmas time so they had to take off all of the Christmas deco every time they had to film. 17:23 pan fried spam is good. 34:08 that line Romero thought of it while he was drunk lol. 39:15 Tom savini a.ka. sex machine the godfather of gore, (there are two other guys but they sadly passed away) the sultan of splatter. I love this movie as you can see lol. And if it wasn't for Dario argentos (I would recommend suspiria, demons one and two) involvement we wouldn't have this masterpiece.

Aside from the play on the name and the basic zombie characteristics, this film has little in common with Shaun of the Dead, so I don't know why anyone would think Shaun is disrespectful to this film. Remember that the Return of the Living Dead movies are NOT connected to Romero's zombie movies. They were made by one of the producers of Night of the Living Dead but that's where the connections end. In the Living Dead films, the zombies want brains specifically, and can talk. In Romero's films, the zombies want ANY kind of living flesh and they can't talk. The two series have very different continuities and zombie rules.

Having only 4 main characters allowed them to develop as people. Steven is interesting because he isn't SWAT trained like Roger & Peter and you can tell he wants to be like them and projects his frustration at not being a manly man onto Fran, who he wants to protect and who he sees as denting his masculinity in front of the others.
@skeletalk
@skeletalk 11 месяцев назад
I see men do this a lot and its very odd to me, men who don't feel manly taking that frustration out on those they love. But don't understand that its probably not those traits Fran loves about him anyway, its quite sad

Return of the living dead and Romeros Night, Dawn and day are separate universes btw. Returns zombies have demonic/witchcraft influence and eat brains, whereas Romero's zombies eat anything thats warm meat and have an "unexplained" mystery origin too them.

The one main gang guy with the long mustache and black leather jacket and machete is Tom Savini who was the makeup artist/special effects guy for the movie. He's a legend! Also the biker gang was an actual biker gang paid to be in the movie. Edit: I posted this before the end when you acknowledge Tom Savini

(extention to last post) This is what i think went on with what looked like a police raid, there was a guy named Martinez, who i guess started a group that were in denial about the zombie issue getting bad and were literally going against orders to vacate. because it looked like there were residents being forced out of their homes by force. Also people were harboring the zombies thinking they could be cured so for their safety they either locked them in rooms or in what looked like a closed room in the basement. Although the raid to get these people out and exterminate the zombies didn't go to well, it was obviously worse when you have a trigger happy cop who obviously took this as an opportunity to kill people (there's a word i want to say but not sure if it be okay to say here) all i'll say is he was a man who was full of hate. he let his hate take control and became trigger happy the other cop guy tried to stop him but he pushed him away and in the end karma came back and he got shot dead. another reason why i believe these people were harboring the zombies was because of the handsome zombie in white shirt that got out of the apartment I'm assuming was the husband of the lady who ran out to embrace him. When he looked at her it was obvious she was thinking he must recognize her only for it to actually be him looking for a place to munch on first.
@skeletalk

Glad I found your channel. I went to see this in the theater when it came out. I absolutely love this movie as well as Day of the Dead, I agree that the music is awesome and fits perfectly with this movie. Shaun of the Dead to me is on the same level as Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living dead, and Day of the Dead. The only difference is the comedic parts, but it is just as entertaining, shocking and well written as the aforementioned.

Great reaction, the enthusiasm for this old favorite of mine (saw it 1st run, U.S. debut. I was 11 years old) is infectious. Just to sort out a matter of competing lores: it's true Romero's zombies retain subliminal levels of impulse and memory from their former lives, a concept which he developed most fully with his handling of the "Bub" zombie character in Day Of The Dead (85). On the other hand, the "zombies feel pain= why the brain eating" lore originated with Dan O'Bannon's Return Of The Living Dead (85). The brain eating angle had no place in the Romero lore. There are other stipulations that mark Romero's lore as unique within the genre. For instance, the familiar trope of rotted, semi skeletal bodies forcing themselves out of their graves (as in Return) likewise has no place in the Romero lore. It was stipulated in Night Of The Living Dead that only recently deceased, unburied bodies zombify. No brain eating or skeletons bursting out of their graves in the Romeroverse. Btw I really like the acknowledgement of Goblin's throbbing, driving score, imo one of the most memorable and distinguishing elements of Dawn. Good job, one of the best reactions I've seen of this film. Cheers.

Return of the Living Dead and Romero zombies are two different series. It was originally going to be part of his series but due to differences between Romero and the director, return of the living dead was a separate series. The reason rotld zombie eat brains is the neurons.

42:36...🤔hmmmm my weapon(s) of choice for the Zombie Apocalypse Primary Weapon: Spear (also makes a good walking stick). Side Arm: 22Lr. Revolver (like the one Steven used in the boiler room). Ultimate Weapon: 12Ga. Sawed Off Pump Action Shotgun (for BiG PROBLEMS that a spear and 22lr piece shooter can't solve)... PollAxe and Katanas are good weapons though. I pick the Spear as my primary melee weapon because it has reach and as i said it's good for a walking stick (i like hiking).

There are 4 versions of Dawn Of The Dead (1978)....The Theatrical Cut (which is George Romero's preferred cut), The Cannes Cut/Extended Cut/Producers Cut (which at one time was wrongly called the director's cut when the Theatrical Cut is George Romero's perfered director's cut), the Dario Argento/European Cut (were producer Dario Argento recut the film in way for the European market) and the fan edited - Extended Mall Hours Cut (where every scene/bit of footage from all the other versions are all mostly seamlessly edited together)...All versions are available for free on RU-vid (if you know where to look 😉).

Zack Snyder's remake is well worth checking out too. This is, of course, still the King, but the remake comes impressively close to equalling its dizzy heights. Certainly it's the very best of the "new wave" of zombie movies that came about during the resurgence in the 2000s.

When those intestines come out, they’re pristine. 😆😆😆😆

Return Of… lore and …Of The Dead lore are different, (off shoots, slightly more directly than Fulci’s Zombie and other pseudo-sequels are indirect off shoots in terms of lore. A lot of filmmakers, (particularly European ones, most notably Italian ones,) made zombie films and marketed them as sequels to the ‘68 Night. So, if you haven’t seen Fulci’s Zombie (1979,) I definitely recommend taking a step over there and see what he was up to. I’m always wondering if people reacting will notice Tom “Sex Machine” Savini. I def recommend watching Return of The Living Dead parts 2 & 3. Though Part 3 is not really in-line with Part 1, way more a Brian Yuzna film than a Return Of Th Living Dead film, I still love the film on its own terms. Night Of The Living Dead, the more you see the ‘68 film the more of a journey you can go on with her character, the biggest change between it and the ‘90 remake was Barbara’s character. I like both Barbaras, I’ll just say that. Day Of The Dead had a lot of footage shot in my hometown in SWFL. A lot of the zombies in that film were people from the area who pretty much got lunch and a hat. Goblin did the soundtrack, which was an awesome choice.
